I remember winning a dance contest with a beautiful young Puerto Rican girl named Evelyn. We won dancing to "I Feel Love" by Donna Summer. Evelyn could spin in and out of my arms so fast people just stopped and watched. There was this unwritten challenge with the women who could dance in the highest heels. All of the really good dancers had no problem. We had a blast dancing back then and it was one of the best times of my life.
Some say that it was Gary Numan's, "Are Friends Electric" was the first electronic pop song. I'm not sure since I read that the likes of Brian Eno and David Bowie went wild over this one! Cerrone did supernature too way before Gary Numan. I will say that gary Numan did a very good contribution too.
Donna Summer rocked the whole genre with this. She was sincerely vilified at the time, This song transported her directly to Queen of Disco. I know. I was there. The sound was unique and blew everyone away including the critics.
Love it, love it, love it!!!! When I get a moments piece, I place myself in the middle of the room and bang up the stereo to full volume and just let this brilliant song wash over me. (Not sure the neighbours appreciate this!)
I won a dance contest dancing to this! Giogio Moroder was and still is a genius! This slides right into Chase from Midnight Express and From Here to Eternity.
THE ERA WAS A SO STEEPED IN RAW SENSUAL TALENT. IT WAS A PRISTINE TIME 70S EARLY 80S BEFORE THE VIDEO GENERATION.THATS THE ONLY WAY WE GET OVERINDULGED UPPER WEST SIDERS PASSING THEMSELVES OFF AS ENTERTAINERS/TALENTS.... AND I AM ONLY 46
The music that Donna Summer put out during the disco years was second to none! Yes, there were other excellent female singers like Gloria Gaynor and France Jolie, but Donna's songs are not only superb but iconic as well! Yes, she was lucky to have excellent musicians and a fabulous producer like Georgio Moroder behind her, but she completed the whole package...she was the "cherry on the sundae"! Her fabulous voice had a very unique quality that still has no equal to this day! DONNA ROCKS!!!
@Dancer810 Couldn't agree more. And this song was almost twenty years ahead of its time. This was the dawn of techno. Which still didn't surface till the nineties.
I love this song Donna I still happy u still playing ur song even one call she work hard for money. yes that true becoz jobs hard find. from Allen Hamm
Amazing digital-quality sound! I'm playing it on my brand new desktop speakers right now! Total RAPTURE!!!!!! How can anybody sit still to this song?!?! :D
There is also a version of a song called "True Confessions," by the Irish punk band The Undertones, which utilizes the same synthesizer effect (which I picture as the electronic equivalent of one stroking a stick against the stakes of a picket fence, as one rides a bicycle) as on "I Feel Love."
Today, Blondie probably wouldn't tackle this one. But, in her prime, Debbie Harry also had quite the set of pipes, is still quite good within her range; and quite an impressive body of work for Blondie anyway.
No matter which version by Donna Summer, this song is a positively ethereal experience.
Incidentally, Blondie did a pretty faitfhul cover of "I Feel Love" as, I think, a B-side to a version of the "Union City Blue" record (circa 1979), when Blondie were still intact and in their prime, before Debbie Harry had to start lowering the keys for her live vocals.
What makes this song great (in my opinion): Donna Summer's genuine expression of the amazing feeling of giving all of oneself to someone else and the undeniable joy that ensues-to express that in such a convincing manner and in such a way that, as the best poems do, say it indirectly...with the accessory of a nerdy dude with a great idea on his synthesizer. Excellent combination and just the sort not permitted in today's formulaic, watered-down, packaged, corporate, music industry.
There are moments in music history that just can't be ignored; this is one of them! I rank this alongside Hendrix' Purple Haze and Smells like teen spirit by Nirvana! Why you may ask?!? Because this track set a trend (thanks to G. Moroder) in electronica/dance that still have an influence on popular music more than 30 years after it's release! Classic!
this was what? 40 years ago? ehy kids listen and learn. and do something like that now if you can : moroder, what a vision! it has everything, love, passion, melody. simply stunning, after 40 years
