This movie has taught me and probably a lot of people about the true side of the western countries.
People in Russia or other eastern European countries are brainwashed by the western media that western Europe and america are very rich and safe countries. The reality is, you can easily fall into the wrong hands, and you wont be able to do anything about it.
I know a guy in the same situation as she, but it's real. My mother has been trying to help him for 9 years (!!!) without any luck. I don't know what to do or is there any hope. :-(

I'm English, and I downloaded this film from a website today only to find it was dubbed with Spanish subtitles! I speak a little French and know some Latin, which obviously didn't help that much, BUT even with that handicap, I understood pretty much every scene, because it was so well acted and scripted, and the themes so poignant..the world can be such a brutal place for the young, vulnerable poor such as this beautifully realised character Lilja and her young friend. Superlative film-making.

this is one of those movies that I don't want to re-watch, because it is depressing. We all live our lives, but there are times when we get in really shitty situations and this movie is a reminder that your life can get really shitty. I guess it gives you some enthusiasm even if you aren't 100% satisfied with your current situation.
I don't really get the part when the "angel" friend tells her, "if you commit suicede, you loose," because I did not see an exit in her situation. I don't understand why she would win by staying alive, if she was used like that.

After the collapse of the Soviet union Russia found itself in a bad economical crises and people were scrambling to make ends meet. This crash with the ruthless capitalistic system makes Lilja stand out as the victim of a transition to a world where money is everything.
The story is - sadly - true, for women and children all over the world, every single fucking day!.
I've considered starting some sort of foundation to help people in this very situation. I just dont know where to start... Should I just buy a lot of guns, and go kill the fuckings bastards responsible for these things?
This movie is really incredible - very hard to watch, but incredible, and it raises some VERY good points. I can't even count the number of times I wanted to jump in and rescue Lilija... truly amazing movie. Five stars.

ok for most developed countries the story is the same.. for human trafficking and prostitution most gangsters will spend about 5 years or so in jail.. probably out in 2 with good behavior..

I live in Sweden but speak Russian and Swedish fluent (and pretty good English as you may be able to see). On top of that, I previously lived in Tallinn (Estonia), where some of the scenes in the movie are recorded, I recognize them (like the big highway with a bridge over it, Andrej and Lilja pass the place with a car. Been there myself actually, many times, it's not far from where I lived).
Well, anyway... the acting in the movie is very good, the story as well.
This trailer is good because you just want to see more. The Rocky trailers are probably the worst in the world because they say pretty much the whole story in the trailer lol.

What swedish men aren't that nasty? The real nasty man was the pimp who kept her locked in an apartment and he wasn't swedish, neither was the guy who fooled her into going to Sweden.
And for your info I've seen plenty of swedish men buying prostitutes in other countries in Europe and I wouldn't want to think they are all treating them well. What's the matter? There are such men everywhere! Even in Sweden believe it or not.

It's not just prostitution rings - these crooks are everywhere. The world is becoming so repulsiive and mony-oriented. When I think of everything that is massproduced; the art scene is suffering so much I could cry - all that seemes to matter is the financial benefit - everything else is forgotten and people are treated like garbage.

No need to get pissy...all I said said was that of the world, how it has become more money-oriented, I never mentioned the old ways of life. Take the hookers of paris in the mid 30's for instance; it was not the same thing back then, if anything it was just another way to make a living....NOT that I approve of that line of work in any fashion - but when something gets turned into big business and money is envolved in such dispicable ammounts, it most assuredly becomes a scrupouless trade.

I'll tell you what makes no sense is you blurting out a statement like "the world has not become more money oriented". To hear you say that just blows my mind, since that is one of the very themes whitch this film explores. After the collapse of the Soviet union Russia found itself in a bad economical crises and people were scrambling to make ends meet. This crash with the ruthless capitalistic system makes Lilja stand out as the victim of a transition to a world where money is everything.

This movie is really incredible - very hard to watch, but incredible, and it raises some VERY good points. I can't even count the number of times I wanted to jump in and rescue Lilija... truly amazing movie. Five stars.

Very good movie indeed. It´s really giving the feeling as if one was experiencing this himself.
I´m just curious how does it look like in Estonia.. I mean in reality. It´s just that some people think that that bad situation is absolutelly normal in such countries (and they include my country as well) but that´s not true. Maybe some ghettos are like that I don´t really know... but I really want to know. It shouldn´t be like that in the first place...

ok for most developed countries the story is the same.. for human trafficking and prostitution most gangsters will spend about 5 years or so in jail.. probably out in 2 with good behavior..
but if they get caught with a kilo of heroin or cocaine they are going to jail for much much much longer.. that is why gangsters are moving towards kidnapping and the sex slave trade rather than sell drugs.. the laws that man has created make absolutely no sense....

so so very very depressing.. but in terms of art?? it is grand.. very grand indeed.. the girl in the film is beautiful.. i would have given her a real job as a cashier.. buy her nice clothes and watch her grow up and be happy.. based off of a real life girl who did kill herself in sweden.. so sad.. sadly people, it doesn't look like there is a hell.. but some of these old greasy fat men need to burn forever....

This movie is a masterpiece.
I live in Sweden but speak Russian and Swedish fluent (and pretty good English as you may be able to see). On top of that, I previously lived in Tallinn (Estonia), where some of the scenes in the movie are recorded, I recognize them (like the big highway with a bridge over it, Andrej and Lilja pass the place with a car. Been there myself actually, many times, it's not far from where I lived).
Well, anyway... the acting in the movie is very good, the story as well.
