I totally love this song!! We are playing this in EPYOS at El Paso, and it is really a pleasure for 7th and 8th graders to play this! Cellos sound great! Violas play like pros! 2Violins are awesome!!
base and cello are the heart of the orchestra, the violas are the lungs, the violins are the eyes <3 and the conductor is the heart (if there IS one) :D
Our orchestra is playing this piece, and we're also using it as the music for our seat auditions... This is really fun to play. Violins FTW! *skips out humming the music*
Every school orchestra in the world has played the St. Paul's Suite, and there's reason for that. It's easy and fun to play. Holst may not have been the greatest composer of all time, but he was the greatest at writing music that ordinary people (not virtuosos) can play.
This sounds like an older recording. What orchestra is it?
@agormanvideos you're welcome but if you're thinking of setting up a performance of it... the ideal size of a small orchestra for it would be around 5 for 1st and for 2nd violins each, 4 violas (AT LEAST!!! ;D) and... yeah, between 4-6 celli... that would be good...
@agormanvideos that's just the composition of our orchestra at that time... I'd put up at least 3 violas, if not 4; 6 first and 6 second violins and between 6 and 8 celli, depending on how good they are at varying the dynamics... if I were the conductor... ;D
Well, I don't have much experience with orchestral strings, but I know the viola is slightly larger and lower-pitched than the violin. But to be honest, I've always wanted to play the cello...:)
I remember playing this suite for a concert around a month ago. It was probably my favorite movement of the whole suite. And the suite was my favorite piece of the concert. And I was a second violin so I got to play that amazing soli part.
I actually really like your idea of posting the notes as the song progresses. But it makes me wonder how conductors can cue every section at the right time so consecutively. That would give me a headache!
Orchestra for the win! Down with band! The rivalry in my school never ends. :)
@C3POmeetsData it's kind of unavoidable, seeing as i'm playing it in orchestra. I do not need to be educated on his writing style. I see it every single day and i'd say i'm fairly familiar with it. Thank you for your answer. Another tip off to the fact that i play could be that i did specify 3 pages.
we're playing this song too :) mostly the 1st and 4th mvt.'s. We were going to do the Ostinato at one point (2nd violin part's a little redundant to say the least) but we had to make more room so out it went. either way, i love playing this piece, with or without the 2nd mvt. :P
I really hate the fact that our orchestra director replaced this with Ostinato for State MPA... We would've done better with this piece than Ostinato... All that wasn't perfect was the ridiculous run for the violins but it was pretty darn decent. >_<
@FreakofFrapps You bet!! Cellos rule! I want to play this with my orchestra, although it is a full symphony orchestra, so the brass and wind can take a break and let us strings show what we can do!
dang. awesome piece, but whatever orchestra played this played it like extremely fast compared to what we did in my orchestra class. gotta love holst! :D
@azzazin404 WORD!!!!!!!! FOR REAL! You play I play I love it soo much we have a sound that violins can't dream of and that the best of cello's can't match.
