i used to do mma, the reason it didnt break, it wasnt in properly, if werdum had managed to get the back of vinnys palm flat on his chest he would have snapped it, look thats whathe was tryong to do
at the angle werdum was holding magelhaes, it was no longer an armbar, but more of a shoulder lock. i'm still surprised that werdum did not try to do any transition to other moves, but just kept trying to do the armbar for more than a minute... :S
'double-jointed' refers to people with really lose joints. there isnt a such thing as a 'double-joint,' but some people definitely have weird, lose joints. i can pop my thumb out of socket (a useless gift), and a training partner of mine can extend his wrist in either direction til it touches his arm (less useless)
Holy shit fuck.. ha i love when you watch armbars at these levels and the arm goes past point of tapping... Then no tap, like there arms are so fucked up they can tske it for do long
I don't know what adjustments Fabricio could have made to finish the armbar from this position, but Magalhaes was able to survive it by keeping his left shoulder free, giving him all that wiggle room. The irony is that most of us are taught to escape armbars by turning into the person and trying to wiggle the elbow out, but if Magalhaes would have done that, Fabricio probably could have secured his upper arm and finished the armbar.
Is there any black belt who can explain this because I don't get it, i'm just a blue belt. I mean, one of the first lessons when you learn the armbar is to press your knees towards eachother as much as you can. We don't see Werdum do this. Is there a reason ?
Sir do you think only a black belt can teach you how too he did it? I have grappled with many black belts and none have tapped me out without me gassing first. And the funny thing is im not even a grappler. just annoyed I have no one to train with in grappling due to no money. yes I am a student at college and broke cliched I know. But I rolled with many people and they said I have some skill but the truth is I just watch ADCC and UFC. if u in uk maybe we can train that would be cool
Dude I have rolled with roger gracie and have been tapped by him many times, but never in 1 min. I have trained in catch wrestling for 10 yrs. And he maybe 6'4 or something and im 5'9 and 1/2 but im telling you I have been around. In labroke grove london at the roger gracie academy we are humble. I have seen black belts rolling with natural good grapplers who never rolled before and their put up a hell of a struggle and 1 min was long gone. get real
@ryukenb2k if you haven't trained much, not saying your not skilled for your level, but a true black belt will tap you if he wants to. chances are they just don't want to tap you in the 1st minute because its a learning experience. and its not much fun tapping someone over and over. a true black belt gets nothing out of tapping an amateur grappler in seconds, he has nothing to prove by doing so.
I know what you are saying about black belts not taping out amateurs for the learning curve thing, but I assure you here at the academy we goe very hard. That example just doesnt happen here because everyone gets tapped out even roger. We have this saying at the academy no tap no gain. because when someone doesnt tap they wasnt rolling enough. A true black belt is humble and gets plenty out of rolling regardless if he taps everyone. I love getting tapped out it's funny.
@nagibmelo Inacreditável! Caramba! Então eu banquei o idiota, mas não precisava responder na mesma altura pois Deus disse, perdoai aqueles pois não sabem o que fazem. Eu não sabia q esse papo de inquebrável era real! Mutante! :P
That was incredibly clever by Vinny Magalhaes, he pushed Werdum's right foot low, crossing it over his left foot. This opened up the knees and allowed his shoulder to abduct (move away from his centreline), which in turn lessened the angle on his elbow across Werdum's him.
Note how he keeps Werdum's foot pushed toward his own chest the whole time, and didn't allow Werdum to hook his head.
That, gentlemen, is first class last-ditch defensive technique.
Tell that to Ronda Rousey when her knees were WIDE open and still broke Tate's arm. RT @MrRaysilk his knees were wide open i think thats why his arm dindt fall off!!!!
@MrRaysilk he didn't tap because he was on his side so the majority of the pressure was on his shoulder. Even so, Werdum was cranking on his elbow, but had to extend his hips about 3x as far to get him a tap while magalhaes is on his side because his shoulder was elevated. Vinny's escape was aboslutely classic.
@cfrancis Multiple reasons dude, First being Vinny is incredibly flexible and understands how the joint should sit for it can be broken. But if you look closely at the way he is laying, it is as though he is doing a standing chest stretch. This allows all his muscles to expand out.
I could be wrong here i mean I dont want to correct a black belts technique but to finish that arm bar didnt he need to squeeze his knees together tighter? and also body leg over head leg provides a tighter lock, again I dont want to correct a black belt world champions technique thats just the way i've always been taught, regardless sweet escape vinny!
