He has that quality that makes others smack of insufferable pretense, true. But he uses it in such a way, with deliberation and self-conscious amusement, that we realize: Lynch's work, in pretending to be what it's not, is being exactly what it is.
Sort of like that saying about Hollywood, "Behind all that fake tinsel, there's real tinsel."
What needs to be understood about David Lynch is that he is a creative visionary, it doesn't matter what art form he works, it will essentially be Lynch. He makes things, creates worlds, what people make of them isn't really the point. Its the journey and not the destination that is important. - The same applies to me.
It seems to have bothered you that pointed out blue lack of any vocals from lynch and I guess you can call Sparklehorse pretentious if you feel the need but that word suggests someone thats full of themselves and that is also an arty psuedo intellectual which dosent in any way apply to mark linous. One of the tracks Lynch did on the album sounds the same as the two tracks he did for Inland Empire. And lynch's vocal work and photography is no more pretentious than his films.
Anyone who wants more songs like this and Ghost Of Love in which david actually sings (that isnt the case with blue bob) you need to check out dark night of the soul by sparklehorse and danger mouse (he did photography for it, for anyone interested in David's work with a still camera). Anyway, it has two tracks on which he does the vocals (Star Eyes (I Cant Catch It) and Dark Night Of The Soul). It would be so great if he did vocals for an entire album with this kind of sound.
@labotamysausagedog I heard a few songs from that album and I pretty much considered to be among the ranks of virtually all other pretentious--I mean Indie--college-kid fair. Personally I think Lynch would be better off steering clear of collaborations; to me they seen to just divert his attention toward anything really substantial; but that's just my opinion, and surely a lonely one.
Quoted from poster: "it's a real treat for the ears."
You got that right.
Listening to this stuff from ISLAND EMPIRE makes me think that there may be a chance of a collaboration between Lynch and Tom Waits in the future..... the heavy reverb is something that's very reminicent of the sounds on Bone Machine... just a thought....
I have always loved the music from Lynch's films, and this song, along with "Ghost of Love," is the archetypal dark force of pop romance. Oh that twing-twang--"It marks me the deepest." Somewhere out there in another dimension is a bobby-socked girl swaying that tune. Thanks for posting.
@runitecastle that would be a major eargasm for sure, i don't think the universe will survive such epicness all in one place. but hey, why the hell not?
If you like this, I suggest you to get the songs Dark night of the soul, and Star Eyes, from Sparklehorse's last album. Those songs feature outstanding vocals by Lynch himself.
I remember seeing a video on YT of his recording 'Ghost Of Love'; I know he used something, not sure really, but try checking out that video if you can find it.
For some reason i can't stop listening tho this song and ghost of love... anyone knows more music like this or music from david lynch that can be compared to this music?
That's the point. All three have radically different approaches to making music and that's what puts them in the same bought: they all do it from a non-musical perspective.
Cool. I don't know what I was expecting Lynch's singing voice to sound like but it wasn't that. It sounds like he's singing over some Twin Peaks background music. Also, given how heavy he is into Transcendental Meditation I'm surprised to see a pic of him with a cig. Figured he was kind of a health nut.
Yeah, he is a rather odd person, it's hard what to expect from him really. If you like this, check out his 'Blue Bob' album; it's sort of the parent to this project I think.

Better yet, team up with Portishead, Tom Waits, Radiohead, or Brian Eno. Think of the freaking possibilities, especially with freaking Eno.

@verebril It is addictive to listen to. I'd recommend the Dark Night of the Soul collaboration with Danger Mouse & Sparklehorse.
This reminds me of the musical baby Sparklehorse and Portishead could have.

He is a genius, why doesn't he make an entire album with this dark melodic music? Extremely great.

He should seriously cut a whole album. He'd be right at home between Jandek and Scott Walker.
