why did we have that stupid gock block through our entire first part of the show.? not gonna lie, made us sound very beginner-ish. I hated those voice overs too.. just didn't come together that year.
@Ibakebiscuits I actually enjoyed this show! I'm not sure why so many people thought this was such a terrible show. I will say though that I thought the plume trick at the end would have had a lot more affect had it not also been done the year before at finals, LOL.
That show woulda been soooo much better if my dang piano hadn't stopped working in the middle of the ballad and I had been able to play my 2 solos at the end of the closer!
not trying to be rude, but I think they deserved 5th. did anyone else see the first flag feature in the opener? A MESS. it got better, but starting off on a bad foot sets a negative tone. wando deserved to win. it's not about what school is the biggest or has the most money statewide. that would have no effect on grand nationals, and wando placed in finals there. stop making excuses, it just wasn't summerville's year. ps- those voiceovers are cheesy.
This year's show knocks this one out of the park. We are taking home the gold for our director's tenth year here. We already have the first two parts of the show on the field.
Haha 5th place? That's ridiculous...this would be 1st place where I live. South Car. is lucky to have so many awesome bands. I think sadly whoever has the most money and members at the time becomes state champs. Dont get me wrong, Wando is one of my all-time favorites and totally desevres first, but 5th for this? strange...
for some reason, i am not a big fan of the ballad for this show. i seem to skip it most of the time. but i think this show was amazing for the limited number of veterans. i know that when i was visiting these guys, there were many new faces to be seen. good job. i wonder how you guys got beat by byrnes though.
I loved it this year! i was in guard for "Where?" And i had the time of my life. We did so good! I was crying so hard after this. i want it all back. God, i love my guard and band people :)
Worthy of watching. Good to see a drumline again. Strange to hear woodwinds in a marching band.. One thing that needs to go is the voice over garbage. Very distracting and weird. At least it wasn't the PC green crap this year.
I understand that you marched in an era where voiceovers were unheard of. But for what it's worth, it does tell a story. Voiceovers allow bands to do more complex shows and not have the audience wondering how it all ties together. No offense intended, but if bands were still doing the traditional high-step patriotic shows every year, I guarantee most students wouldn't be interested. The reason why v/o's aren't going away is because they actually enhance the show when used correctly.
We didn't high step and as far as audience goes, they are more confused by the excess crap going on. As far as patriotic goes, we could use more of it and if it loses the students, their parents have failed them. I'll give you the more complex bit, lots of work went into it and it shows, but if one were to transport the band from the 80s to 90s for a comparison, people would get more goosebumps from the larger more powerful band and THAT is how you measure the effect!
I personally can agree that the old-school shows are entertaining. But nowadays, it's all about media convergence. Most students need to see that their activities are up to date with today's trends and with technology. In other words, they need something to make marching band "cool" to them. I hear what you're saying, but if the kids had a problem with it, they either wouldn't participate, or you wouldn't see it being used. And at the end of the day, it's the kids that matter the most.
You sound like you have it together! It was cool back in my day to be in it and with the apathy I see with band programs and other things, whatever it takes I suppose to get interest is good. As you say the kids matter the most. I went to your page and saw the vid with you publically speaking. Very good job. I do the same, but in a Military capacity. Keep it up!
Thanks! I love what I do. So now you can probably tell why I like voiceovers so much, LOL. In a military capacity, you say? Well, I'm sure you couldn't really elaborate on it, but it sounds pretty cool!
While we were walking to finals performance I thought I heard Summerville playing an excerpt from Summer Dances.. but I don't seem to hear it in the show. :( That would have been clever. btw, why am I hearing a metronome for half of the show.. or is that someone tapping out the beat?

Not to be a dick. But what was the logic behind tuning the snare drums to where they sound like garbage?

i think if they wuold have put the final movement at the beginning (excluding the final slow part) this show would have been way greater
