Not only do I fell terrible for his victims, but I feel bad for those who lived in his building. It was low-income and after Dahmer was convicted the city had the building torn down, evicting all of it's occupants.
I think as we move toward living in more "protected" societies, people become less attentive and less able to defend themselves. In many of these serial killer cases (and violent assaults in general) the survivors almost always say how they realized something wasn't right but went along anyway. The media would like us to believe that the police are always there and we have no need to worry, but in reality no one is going to care for your personal safety as much as yourself.
I find it odd that the people he brought back to his apartment didn't smell the rotting body parts and realize something was wrong. Even his neighbors said they could smell putrid odors coming from his apartment. I doubt Jeffrey could smell it, since he was probably used to the odor (like a smoker can't smell the smoke in their shirt, but everyone else can). But usually when you step into someone's house or apartment, you can tell if the air is fresh or if the trash needs to be taken out.

Absolutely spot on with your quick assessment of Dahmer. Dahmer was different to other serial killers like Bundy, BTK and Ramirez who enjoy killing and taunting the police. Dahmer killed because he was compelled to and because he feared being alone. I don't think he could feel love in the normal way and it does seem to stem back to his child hood...killing animals to keep them with him. He didn't get a thrill out of murdering his victims.

yeah it is interesting but it's pretty clear that he suffered some sort of psychosis. while i'm not claiming to be an expert on psychosis i have come in contact with several people who have had it and often they seem perfectly lucid and act out their delusions with competency. i assume (or rather i guess) that this was simply a delusion

I think as we move toward living in more "protected" societies, people become less attentive and less able to defend themselves. In many of these serial killer cases (and violent assaults in general) the survivors almost always say how they realized something wasn't right but went along anyway. The media would like us to believe that the police are always there and we have no need to worry, but in reality no one is going to care for your personal safety as much as yourself.

I find it odd that the people he brought back to his apartment didn't smell the rotting body parts and realize something was wrong. Even his neighbors said they could smell putrid odors coming from his apartment. I doubt Jeffrey could smell it, since he was probably used to the odor (like a smoker can't smell the smoke in their shirt, but everyone else can). But usually when you step into someone's house or apartment, you can tell if the air is fresh or if the trash needs to be taken out.
