I'm french with Irish Originsand i like the Celtic Music until my Born, I loved also Loreena McKennitt but I prefer Joan OSBORNE in this interpretation. She is wonderful !
I see the arm of the self anointed Luke Kelly Inquisition team has reached this shore, stamping out the heresy that anyone could enjoy another artists rendition of this song over dear departed Luke's - God rest his soul. It is holy rite they'll be telling you.
this is the ultimate song... the ultimate jedi test to see if u can sing or not... Loreena Mckennit is top 3 best vocals, she can do this song acupella
For me this much much much better then the Sinead 's version....this one and the Luke Kelly's version are shurely the best that I've ever listen to...very different but both stunning
the problem cavness with playing the music we love at a family passing, is that it never sounds the same again as i did for the passing of my grandfarther r.i.p to both of them
I am fortunate enough toi have bought the album in Enniskillen some years ago. This track reaches deep inside me. Intensly haunting, soulful and stunningly beautiful. Paddy & Joan...take a bow!
I Have to agrree, luke Kelly is the one and only for this song! I read Patrick Kavanaghs poetry when I was a schoolkid, But all the versions I hit on youtube are sung with such passion, this version is better than Sineads!! Who singing this version?
Two weeks ago I heard a young lad, no more than eighteen or nineteen sing this in a pub in Manchester. While the lad had no great voice he sang with such passion that he silenced the crowd and let me tell you all, there were more than a few dewy eyed when he'd finished. I suppose the moral is it's not the version, it's the song and what it means to us all.
it's funny, every single version of this on youtube and everyone says that a different version is the best. well, we all have different opinions. i just have to say, i've listened to so many different versions, and this one is really really beautiful, i don't have anything bad to say about the others, either. :) thx for posting.
indeed. I am quite fond of mark knofler and with due respect to him, he is a kid compared to luke kelly when it comes to this song. so are all others. luke was a phenomenon.
A very good version and I have it on my I-pod, but I think I prefer Van Morrison. Perhaps it's because it was the first version I ever heard. Van really made me feel the longing and regret of a love lost, even the wrong love.
While this is a perfectly nice version of the song, it doesn't convey the grief and heartbreak of unrequited love in the way that Luke Kelly's version does. Luke meant every single word he sang and his voice went straight for the heart.
I would like to thank the person who shared this with me...this video is a splendid visual and example of an ancient country overflowing in nature's gifts in it's most generous state of giving. The vocal in this beautiful song is a haunting and melodically fine tuned version that should not be compared to another, but appreciated on its own merit.
Thenelaware, this is extraordinarily rich in both visual and music.
Magnificent music. This one, Luke's raw and masterly rendition, Mary Black's...no matter...all beautiful.(Wish someone could also post Sinead O'Connor's version on YouTube)
actualy , i dont think lukes version is one of those party songs our anything like that. he also approchs slowly and ''poeticaly'' with passion, useing the power he holds in his voice, he surpass's this version in everyway. This one is good too, but lukes is the best.
Sorry to upset Folks, but Luke Kellys version kicks this Eurovision friendly nonsense to bits. Check it out.Hes the real deal, this is the eqiuvalent of Celine Dion singing a Bob Dylan track.
This track is from the Chieftains album "Tears of Stone" which features all women line-up on the vocals ( icluding Bonnie Raitt and Joni Mitchell). Great stuff!

Absolutely charming.
Please advise - composer? Singer?
Ignore comparisons with other performers. Much as I admire Mr Kelly. This performer takes the music to heart and shares it beautifully.
