  • Uh... yes, the blue grading was way overdone, but IMHO you've overdone it in the other direction... The blue cast really helped emphasize the quickly coming nightfall and thus stressed the urgency of the situation. It would have been great to keep some of the color grading in outdoor shots (evening lighting, especially winter time, is indeed blue tinted). Very good call removing it from indoor shots however, it really had no place there, with artificial lighting and all.

  • @Jonboy2312 this is an old video that was done before the final colour grading. Plus youtube seems to mess the colouring up for some reason. Check out the Revisited facebook page and you can see videos and screengrabs with the correct colouring. I assure you it looks nothing like this.

  • I dunno, maybe you could replace the blue with something more nightish?

  • Why did you correct out the blue??? It helped set the tone of the film.

  • (some intestine blood, not because of the lightsaber, would be more realistic)

  • i like the original blue version as it seems night is falling... anyway, one more 'congratulations' to your great pile of good comments. your job surprised me, and i consider myself a huge purist of the saga. i was wondering when re u exactly giving us empire's revisited masterpiece... regards from spain.

  • Looks great! any chance of redoing the effects with the Blurays when they hit in September?

  • sweet jebus...it's beautiful ;_;

  • The blue version looks much better. The bottom version looks incomplete

  • @Synth3t1cs I can't agree with you. It wasn't THAT blue in the original. The whole 2004 DVD has screwed colours. I think Ady has done a great job for colour correction itself.

  • The blue color is for a more cold aspect. But it's very exaggerated in the dvd.

Thank's for doing this Adywan, and all your enhancements.

Please just not use musics from the prelogy, I think it was a bad idee for A New Hope ;-)

  • Man, what a difference! GL spends millions of dollars to add pointless, often distracting garbage, but ILM doesn't bother to fix the most basic mistakes, like flipped frames, lightsaber color, matt lines and color.

    Wish they'd hire you, man!

  • i jsut found out about these edits. has esb:r been released yet?

  • just remember something else that in the close up of Chewbacca at 1:58, the doors start closing (without the sound effect) before they do in the wide shot. Just noticed that a months ago.

But it looks like you already fixed that here.

  • @Knightmessenger yep, i've fixed that :)

  • Suggestion, Ady: Upload the new Revisited clip WITHOUT the DVD comparison, so that the blues that do remain in Revisited aren't washed out. You could link to this comparison in the solo vid's info or something.

  • I already have uploaded it. Check out my videos. It's called "Luke's rescue 720p"

Youtube's compression has still messed about with the colouring a bit and the brightness but its not as severe as this video

  • Ah, didn't realize that. Thanks, Ady! :)

  • sorry, but the revisited looks more like a film set and not as cool (in the sense of "cold")

the humans and robots look better in the revisited though

  • have you even seen how this film originally looked before they screwed up the colours in 1997 then worse in 2004? Everything wasn't blue

Plus please read the info about the video and you can see that i have stated that the colours got screwed when put against the overly blue original video so most of the blue that's in the Revisited version has been wiped out

  • i dont think I saw the original... i saw it for the first time when my brother got the original trilogy remastered on VHS.

yes i read that info, but even without the DVD comparison it occured to me like I described above.

To clarify: You're doing magnificant work that I couldn't do. It's just that I think that the only worthwhile critique is the brutally honest one, and I always try to fulfil this maxim. This is in no way personal :)

Also I just saw this one snippet out of context...

  • Sorry if i came off a bit harsh, it wasn't my intention.

You'd be surprised just how many people have contacted me since i posted this clip saying things like "it's supposed to be blue because its cold" or "It looks better in the original clip and you've taken all the blue out of it which looks terrible" from people who hadn't bothered to read the video info or seemed to have had the misfortune of never seeing what the movie originally looked like before they screwed up the colours on the DVD

  • I see, no harm done ;)

  • adywanuk, I'm sure you're tired of reading this question but may we know if you have a thought date to release the Return of the Jedi?

And about that film, I think most of us agree that the Lapti Nek scene should return.

  • "Lapti nek" won't be returning but it won't be "Jedi rocks" either. I don't think either dance number worked, but Lapti nek was less objectionable than the '97 monster. It's going to be more of a background number, in the vain of the cantina sequence

  • @adywanuk The thing I don't like about Jedi Rocks is that some of the new characters are cool but they don't appear in the rest of the Jabba's Palace scenes. It would have been nice if some more creatures could have consistently been added to the other parts and then extended Lapti Nek.

There is the exact same clip from the original version 1993 THX master also on youtube. I have to say the picture here looks much brighter with higher contrast, I still think it almost looks too good.

  • @Knightmessenger Youtube messed up the colouring on this clip. I posted this clip minus the original 2004 comparison on the ESB:R facebook page and, even though it still has messed with the brightness a bit, you can see that the true video is indeed darker. And both Jedi Rocks & Lapti Nek will be gone from ROTJ:R and the band will only be background characters.

  • I can see the Han saving Luke at the end at least a bit darker (minus the blue of course), being that it is dusk, going on to nightfall. Otherwise, LOVE the changes (especially the far off Falcon in the back of the hanger... amazing!)

  • Just watched the Original Theatrical Version copy of this exact scene and watched it side by side next to this youtube video and I have to say, the Revisted Version's coloring is almost the same but clearer and brighter. Awesome job Adywan :-)

If you don't beleive me I will ripp this exact scene and put it on youtube aswell :-)

  • No more See-Greenpio. Loving the re-flipped shots I cant figure out why they were originally flipped either.

  • Great Work!

  • Maybe too bright? It just doesnt feel cold and dark and its suposed to be at night. Just look at the exterior when they close the gates, its dark and blue. Im not saying i dont love Hoth white, i think its great, b ut maybe at night its should be slightly darker and blueish (Not, no please no, Not as blue as de DVD)

  • It's all the little things that add up to your huge improvements. You ARE the Fanedit Jedi Master! ESB Revisited will be worth the wait!

  • SWEET!!!! Can't wait for this one. You are the best

  • I watched it a few times, and I think I see why you flipped the shot where Han slices open the taun taun. When the taun taun dies, he falls over on his left side, and when you look at a close up of the taun tauns belly, his rear leg is on the right, which would be by his head, but since he has small forelegs, that doesn't make sense. Also flipping han makes the direction he's slicing in (right to left, or chest to belly), make more sense. You have a keen eye to catch that, adywan! Good job!

  • looks great, but why did you flip the shot when han sliced open the taun taun with luke's lightsaber? I do like that you fixed the hanger doors so they don't start to come open, then start to come open again! You gotta wonder what lucas was thinking when he DIDN'T fix minor errors like that! Glad you saw fit to finally fix them! Excellent work, my friend! Can't wait to see it when it's finished! As Ben said, "The Force will be with you... always"!

  • I flipped the 2 shots, not only because the Taun Taun was originally facing the wrong way but also because, if you look at the shot i flipped of Han when he ignites the sabre, it was originally flipped and the emblem on his jacket was on the wrong side. I was never sure why they flipped those 2 shots in the first place as it didn't make sense.

  • Great. I cant wait to see this when its done :)

  • Looking good, Ady. I like how you fixed the shield doors closing in the hanger base, recomposited Obi-Wan with enhanced force glow and re-rotoscoped the lightsaber blade.

Have a Merry Christmas from my family to yours, and a Happy New Year.

  • well done, I'm very impressed, this scene from Empire never looked better! :)
