What???! Please, this is ridiculous! why academy why? first you dont give the oscar to Glenn close in fatal atraction, and know you dont give her for dangerous liaisons? Glenn was the best actress that year. sorry but Glenn Close is the actress who had been more times robbed!
first of all, my english is not good enough to describe my thought although i love this accepting speeche jodie made for winning the oscar, you dont need to thank for bits and bobs for who wekl you audience know but she just said what she thought which is very important for everybodys life. i am so grateful that i have been a fan of hers since i was 12 yrs bitch
Sigourney Weaver was nominated for two great performances and left that night empty-handed, i felt sorry for her, she's a great actress, but i'm ok with Jodie Foster winning for her great performance in "The Accused" now Geena Davis for "The Accidental Tourist" i don't think she deserved it... Sigourney should have won!
@vadimzdonutube ummmm....have you ever seen "As Good As It Gets"? Helen Hunt is not a one time wonder. She was amazing. I do understand that it sucks that actors and actresses that get multiple nominations, but never win deserve to win; however, it always seems that a movie that they could win for another person gives such a powerhouse performance that really they couldn't win. Paltrow is a really good actress, she is, but yes for "Shakespeare in Love" over Blanchett's "Elizabeth", yeah, no.
1:21 Only one straight one standing on stage at this moment! Which one is it? Here's a clue: He was a legendary/fantastic Hollywood Acting Legend but only stars in really really shitty movies now... (p.s. No it's not Robert DeNiro but very close!!)
You know what's ironic. Sigourney Weaver was originally supposed to play Sarah Tobias in The Accused. I don't see anyone playing this role as well as Jodie. This was truly deserved. All the nominees were very much worthy, but Jodie deserved the win. I agree with selfpotatoify. This was back in the days when the Oscars actually meant something
This was back when the Oscars had stars, and people cared who won. These were all memorable movies -- Dangerous Liaisons, Working Girl, Rainman, Gorillas In the Mist -- and every one of these actors went on to become legendary stars. This must have been a tough call to make, but Jodie Foster deserved this award... even though she makes a terrible brunette! Melanie Griffith would have been my second choice.
@EidSeimmoc If you're implying Foster is patting herself on the back or being smug here, you've missed the point. She isn't doing that at all. And in fact, she's one of the celebrities who absolutely refuses to talk about her political views and wants to be known only for her acting. She's just making a smart comment that is related to the movie. So maybe you should stop being cynical.
Jodie Foster is a great actress, a true beauty and a class act! When she said "Cruelty might be very human, and it might be very cultural, but it's not acceptable," she hit the nail right on the head! Perhaps that might be a good homile for some people in our society to reflect on from time to time.
God, being an actor one would would assume that Dustin Hoffman could put some more "effort" into announcing the damn winner. Instead he sounds and looks like he'd rather be clipping his toenails at home with a can of beer next to him........
Perhaps the worst film to win a major Academy Award. This is basically a TV movie script, but with Jodie Foster in a theatrical release rather than Valerie Bertinelli on CBS.
@westnyacktwins The film didn't win, the great performance won. And really it's more commendable when you have an actor who is given "tv movie" material and has enough talent to elevate it with great acting. Most actors who win, the writing is so good, it does the work for them.
@westnyacktwins Well, Jodie's career fizzled in the mid-'80s, and her wins for "The Accused" and later "Silence Of The Lambs" basically put her back on the map. And by the way...she and now Natalie Portman have something in common: They're both Best Actress winners/Ivy League graduates (Foster from Yale, Portman from Harvard)!
Poor Sigourney Weaver. You can see the look of disappointment in her eyes. She had also been nominated earlier in the evening for "Working Girl" for Supporting Actress, but lost in an upset to Geena Davis in "The Accidental Tourist." Weaver was the first actress in history to be nominated in both lead and supporting, and lose twice. She would be joined later by Emma Thompson, Julianne Moore and Cate Blanchett.
I insist that the race was between Glenn and Jodie , Glenn did a great performance , espacially when Vicent has returned toget his night and she refused him , Jodie has done a Great Performance too , especially when she was telling her story in the court .
But I choose Jodie , She was better a little , But this fucking Glenn should Get an Oscar so soon
@cuteNADA1992 unknown? She's been famous all her life. This was her comeback though. And with The Silence of the Lambs she became one of the most powerful women in hollywood.
@cuteNADA1992 How was Jodie an unknown? She had an Oscar nomination under her belt before anyone knew who the other four were. I mean arguably Melanie was knocking out films the same time Jodie was but she didn't become a name actress until the 80's. I would never say that Jodie Foster wasn't good , she was one of the Greatest Actresses of all time , But Glenn Close espacially in this picture '' Dangerous Liaisons'' should've won ! It was just a very juicy role played well. Foster carried her film more and gave a brave and raw performance. The kind that the Academy can't ignore.
glenn was amazing as was Jodi....but this was the first chance for the Academt to show this kid of the industry their respect- she grew up in Hollywood and film, plus- after the whole Hinkley thing, the fact that she endured and survived that earned their respect....judging performances in apples and oranges- the final verdict rarely is about the performance itself- it's the times and timing, people and personalities.....
@aharz1 I was thinking exactly that - all of these nominees are so exceptionally talented and I'm not sure we have such talent, as you said, in this age group now.
Jodie's best performance was Sarah Tobias.Yes,better than Clarice, but she deserved both of them. One of my favourite movies is The Accused.Kelly McGillis was great too!
I think Sigourney Weaver was resigned to her fate here. Sigourney was a double nominee and that had to sting a little bit, I know it is an honor to be nominated but still has to sting to be a double nominee that night and come home empty handed.
@JamesE1974 yeah and she was the FIRST double nominee to go home empty handed. Most people thought her chances were in supporting because most double nominees win in that category. After Geena Davis won, she knew it was over.
@Tigerlily21 She was shooting "Ghostbusters 2" at the time and Bill Murray used to greet her with a "here comes the double-nominee". The day after the ceremony, Bill Murray obviously stayed silent, and Sigourney said in an interview she would have killed him had he dared say something about the double nod.
we tend to want the actor/actress to win from the movie we like best but the award is for that particular performance. It's not about the movie, but the performance..in this case, Oscar well deserved for Jodi
Sigourney was like "what the..", it doesn't matter because she knows she don't need an oscar to prove she's an outstanding actress, same for Glenn Close.
"Cruelty might be very human and it might be very cultural, but it's not acceptable" which is what this movie is about. I would like to see Jodie Foster portray a brilliant & a very unforgettable role in the movie again, that will win her an Oscar. It's been a while..
No matter who you think should have won, you gotta admit, this is one of those rare Oscar moments that the award can go to any ladies. It was that good of a performance from EVERY single one of them.
I absolutely agree that Glenn should have taken it for Fatal Attraction, but Jodie was the right choice for this Oscar !!

