Our hospital is very natural birth friendly, you are "allowed" to labor and deliver in any position your want, including the shower. The rooms are set up to labor and deliver in and the dad even has a real bed to sleep in. Baby also rooms in with the mom unless they need special attention in the NICU.

At least the dad was involved I know dads who stay in the waiting room till the baby and everything is all done then they come I and see the baby... I also know people who have births and the dad and mom are naked.. Is it true that if the dad kisses or licks the nipples it makes the placenta come out faster?? Was this in the UK? The reason I ask is that they let you out of the bed and get into the position you're in. In the US natural birth in a hospital just means no meds, but still confined to the bed, tied down with monitors.

that what I did with all my kids and I will say THANK GOD I DID. Because once they where born I was able to be with my child right away. and I was able to breast feed right on that time. Because I wasnt drug up 15 mins I was able to walk right away and take a shower.

This mother did so well in an atmosphere that did not impart calm, safety or ease or encourage her to access her own innate wisdom. The language & tone of voice used by the midwife together with the baby being pulled out of her is why I have disliked this video. Why is the medical profession so in a rush?! This epitomises to me a midwife "delivering" rather than "catching" or "receiving" a baby that the mother has "birthed".

@DrVaghook She's pushing hard, that's what the anus looks like when you push that hard it gets pushed out too, plus the pressure of the baby fitting through that small space causes it to push out even more. And if there's any poo inside it's going to come out too. The anus usually recedes right back to normal or almost normal the second the baby comes out. In fact it's normal in a birth video to see it distended this much and then all of a sudden when the baby pops out it bursts back to normal.

@mysonmyworld25 yes you need to be careful. But babies can take a lot of manipulation because they're being squeezed through a tight spot anyway. Still better to remain hands off or very gentle hands. Mommy was pushing him out on her own she didn't need all that pulling. Even if it takes a couple contractions to push out the rest of the body that's okay. Doctor should have just held her hands out to catch instead of pulling.

@HeartFullOfBuckshot No not at all. Sometimes babies are just a little slow to get going. It is still getting plenty of oxygen from the umbilical cord as long as you don't cut it. Just keep rubbing it and most babies start crying right away!

@TheGalwayFarmer Actually nipple stimulation can be really good for a mommy in labor, it helps to bring on contractions. Good to help bring on contractions closer together. And if you are having trouble getting the placenta out in a home birth, sometimes it's helpful to get some privacy, dim the lights and have daddy lick, kiss and finger your nipples. All of a sudden the placenta plops out!

@Nash162008 Birthing this way, "doggy style" if we're using slang, is actually a great position to birth in. Doggy style promotes nice big opening of the pelvis and leaves lots of room for the baby to get out. When you leave women alone and don't tell them what position to get in, very often they will end up in some version of a doggy style, usually hands and knees, just knees, or leaning over a bed (or husband!) like this. Women instinctively know the best position to birth their babies!

This is normal and if you notice it immediately recedes to much more normal looking as soon as the baby is pushed out. In some births the anus in one second goes from a huge bulge to the next moment, once the baby is out, back to nothing. Very fascinating stuff the way the body pushes out a baby.

As a doula I often discuss non standard pushing positions with moms. Since they have no visual reference at times they are somewhat inhibited to do what feels right to them. I have recommended this video for 2 clients to watch and both thought it was the most informative thing they have yet to get on birthing.

This video has already helped one mom deliver as she wished in modified squat.

Great birth for a hospital birth. I wish they would just keep their hands off the baby. All that traction on their neck is not good, that is why all babies should be checked by chiropractors right away. Would you ever pull that much on a newborns neck? Of course not.
