Thanx for the tips, I watched "surveillance" (great job on the music btw.) and "drag me to hell" , And I liked them both. So I got 3 movie tips for you (just in case you haven't seen them): 1 - Shaun of the Dead
2 - Dead Snow
3 - Cannibal! the Musical
have fun ! (and I'll be looking forward for new 10th dim videos)
Wow! I'd never heard a word about Surveillance, but the cover looked great, so I took a chance on it. I loved it! It was a rare happy surprise. Major kudos for your excellent work on it! I had no idea you were involved.
Being in a talkative mood tonight, (haha) I' dlove to know what other people think makes a really good horror film.
For me it's the element of not understanding; wondering what something means, why it happened- more the little things than the whole story or scene. Steven King isn't a literary genius, but he was very good at that for a while. (I think it was during his cocaine phase) Books/films of his like "Carrie" are alright, but a bit too plump for my taste. Anyway, I'll end here, whoops!
u should watch the movie cube. its about a group stuck in a mechanism that is full of deadly traps. it is so scary cause there is never an explanation as to why. it is kind of scary to think that one day you could be put in a torture machine for no reason. one of the best lines is "there is no reason for it, big brother isn't watching you." cause in most other horror movies people die for a reason like the killer wants to kill everyone of a given group because of actions beyond their control.
I agree, the best horror films are ones that leave you guessing about what's really going on. There's also a real art to letting the audience relax now and then so that you can startle them again - 90 minutes of continuous "jump out" scenes does not a good horror movie make. :)
I also have to add that as a typical scorpio, I love to delve into the most extreme scenarios and face my fears completely until I have no more. I'm so preoccupied with death and the afterlife that people say I'm more there than here! I've read every good horror book imaginable, and was a fan of true crime stories and serial killer bios for years, as well as the topics ghosts, witchcraft, UFOs, you name it. There's almost nothing that can scare me anymore, so I'm picky in that way!
Sweet. Thanks Rob. Personally, I think horror films aren't what they used to be. The old ones (50s-70s, esp. the U.K. ones) are more subtle and based on psychology, teasing your fears. The films these days are so "in your face" with too much action that they're practically satires and clichés. The only horror film I've seen in the last ten years that really spooked me was Blair Witch Project, because it was all such a riddle, with no worn-out gimmicks. Totally original.
Had never heard of He Was a Quiet Man, but just went to rottentomatoes and checked out the great reviews, looks like a film I would love. Also as an interesting bit of synchronicity, Surveillance is co-written and directed by Jennifer Lynch. Several of the positive reviews compare He Was a Quiet Man to Jennifer's first film, a very strange and often criticized piece called Boxing Helena. Definitely have to put this one on my "check it out" list, thanks for mentioning it!
atleast you apologized jacobbill, remember this IS the mans own blog though, he can upload what he wants, and i can understand being excited to talk about something more mainstream media that you got a chance to work on.
great vid btw. i also have always had a soft spot for the horror genre as well, though not black comedy and torcher porn, more like the haunted house style horror.
house on haunted hill(90's remake and original) comes to mind, not the dreadful sequel.
Dogma is another movie that makes light of a serious situation.

Have as many side trips as you like Rob!!
One of my favourire films was David Lynch's "Eraserhead" which is certainly set in a strange reality.
