Very neat! You say it only works with the sun directly overhead...what if you put a mirror on top so that sunrays at an angle were directed straight down towards the parabolic water pool?
I actually have not had success with using a magnifying glass to start a fire making a coal is easy blowing it into fire is harder than it looks anyone want to give pointers?
What I used: 4 and 1/2 inch (11.25 centimeters according to my calculator) wide magnifying glass on bamboo (what I think is bamboo there is a patch growing near my house and is quite hardy)
Sweet. Next time I am stranded in the forrest I am DEFINITLEY building one of these. All I need is 20 pounds of lumber, a hammer, 4 inch screws and some wood glue and clamps. Construct the scaffold like above, then, using an air compressor and staple gun, apply a 5'x5' sheet of plastic. Next use the hose to spray 3 gallons of water on top. You'll have a blazing (luke warm) ray of light that can warm marshmallows. Sure to see you through survival in the dense Floridian outback.

Hey u know that u can boil the water rite in the bottel over an open flame or a focesd light point and even draink it afterwords. the bottel will worp a bit but as long as there is water to absorb the heat it will never melt throw but make sure there is water were the heat is being focesd. :)

hey your right i finely cooked my hot dog the right way. never knew you could make a focus point the size of 1 inch it worked dident need a tiny dot now wont burn.
@Shaunt1 Way up north the way this can be used is freeze the water , in fact do that twice and make a very powerful lens by puting the flat sides face to face . never did that but it should work wet 'em and stick 'em . I did learn bottles in my SUV full of H20 make smoke ! dont toss those bottles out the can and do start fires on the side of the road . The people that watch this kind of stuff don't litter !
thanks for your video's my son has some projects planned, including one like this. Also, thanks for using termenology I can understand without a science book and crazy conversion formulas to work out!
I did infact burn myself with a bottle of water one day just standing outside talking to someone. I thought at first it was a bee sting but I repeated my position and could clearly see the focal point comming out of the bottle. Good survival info. You could use mirrors to compinsate for the angle of the sun on your scafold! P.S. Dont build this lens on a deck or a dry grass field!!! ;-p
Very cool man. I went out today with a glass measuring bowl and managed to light my cigarette after a few minutes of finding the best focal point. That was about a quart of water in a partially round bowl. again, very cool. Fahrenheit, Celsius, friggin kelvin? Who gives a single rat's turd doogey? Admit it, your just butthurt because you can't think outside the bun, I mean box. Much love pendejo.
I really don't get how you can have "science" in your name and still use the Fahrenheit scale. Hey, I'm from the States myself and that's one of the first things we learned in science class back in grade school. It's just not professional. Plus, don't you get annoyed having to deal with those giant numbers? Surely your IR thermometer has a Celsius mode?
I suppose if you made a square frame and sealed the joints, adn stretched some aluminized mylar over the front and back you could suck some of the air out from in between and you would get a simple concentrating dish. The focal point would probably not be very sharp, but it would be easy/fast/cheap to make large dishes. With a little extra framing you could even make a huge shallow trough concentrator.

I understand that the hanging plastic sheet alone would form a catenoid, but does that act of loading it not tend to produce a parabaloid shape? (In much the same way that the cables of a suspension bridge change from catenary to parabola once the deck is suspended beneath. I really want to understand this because I am working on something similar.)
If not, what is the simplest way to get a hanging membrane to assume the shape of a parabaloid?
A friend of mine had a stainless steel bowl on his back deck with catfood in it. The food caught fire and was so hot it burned a hole 6 inches round through the wood.
Will try building one for our Solstice Celebration with an Earth Pipe under it filled with some home grown Ambrosia and smoke the Elements!(water, fire, earth, air!)!!!
It is a hybrid of both, because materials stretch the most at the longest point, more water rests in the center, the higher outer areas flatten out similar to a parabola. It is a similar opposite principal to the liquid spinning mirror. Both can only focus optimally straight up.
nice. I once was going to try to make a parabolic shape by a similar means of placing sand into a plastic suspended off the floor, then coat the bottom of the plastic with resin to hold its shape. I had some problems though and a mess so I gave it up. but if someone took a clear resin and poured it into a plastic sheet like you did with water, when solid would make a nice convex lens. just dont want any bubbles in the mix.
This is all very interesting, but could someone please tell me what practical applications this could be used for? I'm really interested in how the sun can be utilized for power. I get it with the solar panels, but I don't understand the deal with the lenses. Thx.
Ok, I found videos on the stirling engines and how the sun w/lenses run them....Ty. But what are you able to utilize the engines for? I really don't mean to be daft, I'm just trying to figure all of this out. I've so much to learn.
