Another example of Don Cherry using a Bobby Orr highlight that occurred pre-Cherry. At 1:30 of this clip, Orr breaks away from Minnesota's #9, Charlie Burns. Burns last season in Minny was 72-73. Cherry didn't coach til 74-75. Yet, Cherry's been using that clip on his Coach's Corner intro for years. Orr played 705 games for Boston, with only the last 93 under Cherry. But for decades on HNIC, Cherry has tied himself to Orr's entire career. I guess he figures, "Bobby's okay with it."
Hey Bobby, why don't you tease all us fans and take your new titanium knee and come back and play a few games....remind us of what we got cheated out of because other players could only slow you down by going after your knees. At 60+ years of age I'd wager a weeks pay he's still 85% better than the players of today.
It can truthfully be said " Bobby Orr was the Larry Bird of Hockey!" Nobody could do all the things Bird could do with a basketball. Nobody else could do all the things Orr could do with a puck!
What fans need to consider is how 'average' Orr made the other Stars of the League look. He is out there playing against Hall of Famers Belliveau, Robinson, LaFleur, Hull, Howe, Park, Perreault, Ratelle, Clarke, etc etc etc. These guys were awesome players---yet so helpless chasing this Orr guy. He was that good.
If you did not get to see him, you really missed out.
i also saw Orr play, and there is no doubt in my mind that he was the greatest player of all time. on a good night he was faster then i could believe and his playmaking was just unreal. unbelievable player.
I'm gonna say this once. You had to see Bobby in his prime. And he did this on ONE KNEE! And his good knee wasnt that good at all. I was born in '55...I know Gretzky was great, so was Guy Lafleur, and Mario Lemieux...but please...if you didnt see Orr, you missed out. So help me God, you missed out. He was the greatest.
Yeah sure. Comparing Mike Bossy's scoring statistics - Mr steven9884? You must be joking! You forget that Bobby was a 'defenseman'. I studied all the great players from 1966 to present. As an all around player, Mike Bossy could hardly compare with the Great Bobby Orr.
Mario's the only one you could compare to him...and he'd lose. Orr was the greatest ever. Thank god for YouTube - you can still see how amazing that one-kneed bastid was.
@HughG16 Mario was one of the best.. but he wasn't winning the Norris trophy at the same time winning the Art Ross trophy . I don't think that will happen again..but Orr did it twice..

Mike Bossy was a better hockey player 8 consecutive 50+ goal season first rookie to score 50 played less games than orr scored more goals even though orr played 15 seasons and only managed 270 goals while bossy played 10 seasons scoring 573 regular season goals..Orr was great but never Mike bossy.lol
@steven9884 Bossy has some of the most impressive on ice statistics ever recorded (yah gogo 80's with tissue paper defense). His net effect statistics gf-ga and +/- actually are ahead of both Gretzky and Mario. However, the only player..a long way ahead of him..hmm who could it be. Oh, it is Mr. Orr..double Bossy's +/- and 25% higher gf-ga.
Intangibles...Bossy never blocked a shot, cleared the front of his net, stuck up for a team mate, fought (Lady Byng..shesh). And no end to end rushes!!
hands DOWN,, best player of all time,, Gretzky was the GREATES scorer of all time, but thats it,, he scored,,, he wasnt a defender,, couldnt fight,,, Bobby orr was the Jack of all trades, and he was the Best jack around,,, too bad boby didnt wear #1 cause it woulda fit him well
franco404......I'm so glad there are people like you that understand how great a player Bobby was.....I'll go even further.....700 goals? 1500 assists? What would he have done in today's NHL? Damn, hockey misses him!!

When you talk about who was the greatest player ever it comes down to Bobby and Mario.

@steven9884 your parents should have been steralized.
bobby orr was a DEFENSEMAN, smart guy. of course a forward would out-score him.
Watch their bio's....bossy trained to make the most of his opportunities because someone like bobby orr would've kicked his ass in front of the net.

Orr was the greatest just too bad he had so many injuries. I have one regret I was too young when he was at his best.

It's laughable how great Bobby was.....just fantastic!!!

If Orr had the technology of todays surgeries he would have played 10 more years..your looking at 500+ goals and 1200+ assists .Imagine

Not only was Orr the Greatest Hockey player ever.
I've watched my fair share of Football, Basketball, Baseball & Hockey;
IMHO, Orr was the most dominant single player in Any Team Sport, I ever saw.
And I grew up a Ranger fan, so this is not Boston bias.
Orr was simply "Spectacular"
jerseyrattler 2 years ago 5
jerseyrattler, you are so correct!!! The most dominant athlete there ever was, and ever will be..
