@TheLuke1729 I'm not even going to bother looking at your profile to see where you're from, only an american could be so stupid :') You people really do know how to make your country the laughing stock of the world. Why does it mean so much to you people for you to think you are the best in the world at everything? But anyway just to put you in your place. RAF - Best pilots - Best technology - Best track record - And most respected air force to ever exist. Now go boost your ego some more yank :)
@xHurrendous Yes, we do really well with the whole pilots losing certification because there aren't enough planes to keep them flying, and there not being enough planes because the supply chain for spare parts is buggered so they have to cannibalise aircraft to keep others flying. And we just retired our signals intelligence aircraft, the Nimrod, and won't have a replacement to 2014, when we buy the USAF's old ones. In terms of capability we're somewhere behind Russia or maybe China
The footage must be from the 1960's rather than the 70's, maybe around 1967. By 1969 the Red Arrows paintscheme definitely had a lightning flash on each side below the canopy. I think that was added around 1968, maybe earlier. Great to see this on YouTube, thanks for posting it.
@willwoodhouse yeah i live in Grimsby so they used to pop down the river Humber to perform displays, do they still practise in spain or have they moved again?
@RoundBrushSteve not spain any more, they do their pre-season lead up training in Cyprus and then some more back at Scampton when they get into the display season
great low passes! I remember many days years ago shooting the same type of shots with F4 phantoms. My ears have never been the same since, bit worth the views.
@Graham527r They change the crews year on year... they'll be back to the full 9 next year. It was tragic indeed that that pilot (John Egging I think his name was, am I right on that?) was killed, but they all knew it could happen.

They never let me fly that low when I drove Gnats while in training!
Though I'd have probably bottled it!!
The Gnat was a lovely aircraft though as an advanced trainer not too easy to fly and I often found it a handful though I still managed to complete the course somehow. I'm a Quo fan so loved the music too.
I got a ride in one of these back in the 90s.Actualy went up in a French trainer first.500 bux a pop and well worth it.Col Ed Young retired in Miami was giving rides. He thought i was nut when i asked him if we could do some red flag.lol Gave me that, are you on drugs look then how did you hear about Red flag.Great stress relief and better than sex.
IRONY: we spent how many years trying to engineer human flight to get OFF THE GROUND?, and now we are in the air, we are trying to get CLOSE TO THE GROUND? lol
My Brother in Law and his CoPilot were lkilled in one of these Gnats - metal fatigue. RAF Upper Heyford Oxfordshire December 1971. That crash contributed to their ultimate withdrawal from service in 1979
@brightlights456X Waldenhouse2 was referring to an incident at RAF Upper Heyford on 13th December 1971 when XR567 on a routine training flight over the American airbase towards the end of the flypast his wingtip fell off and the gnat nosedived into the runway. Flt.Lt. David Clem Longdon and Flt.Lt. Richard "Dick" Michael Storr were killed.
@brightlights456X It would have to be the Hawker Siddley Buccaner a low-level strike aircraft with nuclear weapon delivery capability serving with the Royal Navy and the Royal Air Force between 1962 and 1994, including service in the 1991 Gulf War. I used to stand at the side of the runway in Gibraltar and watch a pair of these take off. It was like being at the loudest disco in the world. Great days indeed.
@brightlights456X In the RAF back in the '70's you could walk from the men's accomodation block to the main hangers by walking beside the runway. If jets were taking off you couldn't get much closer. The SR-71 has been retired since 1998 The Air Force quickly disposed of their SR-71s, leaving NASA with the two last flyable Blackbirds until 1999. All other Blackbirds have been moved to museums except for the two SR-71s and a few D-21 drones retained by the NASA Dryden Flight Research Center.
Gibraltar is very very small, they got traffic lights side to side to the airport runway, when there is no aircraft traffic the cars drive across. You can see it on google maps if you think thats not true
@waldenhouse sorry for your loss all those years ago. but if your b-i-l's crash contributed to their withdrawl, is it normal that it takes 8 years for it to happen? I know you can't just get rid of all of them, but still, 8 years is 8 years.
