Sigh...I wish people would read the bloody descriptions before commenting, it should be compulsory. Meh.... Not that impressive. I shot a golf ball with my cannon at about 33psi, and it went thru four pieces of 9/16 plywood.... Videos of which will hopefully be coming soon.
@PressuredAirCannon Well it depends on a lot of things. Such as, I was 15 when I made this, I've made far more powerful cannons, this cannon wasn't designed for performance, by no means is it that powerful or intended to be.
These days I've moved on from pnuematics, the power potential is very limited compared to a hybrid in my opinion. Supersonic golfball is my next goal, which wont be very hard to achieve and will have roughly 3500 joules of energy (at a little more than mach 1).
I dont know all the specs on it, I would have to remeasure. For the most part, the length of the barrel is not proportional to the volume of the combustion chamber, and such follows with nearly every other aspect of my cannon. It was all arbitrary to me at the time, was my first cannon, and I was merely playing around. I never reffered to any other example, I just made my own thing. It is too complicated to quickly sum up. I know every part, I can provide a list.. Its kinda rediculous though.
@shadywalker You don't even know the rough diameter/length of your barrel/chamber? That's weird. Anyway, as for your tight fitting projectile; if your barrel is only 1.5" in diameter, at 40PSI there will be about 70pounds of force on your projectile. So if you put your projectile in, put 70 pounds of weight on it and it doesn't move, i'll be satisfied enough that a burst disk wont do much but i'd be worried about your projectile jamming.

1.5' of 4" abs 4' of 2" abs 2' of 3" abs 9-10 2" water pipe couplings. white barbed things made to insert into that cheap ass 2 inch water pipe. (they need to be turned into sleeves that fit snug inside a 2 inch barrel. aka, grind the barbs and shit off.) 1x 4" abs coupling 1x 4" -3 inch increaser 1x 2" - 4 inch bushing 1x pair of 3 inch screw on couplings, male and female ( to make removable barrel) 1x 4 inch cleanout 1x 1-1/4 - 2 inch increaser 2x 3 inch couplings I was bored..
@shadywalker you'll find that a 2" piston valve is actually far louder than combustions. the sound quality is due to my poor camera, even my hybrid (louder than a handgun) sounds the same.
@MrCrowley45 hmm, my cannon was louder than any rifle I have.. Louder than a 30-06.. shotgun.. That was after I managed to make it sleightly more silent. I was using oxy and propane. Not sure how the noise level would compare to your compression cannon, but I know it would hit with more force, so one could assume that the force of explostion was more intense. Of couse, that is mere speculation, based on the visual results of your cannon vs. whatever you were shooting at.
@shadywalker Ah in that case that's a whole different bag of tricks. I imagine you're generating a slightly lower pressure but you probably have more flow through a larger orfice. If you use a burst disk, then you could really up the performance of your cannon.
@MrCrowley45 A burst disk is virtually useless. I customed the barrel of my cannon so that its diameter is 1-5/8 of an inch in diameter. Found the right parts to do it. So I dont lose a bunch of exhaust from the gap around the ball. Aside from typically working simialr to a sabot, a burst disk allows for the pressure to reach a peak, as determined by the resistance the disk provides.. but my barrel is such a good fit, I really dont see the need. Not sure how much pressure it generates.
@shadywalker A burst disk will never act as a sabot. In this case it is solely to allow combustion to reach its peak without the projectile moving. There will be a fraction of time where the combustion isn't at its peak but the projectile is half way up the barrel. I've never seen a burst disk not improve performance on a combustion before. What is your cannon made out of btw? Hope not PVC haha.
@MrCrowley45 if the busrt disk were made of cardbaord, and I placed one in my cannon each shot, it would act as a sabot in the way that as it is pushed down the barrel, it will be forced to conform to the obstacle in its way, thus likely helping to retain pressure that might otherwise escape. A sabot does not do this, it is designed to surround the projectile and provide a seal, but I can see how a burst disk will have similar results.. my cannon has no need for a sabot.
@shadywalker Why make it from cardboard? Something like tinfoil would be better.
Perhaps latter on i'll use HGDT and see the performance increase in using a burst disk but I'm a bit busy at the moment. I wouldn't stand around your cannon haha, oxy prop and ABS, no thanks haha. Unless you're using pressure rated ABS and not the normal DWV stuff.
@MrCrowley45 I made mine thick, abs fittings happen to allow for multiple layers that fit snug enough to bond. Tinfoil would work, but my barrel is snug. It would only increase the chance that something will go wrong.. I have small holes in my combustion chamber, so if it ever fails to explode properly, the pressure simply drains out at a different rate. I have tested it, and found it to be seemingly impossible to rupture my combustion chamber. If it ever ruptured, not much would happen.
@shadywalker What projectiles are you firing that fit so snug and what is the dimensions of your cannon (barrel diameter and length, chamber dia and lenght)?
I personally think the holes are a bit over the top, with ABS, it will tear not explode anyway.

