@878commando All great bands. I've actually always had a thing about lumping Voivod in with Hawkwind and Chrome. All very sci-fi, visionary and unique. You couldn't ever accuse Voivod of not doing things their own way.
@sex6cult9revolution Absolutely, I love Hawkwind as well, and Tool, Amebix, Swans, all very unique. I know of Chrome but never given them a proper listen, so I will get round to that soon.
Such an underrated album! I don't consider this a "sell out" at all, it reminds me of 80s Rush only darker and more atmospheric and eerie. Definitely not some watered down radio rock like some people think!
First live band I ever experienced. These guys blew my mind away; they're the only group to really cause me to rethink my intellectual approach to music and I was stunned at their range of abilities to transition into different tempos, even live. The very dynamic VoiVod.
Produced by Terry Brown, who produced Rush up to Signals. Cool song. The Outer Limits is my favorite CD from VoiVod. Saw live in 94 at small club near Long Beach. They were great. Played entire version of Jack Luminous.
I hated this album after "Nothingface" but its actually the most perfect and complete album they ever did..... Its enduring and one that always finds a place in my car stereo
There is no band in the world that evolved so much like Voivod.. Whatever they did, i admire the artistic freedom they displayed.. Respect for this band, my favorite band of all times..
Why would someone say shit about voivod because of angel rat and outer limits?
You already have one of the best thrash metal records ever done by voivod, and the rest are not thrash masterpieces, but they are metal and generally, musical masterpieces.
I wouldnt like Voivod as much as i do if instead of W&P, RRROOOAAARRR, Killing Technology , Dimension Hatross, Nothingface, Angelrat, The Outer Limits, Negatron and Phobos they had released 12 killing techonology lol
you gotta love Voivod, 12 studio albums and even though they changed their sound 10 times over the years, I like every period of Voivod and I'm usually the "they changed their sound and suck now guy" about most bands. Piggy shreds
@stoneyburned Baby don't be like this, I thought we had something special. Those nights where we'd lube each other up, throw on some Voivod and diddle each other till the morning sun shown through the windows.

