I knew a horse that does that but if you pull her back she canters or trots or walks. if you get her to rack and you keep pushing her she goes faster and faster and faster i was never able to find out how fast she can go cuz the pony we ran with always went out of veiw and we came to the end of the road before i come open her up : / (it was a longggg freaking road to and the pony we raced was like 13.2hh and the rackin horse was about 16hh and all legs so it wasnt very hard to leave him behind.
I feel like getting trampled by a racking horse would be so much worse than getting trampled by a full-on galloping horse. There's no real logic behind this statement, I just would not like to be under those hooves.
Incredible looking gait... looks like it has been speeded up, I assume this must come naturally to Icelandic ponies? i rode a pacing horse once, and it felt very alien, and ''side to side'' as opposed to a diagonal trot. The pony looks wonderful with his ''badass mane!''
@icelandic29 I called him a ''pony'' because of his height..not strength, but if they are called ''horses'' that is fine by me! [In England a ''pony'' is 14.2hh and under, it has no distinction as to strength, simply tallness!
The horse enjoys it! As any horse enjoys to speed of course!
I have an older racinghorse gelding. If people are watching it is impossible to get him to dressage. He loves to give a show than! cheering will only make him go faster.
i just wanted to leave a positively surprised comment, that there are no comments like "the poooor horse"... but then i looked closer... and found someone again who thinks to know everything better... its annoying guys! stop telling good riders strange things only because YOU wouldnt be able to carry this weight.
ive ridden one of these before and they trully are incredible(: in a way, its like riding a couch cuz you dont move all that much when they go that fast!
I love that horse, I am amazed at the display of utter ignorance and the rubbish spouted by folk! There is no other breed of horse in Iceland, they have never been bred for kids to ride, they have only ever been bred for adults.

these horses never stay sound for life. their legs and gait is a shock absorber and the shock goes somewhere into the horse. That is why you usually see them with bad stifles and hocks, they can not handle these speeds. And I bet these people call themselves 'horse lovers'... how many horses will you ruin their life by doing this. I would never let a horse to any of these speed events, its cruelty. And why such a big rider on a little pony? He's way too big for the horse.
@swapmomma Rubbish! They do stay sound for life. I have 5! Have you ridden one, have you met one? They are big boned, tough and good weight-carriers. It is not cruel. It is a natural gait. My horse actually cannot trot - never has done, never will.
@swapmomma You don't sound like someone who knows these fine little horses. Perhaps you should get to know them ;). They aren't like regular horses, and its not the size of the rider that matters as much as his experience! Also, these paces come natural to Icelandic horses, unlike some other breeds that have unnatural gaits. If I let my horse go with long reins, she'll go at this speed without any encouragement because she likes it and wants to. And they'll let you know if they don't, seriously.
@MistyPonyIsLove icelandics are not sored, it's a natural gait enhanced without many of the "devices" used on breeds such as walking horses and saddlebreds. not all gaited horses are sored.