The field I fired on in one scene had houses behind it, but I wasn't firing for distance, the golfball wouldn't have reached.
Yeah. No matter how much force is behind the ball, it cant move past its terminal velocity. Thats how fast it can move. If a club hits it high into the air, it will achieve terminal velocity by falling...
A golfball can move past its terminal velocity with an outside force (the cannon), but with only two forces acting on it (friction adn gravity), it can't move past its terminal velocity.
So when a golfball falls, even though it has been fired from my cannon, it wont fall any faster then if a golfer had hit it.

Not sure what the other two are but I'm pretty sure it's not PVC-U. Though I'm not certain. The chamber is 50mm PN12 PVC pipe also listed as 'Class D' and the barrel is 40mm PN18 PVC pipe, I think.

pumpkin chuckers are usually pneumatic and can go thousands of feet\yards...i have personally launched a 5 lb bottle rocket well over 500 feet into the air... a potato would be smaller and create less drag than my rocket did...

You obviosuly have no idea what a piston valve is, because if you did you would realise how much more powerful they are then a combustion, on average a sprinkler valved pneumatic will out-do a combustion. Not only is my gun better then a sprinkler valved pneumatic, it has roughly 6x the flow, more flow means more air can escape faster.
i made a combustion spud gun and its way better than this. this gun is weak. Mine will shoot a 2 pound projectile out of sight.. and thats shooting it at about a 70 degree angle.

Haha you obviously have no idea what you're talking about. A pneumatic the same size of a combustion pressurized to say 50psi will beat a hair spray combustion any day. Not only does this have a piston valve but its pressurized to like 110psi which a combustion can't reach. This is probably about 6x more powerful then a combustion.
A combustion cannot out do this gun unless it was huge and used metered MAPP gas. This gun uses a piston valve which is one of the best valves you can use on a pneumatic, a combustion will not do more damage, im shooting a golfball at about 160m/s at a distance of about 380m. Pneumatics are alot better then combustions.
Im not much of a hybrid man myself, theyre difficult to make where I live(New Zealand) so I don't know exact figures but head over to spudfiles . com and have a look
Also it depends on your fuel,atmospheric pressure, altitude, tempreature, pressure inside chamber, what you used to compress the mix, chamber volume, projectile weight and diameter, burst disk(or valve) opening time and flow coef. Too many variables, post your specs on spudfiles . com and have a look around.
Na it was fired in the direction of a golfcourse that was closed due to bad weather. I was shooting onto an open fairway 80m away, I had checked for anyone on the course walking jusr before the shot. Im not that reckless :)

@MrCrowley45 if the busrt disk were made of cardbaord, and I placed one in my cannon each shot, it would act as a sabot in the way that as it is pushed down the barrel, it will be forced to conform to the obstacle in its way, thus likely helping to retain pressure that might otherwise escape. A sabot does not do this, it is designed to surround the projectile and provide a seal, but I can see how a burst disk will have similar results.. my cannon has no need for a sabot.

Perhaps latter on i'll use HGDT and see the performance increase in using a burst disk but I'm a bit busy at the moment. I wouldn't stand around your cannon haha, oxy prop and ABS, no thanks haha. Unless you're using pressure rated ABS and not the normal DWV stuff.