Yeah in order to appreciate Voivod, you really have to consider their whole discography (which I understand the itunes generation probably can't do anymore). When you listen to one or two quirky songs from them, it's almost out of context. Seriously take a Saturday off, lock yourself in a dark basement with a blacklight and listen to every Voivod album cranked starting with Roaaaaaarrrr. You can always try to get laid again next weekend...
@dripgoss Why not start with war and pain? Lol at the last sentence. I've never even attempted to get laid before, maybe I will eventually but at the moment I'm just too mentally fucked up to do so, or even care to do so.
Assburgers makes one like that I suppose. Until then, Voivod is my sex. Well, and my tenga flip hole, which feels at least 10 times better then using my hand, I can barely last a minute with it.
Simply brilliant. As a distant and rare sound after a battle. Almost melancholic too. It is sad that there s no videos regarding to this stage of Voivod. One of my favourites band. Thanks for posting.
Great music; well before it's time. I prefer 'Nothingface' over this album, but this one at least had Jean-Yves Thériault on bass, which I thought was a no-brainer. I never quite understood his departure from the band afterward ~ his bass tone was awesome. RIP Piggy!
Voivod fans I know liked this. Personally, I like all the albums, but I do see their career as going up and down. War and Pain was great, but their thrash stuff only got better, IMO, right up thru Dimension Hatross. Nothingface & Angel Rat were sort of the peak, N-face being still on the thrash side, but getting more lyrical & AR being the start of the descent, being stripped of thrash, but still energetic. @sex6cult9revolution I love voivod and the majority of their catalogue but war and pain is utter dog shit and they probably would admit it. Just thinking about how bad it is makes me cringe. It's the one disc that never gets played......I only keep it for historical significance. It's insane how such a great band was moulded out of that sorry excuse for career suicide.
@foolisharrangement dude I noticed on your site you have the smiths listed as favorites of yours with all that gayness I can't trust your opinion. This is not such a great Voi Vod album it's ok.It was too rhythmic for a Voi Vod album for most fan's;we liked the ugly off time signature's and ghastly chord progression's of the earlier day's.
@blitzspeer You just don't get this album. Voivod progressed with every release, whether it was in the same vein as their last album or a completely new style. Every album Voivod has released has been a masterpiece, including this one. If you don't like this album you probably don't get it and you definitely do not get Voivod.
i honestly cant decide if this album was a turn for the better for voivod, or if it was just a step down from nothingface. i do like most of the songs on angel rat, though
I definitely have come to respect and love this album. It was such a culture shock to hear Voivod play music I would've never associated with Voivod but that actually made it that much better. Voivod truly are one of a kind.
gladly they got out of that 80's raw hardcore thrash metal shit and became one of the most original rock bands out there from Killing Technology forward
yeah I agreed man I think the problems I have with the new albums is that it feels more hard rockish and it's not as technical nor as progressive. Just feel that they should be talked back into their roots a little more, you know.
Given their first two albums were admittedly generic and raw, Killing Tech and Dimension Hatross are incredibly unique thrash albums. Don't knock what you're not open-minded enough to enjoy.
this record took the old fanbase by complete surprise. compared to war and pain, rrrrooooaaaarrr!, killing technology, and dimension hatross and nothingface, angel rat is really a straightforward rock record with just a hint of the angular attack of their older material mixed in. they went out on a limb for this and thankfully their fans stuck with them. r.i.p. piggy and long live the iron gang!
i have to admit, after Nothingface, I really hated Angel Rat when I first heard it. it wasn't until just a few years ago that I went back and gave it a fair shake, and was surprised to find out how great it really was. I wish I had given it a chance back then, hating that album was what kept me from seeing them live that year, which unfortunately was one of the very rare times they came anywhere near where I live. I'll never forgive myself for that.
such foolish ignorance. Typical 15 year old kid thinking bands can just survive without progressing beyond the cave man three chord trash riffs. This album is brilliant, every single song on angel rat is like a journey through the universe. You people that critisise this album are just sheep that ahve heard from someone else that the album sucks so you jump on the bandwagon without even giving the album a fair listen.
I agree that Angel Rat was a beautiful album, integrating the 70s prog and psychedelic influences that Piggy was so fond of. This band made excellent thrash/black metal albums but moved on to such inventive music that may not be totally understood even 20 years later. Angel Rat and Outer Limits were full of technical space rocking breakthrough tunes... of course the Syd Barrett influence shines through too which is brilliant!!
I agree. I love War and Pain, Dimension Hatross, and Killing Technology as much as the other Voivod fans.
I also love Angel Rat and Nothingface! They represent movement forward in the genre just like Death (RIP, Chuck you were the real pioneer), Meshuggah, and Gorguts have done in newer releases. I shudder to think what metal would be if bands didn't progress musically and lyrically.
Besides I love progressive rock and metal. As well as jazz, classical, punk, avant garde music. I don't discriminate by label and keep an open mind. I like/hate a lot of albums people would violently disagree with. Point of all that: Just really don't like this album. Not bad, but doesn't do much for me. I like The Outer Limits a lot more!
They just made a break from Korgull's concept for a few albums... I can assure that this song live is as powerfull as the thrash ones. Check the video an an club in greece. What an amazing band, so underrated.
I was really disapointed by this album especially after Dimension Hatros and Nothingfce! My best album is Dimension Hatros... I believe that they completely lose their focus when they did this album. As a proof, Blacky left the band immediately after and Snake follow up after the next album.
The odd thing about VoiVod is that I've almost never liked any of their albums the first listen. Since their albums frequently differ, it took me a few listens to get into the album. After that, I love 'em. Even though this album is a large departure from most of the other stuff, I can still hear Voivod in it, Piggy's guitar and unique style. IMO, it shows off the progressive part of their style.
yeah I know what you mean dude....at first bands like voivod, watchtower, and cynic kind of went over my head. But over time have become my most cherished albums.
Well they really didn't have a choice for the direction they took for this album. There label MCA Records at the time were forcing them to take a turn around. Hence, why Blacky left the band. Other than that I thought this was a fantastic album because it stands on its own. More importantly this is my favorite song. I only wish that they made a vid for this one.
Oh really, so getting Terry Brown to produce the album was a compromise for the band and Blacky didnt leave the band because he wanted to make techno. Don't dismiss this album as a record labels desire to sell more units, if fans dont appreciate this album fuck em!
Blacky wanting to make Techno was part of the reason. The other reason was he didn't like the producer and what he was asking from the band and the fact that known listen to him on his ideas.
It didn't have that rawness, agreed, but it does stand on it's own as a good album. Just not what you had come to expect from Voivod up to that point.
It's not my favorite Voivod album but if I could take out my bias for the previous efforts, it's good.
For the record I like Dimension Hatross best overall, but love just about every album they've done. Just depends on my mood which I want to hear at the moment.
I didnt used to like this album back in the days (92-93), cos I was always comparing it with the Voivods old material. Then a friend gave me this CD a few years later, and I started to appreciate it more. Today I think its an awesome album, and specially if I compare with the shit that has been played today by other bands, I think its a must have in every heavy metal fans CDs collection!
Osti que c'était bon!!!! J'ai perdu ma cassette il y a quelques années, probablement oublié a un party bien arrosé!!! J'ai eu la chance de connaitre ces gars-la en faisant leur premiere partie 2 fois!!
I have such great memories of this song and album. Back in high school my friends and I used to play this when we went on beer runs, then come back and party listening to it at extremely high volumes.
me too, its funny you mention that because if there is any song in this world that can take me back to my really young youth like a time machine where it feels for a moment that I am actually there its this song
So what if this album is not as heavy as their earlier stuff! It still has the signature Voivod sound, musically and vocally, and the ghost ship imagery that this song conjures up gives me chills every time I hear it.
Listening to this has given me the goosebumps it did years ago.Back in the day i was a thrash/death metal fan but still rated Angel Rat and Nothingface amongst my fave albums.
From "killing technology" through to "Angel Rat" VoiVod were one of the most interesting bands around, truly progressive and never dull. I love this song and the "Angel Rat" album..but my favourite is "dimension hatross"..
Great Band, it's a way of life, it's like The Power of Myth of Joseph Campbell: We don't know why but they play the music that is inside of us!

