Amazing! My bumpers are painted but ill definitely try this on my somewhat faded door handles on my Jeep ZJ. thanks, very innovative and a good DIY method. so much easier and better than repainting.
Ogre, it did but honestly I'd recommend painting the plastic instead. It was hard for me to get an even look due to light spots. At the same time I painted my grill with Dupicolor bumper paint. The parts I heated are starting to fade again and the grill still looks new. Krylon Fusion also works great on plastic. I'll be painting my plastics soon.
Thanks for the video. I've heard of a lot of people doing this with good results but actually seeing you do it is what will finally get me to try it on my Xterra.
@Xterraforce Did this work on your xterra? my xterra is really faded and i was wondering if it'd be better to go ahead and get the dye instead of a heat gun
@lilperzn The plastic feels the same. If you get it too hot in parts it will look a little smoother than before because you've melted the little bumps down. But start at a far distance and move closer til you find a good distance for the heat gun and then keep it at that distance.
@lilperzn This is a waste of time. There is a bumper restorer I bought ($12) it takes about 20 min or so to dry and the shit looks new again....you dont have to mask anything off either. Its real simple. I forget what itts called, I threw bottle away.
Its been 5 months and i blast the bumper at car wash and it still looks new. No bullshit, it made my car look 100% better.
I can't believe this really works! I'll tell you those ZJ's look like hell when their bumpers and cladding fade. What an easy fix to make them look great again! I am gonna have to try this on my XJ!
Do you know how this works? Does this just settle down the surface wear of the plastic which would cause the pale, chalky look, much like my girlfriends skin?
can this work on the rubber trim on the outside? i got some paint on it from painting my car and i cant get it off with goo gone or anything? i was thinking about painting them over but i can't find anything for it.
@jschristian44 I'm not sure if it will work for that. You could always try. But if you got paint on it, a heat gun won't help. Except maybe it would help by melting the paint to scrape it off. For this plastic, the heat brings the pigments back to the surface and it looks better. If there is paint on the surface, the pigments may come back and look better but if the paint is covering it, it won't do any good. Hope that makes sense and helps!
Thanks man, I have tried black shoe polish paste, trans fluid, oil, armor all, and even the polish for this application and nothing has worked but I will try this.
Hey thanks for that video. I went out right away and bought a gun. WOW! the color is back. All these years all I did I can see now is coat the oxidation with Armoral no wonder whe it faded the panel still lookes the same. Thanls again
On the heat gun I have, there is just a 1 and 2 setting. I put it on 2. It's a 1200watt gun if that tells you anything. Im not very familiar with heat guns and this one is pretty old. Just try a few settings out and see what works best. And just adjust your distance and how quick you move it to get the best results. On the warping, none. I am amazed at how smooth it makes it look just from it all being one even color.
Yea, I did the side panels but didn't get any video of that. This thread has all of my pictures, before and after, on the first page for reference. Do you have a Grand Cherokee too?

Peanut butter works too, and lasts longer (since peanut oil is waterproof), just don't use it on interior plastics!

Best tip EVER! Just tried it on my 1991 van. Man, what a difference! Awesome... thank you :)

Tried this and it eventually fades back the best thing to do especially if you have a black bumper is to just repaint it

smallbee1234 1 year ago
@smallbee1234 I think it actually slightly melts the surface or heats it up and the color pigments come back to the surface.

What brilliant and unexpected results.
Now this is a useful video to show - I will have to try that out myself.

huffy15 1 year ago 8
@huffy15 I doubt it. The girlfriends usually complain that the heat hurts and run before any good is done.

@daufuskieraised For girlfriends, try a tanning bed.
