@freshageVI They are wrapped in steel belts it will take a bit for the fire to weaken the structural architecture of the tire. I guess at the same time the air inside is expanding and putting more pressure against it.

not been a mr know it all but the first marshal on the scence with the extinguisher didnt handle that very well in my opinion he sould have kept the powder at the base of the fire like the second marshal did on the scence and extinguished the fire alot better. ah well it was put out i guess and the rider walked away unharmed at least

What happened? Did the tank actually rupture or did the filler cap get smashed out (there's a bit of silver something bouncing down the track)?

The tank ruptured. It has been a major problem with the R6 since the new shape model came out a few years ago, because the tank can hit the ground very easily during a crash. It has happened a lot of times I know of in the various levels of UK racing. You can now get protectors specifically for the R6 tank to stop it happening.

Fabietto... il problema è che quelle moto hanno solo linee e colori uguali a quelle da strada.. e poi devono rispettare le geometrie del motore originale... ma per il resto non c'è nulla che si possa comprare di una moto del mondiale superbike... uno perchè non sono componenti in vendita.. e se trovi qualche cosa da ex mondiale.. rischi di pagare solo le forcelle, il doppio del valore della moto originale ;)

Thats definatly an R6. Stubby side exhaust, central ram intake, high swingarm, thin tail etc. If you still don't believe me, read back through the past comments. Besides, R6s have a habit of catching fire :p

the 06-07 R6s do.  For 08 they fixed the tank problem. Guy should have had a tank gaurd on it and it might not have happened.

And ya it's definitely an R6. At the beginning of the video you can pause it and see the side profile. Definitely yamaha

it looks like the cap comes off when the bike tumbles. look closely at about 2 three seconds. theres a small object tumbling away from the bike.

nope, the cap is definitely still on there. R6s are known for this, which is why most racing organizations now require tank gaurds.

While it's flipping you can still see the silver cap on there. Trust me, they tighten them down pretty good. Never seen one come off in a crash and I've seen lots of crashes, both club racing and pro

I'm a pit marshall in Estoril, for almost 15 years, and this is the most dangerous part to do in a situation of racing. I know the red flag was show to stop the race, the bike was in a bad position, especially it was on fire. We only go to intervention on the track, only when the safety conditions are secured, and when only the guys on the tower says, it's ok to go until then, we have to wait for further instructions, to take the bike out of there!