I was really disapointed by this album especially after Dimension Hatros and Nothingfce! My best album is Dimension Hatros... I believe that they completely lose their focus when they did this album. As a proof, Blacky left the band immediately after and Snake follow up after the next album.
GlobalWarining09 2 years ago
The odd thing about VoiVod is that I've almost never liked any of their albums the first listen. Since their albums frequently differ, it took me a few listens to get into the album. After that, I love 'em. Even though this album is a large departure from most of the other stuff, I can still hear Voivod in it, Piggy's guitar and unique style. IMO, it shows off the progressive part of their style.
Oh yeah. Voivod is my favorite band...

yeah I know what you mean dude....at first bands like voivod, watchtower, and cynic kind of went over my head. But over time have become my most cherished albums.

One of my favorit voivod songs The new album
"infini" ROCKS!!!
poonartastic288 2 years ago
Well they really didn't have a choice for the direction they took for this album. There label MCA Records at the time were forcing them to take a turn around. Hence, why Blacky left the band. Other than that I thought this was a fantastic album because it stands on its own. More importantly this is my favorite song. I only wish that they made a vid for this one.
Theshark15z 2 years ago
Oh really, so getting Terry Brown to produce the album was a compromise for the band and Blacky didnt leave the band because he wanted to make techno. Don't dismiss this album as a record labels desire to sell more units, if fans dont appreciate this album fuck em!
willisingo 2 years ago
Blacky wanting to make Techno was part of the reason. The other reason was he didn't like the producer and what he was asking from the band and the fact that known listen to him on his ideas.

This album had some good spots it was below average..imho. It didn't have the rawness and grit of what Voivod pioneered.
rb7magnetico 2 years ago

I like the sound in this song too exellent post
mitchell1919 3 years ago
So what if this album is not as heavy as their earlier stuff! It still has the signature Voivod sound, musically and vocally, and the ghost ship imagery that this song conjures up gives me chills every time I hear it.

Haha, goosebumps me too. Awesome.
mool1965 3 years ago
Listening to this has given me the goosebumps it did years ago.Back in the day i was a thrash/death metal fan but still rated Angel Rat and Nothingface amongst my fave albums.
olimantra 3 years ago
Sounds like me! I was (and still am) an old school metal fan but have loved every Voivod album as well, especially the two you mentioned.

From "killing technology" through to "Angel Rat" VoiVod were one of the most interesting bands around, truly progressive and never dull. I love this song and the "Angel Rat" album..but my favourite is "dimension hatross"..