@MrCrowley45 I made mine thick, abs fittings happen to allow for multiple layers that fit snug enough to bond. Tinfoil would work, but my barrel is snug. It would only increase the chance that something will go wrong.. I have small holes in my combustion chamber, so if it ever fails to explode properly, the pressure simply drains out at a different rate. I have tested it, and found it to be seemingly impossible to rupture my combustion chamber. If it ever ruptured, not much would happen.

@shadywalker What projectiles are you firing that fit so snug and what is the dimensions of your cannon (barrel diameter and length, chamber dia and lenght)?
I personally think the holes are a bit over the top, with ABS, it will tear not explode anyway.

I've clearly said multiple times...I WAS FIRING ONTO A CLOSED GOLFCOURSE AND A FIELD. If the golfball hit someone on the golf course, it'd do no more damage then if it was hit from a golf club. Go learn physics.
The field I fired on in one scene had houses behind it, but I wasn't firing for distance, the golfball wouldn't have reached.

Yeah. No matter how much force is behind the ball, it cant move past its terminal velocity. Thats how fast it can move. If a club hits it high into the air, it will achieve terminal velocity by falling...

A golfball can move past its terminal velocity with an outside force (the cannon), but with only two forces acting on it (friction adn gravity), it can't move past its terminal velocity.
So when a golfball falls, even though it has been fired from my cannon, it wont fall any faster then if a golfer had hit it.

Not sure what the other two are but I'm pretty sure it's not PVC-U. Though I'm not certain. The chamber is 50mm PN12 PVC pipe also listed as 'Class D' and the barrel is 40mm PN18 PVC pipe, I think.

You obviosuly have no idea what a piston valve is, because if you did you would realise how much more powerful they are then a combustion, on average a sprinkler valved pneumatic will out-do a combustion. Not only is my gun better then a sprinkler valved pneumatic, it has roughly 6x the flow, more flow means more air can escape faster.

i made a combustion spud gun and its way better than this. this gun is weak. Mine will shoot a 2 pound projectile out of sight.. and thats shooting it at about a 70 degree angle.

A pneumatic the same size as a combustion in most cases will easily beat it performance wise, not only is this 6x better then a normal pneumatic it will kick a combustions ass soo far you wont even see it. learn ytour facts mate, who cares about shooting out of site, I can shoot a golfball 400m with a 80cm barrel, its impossible to shoot a potato that far with a combustion.

haha retard learn your physics. A potato has a drag coef of about .5, a bullet ranges from .2-.5 and a golfball has a coef of .35 the lower the coef the less drag, meaning the further its goes as there is less air resistance.
every knows your wrong, a golfball is designed to go far, a potato is designed to be grown in the ground.
combustions can only get so powerful, Learn your physics you are trying to defy physics, unless your religious and have a reason to defy physics you a retard

A piston valve is a high flow and fast opening valve, i'm, using 110psi, a normal combustion can only generate 40psi, a advanced combustion 80-100psi if lucky. Without the piston valve I still would kick your ass, there is more to spudguns then combustions, face it, you have no clue

Not only does this have a piston valve but its pressurized to like 110psi which a combustion can't reach. This is probably about 6x more powerful then a combustion.

A combustion cannot out do this gun unless it was huge and used metered MAPP gas. This gun uses a piston valve which is one of the best valves you can use on a pneumatic, a combustion will not do more damage, im shooting a golfball at about 160m/s at a distance of about 380m. Pneumatics are alot better then combustions.
Im not much of a hybrid man myself, theyre difficult to make where I live(New Zealand) so I don't know exact figures but head over to spudfiles . com and have a look

Also it depends on your fuel,atmospheric pressure, altitude, tempreature, pressure inside chamber, what you used to compress the mix, chamber volume, projectile weight and diameter, burst disk(or valve) opening time and flow coef. Too many variables, post your specs on spudfiles . com and have a look around.

Na it was fired in the direction of a golfcourse that was closed due to bad weather. I was shooting onto an open fairway 80m away, I had checked for anyone on the course walking jusr before the shot. Im not that reckless :)
