The solar cells you could put on a Toyota Prius for example would give you enough charge on a sunny day to travel 5 to 8 miles. Not exactly perfect for long trips, but a bio-diesel/steam hybrid electric generator coupled with electric drive car, with plug-in for commuting would be great.

As I drive around the City of Albuquerque, I always wonder how much is spent on freeway lighting. I realize that they are there for diver safety, however, as traffic slows to a trickle, say after midnight, why not turn off alternate street lights? I respect Richardson alot. He was a great diplomat, and any diplomat that can help give us peace with another country has one thumb up. He hasn't talked about limiting the power of the federal government and giving it back to the states. As I drive around the City of Albuquerque, I always wonder how much is spent on freeway lighting. I realize that they are there for diver safety, however, as traffic slows to a trickle, say after midnight, why not turn off alternate street lights? This would not only conserve energy, extend the useful life of street lamps and probably save millions of taxpayer dollars each year. If this were done all over the country, think of the savings!

I believe we all need to conserve & pollute less. Still it bothers me when I hear people who are rich and/or powerful telling us that we citizens need to sacrifice. What is their sacrifice? Energy efficient bulbs in their mansions? Traveling to Europe only 5 times a year, not 6? Taking a tiny portion of their wealth & having trees planted to offset their huge carbon footprint? It's hard to hear people ask you to sacrifice when they are so well off that they'll never feel it!

This is so easy. Devices can run on either 12 or 24 Volts, or natural fuel. That's right, air conditioners and refrigerators included! Every camper or boater knows that. Solar or wind produce 12 or 24 V. The problem is the grid. More energy is consumed converting from high voltage A.C.thru inefficent transformers inside your radio, TV or computer to wind up at 3.3, 5, 12 or 24 V.D.C. Do you get it now? Get off the grid! Hey Bill, how about something we know that works.. like nuclear power? It doesn't emit CO2 (like Coal), It doesn't emit massive amounts of radiation (like Coal). It requires a relatively small footprint (unlike solar). It's dependable (unlike wind and solar) and when you look at it's only incident of any consequence, Three Mile Island, it only released 1.3 millirams of radiation (nothing when you consider ambient radiation in the US is 300 mlrms). I say we have a winner here!

I respect Richardson alot. He was a great diplomat, and any diplomat that can help give us peace with another country has one thumb up. He hasn't talked about limiting the power of the federal government and giving it back to the states. All you have to do to save energy is bite your lip! If you live without/low heat/air conditioning, your body will adjust. I've had some LOW energy bills due to my strong will.
That, and never turning on my lights! It's a great way to improve your memory and dexterity by learning where everything is at rather than having to see everything all the time. Your television or computer screen emits enough light to show you where everything is at.

Actually you have a point there. If you wanted to go one further you can also purchase some solar panels or even open up two doors at two ends of your house to let the breeze through during the summer time if you're hot. You'd be surprised how much things cool down with natural circulating air.

I live in rural Maine and my wife laughs at me whenever I lock my car and take my keys inside with me, which isn't abnormal if you're from Philly like I am.
Yes, windows can be opened, one on each side of the house, you'll get a nice breeze through, but then what else are screen doors for but so you can leave the heavy door open without letting the flies in.
