It's never gonna happen to some people. Sad but true. So this song is false hope. What are the chances that you will find true love and get that love back. Pretty slim. I know I'm one of those people who will have to find out this sad truth. But hey, if other people actually find that I was wrong, I guess it will be worth it.
I think this is the only weak song on Black Tie White Noise. It sounds like a cheap knock off of "A Change is Gonna Come". I'm glad its just a cover and Bowie didn't write it. Decent performance tho, Bow.
I dig both versions. Bowie puts a little more soul and R&B in this version, which Morrissey's music has virtually none of. The whole point of covers is to make them your own. Bowie can do no wrong in my eyes, but I did kinda give up on Morrissey after Vauxhaul and I. But the Smiths do have a special place in heart cause I grew up listening to them.
The Wedding Songs, Jump They Say, I Feel Free, Nite Flights, Miracle Goodnight, Looking For Lester, You've Been Around - All great songs on a very good album. This in my opinion is the weakest but its still pretty good!
@harchiongkai not against marr. he & marr always split the lion's share of the smiths' royalties (40% each), while the drummer & bassist got like 10% each. so the rhythm section felt they deserved more and sued over it. the disagreement between morrissey and marr was mainly due to "creative & personal differences," not financial. although morrissey prolly did make a mistake by allowing HIS MOTHER to be the smiths' manager, which must have contributed to the breakup of the band...
@evilashxero This made Morrisey shedloads of cash and all the bloke could do was insult Bowie. Bowie has always said he doesn't think he's (himself) a good singer but has had moments of pure genius with songwriting and vocals , he is on record as saying such, Bowie made a pigs ear of this song but so what? Morrisey was out of order.
Absoutely mesmerizing tune with the most proper vocal sung the most needed way. Wish Mr. Bowie will treat us with more fruits of his future art. SOON.
Haven't heard his version. But he certainly is not anywhere close to Bowie's league as a vocalist. This is one of the weaker tracks from a sadly underrated but brilliant album by the way.
Oh, well. Morrissey's words when Bowie played this version was "it is so grand" and he had tears in his eyes. I kid you not. So I guess he thought at the time it was a great version. He would probably say otherwise now after his fallout with Bowie, but that is another matter.
As Morrissey is the writer of this song, and David Bowie is just covering the song it shows how much Bowie is a fan of the writing of Morrissey. It's a great thing to see other so called stars it so much of Morrissey to cover his songs. Now if the rest of the industry would just pull it's head out of their butts and let people hear music, it would be grand indeed. Instead they will continue to line thier silk pockets with money made by the likes of Puff Crappy and J Simpson.
@d1sintegration if you watch the promo vid for this bowie says mick ronson produced morriseys version of this and bowie felt it was somewhat a take on rock and roll suicide. so he covered this in the style he thought he would have done in 74'ish. whatever checkout the black tie white noise dvd /vhs, its pretty cool for the interview segs.
i totally agree. I think this is a brilliant album. One of his best. 'Black Tie White Noise' (the song),'Lucy can't Dance' and 'I know its gonng happen somday' are my favourite from the album.
Not one of my most played Bowie albums, but you kind of forget about how good his vocals were on this. And also this cover & "Nite Flights" were very good.
I'm a big Bowie fan, but could never really get into the 90's Outside/Earthling, but Heathen/Reality are masterpieces.
Morrissey's version kills this one!!!!!

@PokerPlum wasn't Morrissey involved in a long legal battle with Johnny Marr, the others in The Smiths over royalties and such.

Love the way he didn't include the bit Morrissey ripped off from Rock n Roll Suicide.

Bowie version of Morrissey's "I know it's gonna happen someday" is brilliant, istrionic, excellent!
walbianco 1 year ago
It's interesting that he covered this song, because the original always reminds me very much of "Rock n' Roll Suicide"
anchorlove06 2 years ago
@anchorlove06 Yea, that was exactly the reason Bowie covered it. The Morrissey version wass produced by Bowie guitarist Mick Ronson, by the way.