I think Sigourney Weaver was resigned to her fate here. Sigourney was a double nominee and that had to sting a little bit, I know it is an honor to be nominated but still has to sting to be a double nominee that night and come home empty handed.
JamesE1974 1 year ago
@JamesE1974 yeah and she was the FIRST double nominee to go home empty handed. Most people thought her chances were in supporting because most double nominees win in that category. After Geena Davis won, she knew it was over.
Tigerlily21 1 year ago
@Tigerlily21 She was shooting "Ghostbusters 2" at the time and Bill Murray used to greet her with a "here comes the double-nominee". The day after the ceremony, Bill Murray obviously stayed silent, and Sigourney said in an interview she would have killed him had he dared say something about the double nod.

we tend to want the actor/actress to win from the movie we like best but the award is for that particular performance. It's not about the movie, but the performance..in this case, Oscar well deserved for Jodi

I hate the academy for this... Glenn Close was the real winner...

jodie deserves an oscar for every single movie she does.

Glen Close deserved this so bad...she was stunning in that movie!!!!!!!

Sigourney was like "what the..", it doesn't matter because she knows she don't need an oscar to prove she's an outstanding actress, same for Glenn Close.

@kaiyno True but atleast an outstanding actress did win.

"Cruelty might be very human and it might be very cultural, but it's not acceptable" which is what this movie is about. I would like to see Jodie Foster portray a brilliant & a very unforgettable role in the movie again, that will win her an Oscar. It's been a while..

Glenn close was so much better that Jodie!!!!

No matter who you think should have won, you gotta admit, this is one of those rare Oscar moments that the award can go to any ladies. It was that good of a performance from EVERY single one of them.

I just saw "The Accused". I've to say that was one hell of a movie. It's really sad that this kind of crimes are still committed.

I can't believe that over-rated dyke has two oscars. Well, on second thought, I can because the Oscars are a farce!