All that could've been avoided if he remembered he could actually get more pressure by putting Vinny's arm under his armpit. Correct me someone if im wrong, really curious bout this one.
I think Vinny Magalhaes is made of rubber. It would have been interesting to see what would have happened if that was Rousimar Palhares torquing on Vinny's arm. Palhares has a vicious habit of breaking people's limbs, LITERALLY. Either way, props to Vinny, i admire his BJJ game. I wish i could train with him.
@4z4r3th Since the armbar only is an attack on the elbow joint, and actually not breaking bones but shattering ligaments, i dont think so. But all the strain put on the tendons may have resulted in some pain afterwards
@desembodic Vinny earlier in the match swept Werdum and won the match on points. Its kind of the same scenario as, "Don't leave it to the judges". Awesome display of grappling regardless, no?
@desembodic Because you don't get any points for a submission which is not finished. If the match were even on points at the end, he may get the win for advantage based on the submission attempt. Watch the Roger Gracie v Jacare match, Roger broke Jacare's arm, but lost on points because Jacare didn't tap.
@CaliMMAFan haha wow that is so ridiculous the point system needs some reworking he had superior position with that sub for a long time and just didn't want to hurt a fellow friend. He could have easily broke his arm a few times but didn't really go for it.
@desembodic well, lets say that submission attempt
was worth 3 points: I'd have won by 8 points (2 from a sweep, 6 from 2 omoplatas fully locked, which one of them resulted on me getting the sweep). he had an arm bar attempt (3 points), plus lost a point for pulling guard... the final result would have been 8 - 3 (-1) in my favor.
Plus he wasn't trying to be nice, he popped Jeff Monson's arm 2 matches before our match...
@VinnyMagalhaes No one here should even doubt you. If they look at your record even back when you were young it does not lie. It takes a tough dude not to tap tap from this. I mean come on, a world champ had the arm bar on you. Good for you for not tapping. Yes you did win that match. I was watching live from Japan. Cant wait to get back to the states to start training full time and competing. Keep doing what you do bro, you will be in high light reels for years to come.
@VinnyMagalhaes werdum won the adcc championship in 2007 and again in 2009 and as of this year final 3times and has a 3ed place to as you.so werdum is1 of the best in the world. and you beat him. so what is it like being in top of the world now your the best at no gi. work payed off. good like in 2013
@mattgoeswestking Werdum is still the best HW grappler in the World. 2 gold medals, 2 silver medals and 2 bronze medals. It's going to be hard to beat that. Unless if I win in 2013 again, then I should deserve the title for winning more in the latest events. Until then, Werdum is still a little ahead of me.
@VinnyMagalhaes wow you just won maybe the biggest grappler's title in the world and your say that. your a really good guy. im a giant werdum fan. but i think ill be cheering for you in 2013 and im happy i was in Nottingham and got to see you win the title. i do jiujitsu muay thai and mma and its guys like you that make me want to get to the top level. if i ever get to face you it would be a honour. but being a striker and you being so skilled i dont plan on winning lol.
notice magalhaes (2:29) pushing werdum's right foot down away from his face, keeping werdum's legs crossed. this reduces the pressure werdum can apply to magalhaes' arm by allowing his shoulder to move a bit more since werdum can't immobilize the shoulder by squeezing his legs together when his legs are crossed like this. magalhaes has obviously got a flexible shoulder, and this may have been the little extra room he needed to allow his arm not to break.
This is how you ref! No resetting them because they're kinda near the edge of the mat. There's a submission attempt going on so you let them go out of bounds if they have to until there's a break or a neutral position. Refs should never be resetting guys in the middle with submissions locked in.
Exactly right my friend, look at what happened to David Avellan. That could have been a career ending injury just coz the ref restarted them in a heel hook position WTF!!! that was never gona end well was it.
Although he appeared to control his thumb so it pointed away from his hips, Werdum could not change the angle of his shoulder joint and elbow. Pinching his knees would have helped, but even that may have not worked. He needed to work his hips in a 30 degree angle downward from head to hip to achieve the right leverage which would be near impossible to maintain the submission.
lol and werdum beat fedor? lol just goes to show anything can happen, no disrespect intended btw

Rediculous flexibility, Werdum was left shaking his head
