@vancanman2 dear roberto luongo: u r from canada. there are at least 5 or 6 versions of it that mix both english & french, just english and several with various combos of french. its the greatest anthem anywhere. much better than our boring star spangled banner. god bless america is just a notch below o canada.one of the best o canada is done in our united center by jim cornilsen who has a booming voice and has become famous. he once did it in french . ck it out. o canada is the greatest.
@emrrbv You sent your message to the wrong person. Still, this 'version' of O Canada was certainly interesting. Where did he find these lyrics (in both languages), or did he make them up himself?
@vancanman2 um, i thot i sent it to the guy fr vancouver. in any event, he didnt make up the lyrics. best bet to start with is simply type o canada under wikipedia & it'll give u enuf diff versions of it to make u dizzy. it confuses me and i know both the english &&& (mainstream) french versions of it & i wont go to a blackhawks game w/my friends unless it is vs. a canadian team. we also have to get there at least 1/2 hr b4 the game to ensure breathing room b4 the anthem. drives them nuts.
@bowler2383 dear bowling ball: r u insane? the u/c is a tremendous bldg. in the old chgo stadium u could die of smoke inhalation between periods in lobby. not to mention shitty washrooms, horrible sight lines, a 1970s scoreboard which had to replace the horse manure 1940s scoreboard & o yes, i forgot to mention the 6 flights of stairs u had to walk up to the top balcony. m.jordan once said that no seat was a bad seat in the stadium. really mike, did u ever sit for 3 hrs with a post in your face?
@bowler2383 dear johnny petraglia part 2: please tell me y the united center can kiss your ass?? what is wrong with it?? do u really hate escalators, elevators, great sight lines, state-of-the-art scoreboards, clean washrooms and excellent concession stands?? i mean, what the hell more do u want??? how many times have u been there?? its just a great building. great for concerts, hockey basektball,circus----u name it. i would have gladly swung the wrecking ball that demolished chgo stadium.
Wayne Messmer is a class act This vid is from 1983 and he always did BOTH anthems justice, kids! The late owner of the Hawks, Bill Wirtz fired him after he became a part owner of the Chicago Wolves, an AHL team.
Why is it they always have to butcher our poor country's anthem by getting some opera singer to sing it??? Come on Canada are we really too cheap to hire an actual celebrity????
What a wonderful rendition! You francophone elitists are never satisfied. Besides Haitians and you francophones in Quebec, who would know the difference. No one.
According to a record cover from Reinhard Popp's collection, the bilingual version sung here was written by the (female) author Jo Ouellet and the baritone Rex Le Lacheur. The latter has also recorded this version.
Wow he fucked that up so badly! It's so painful to listen to. Might as well change the lyrics to: "O Canata! Our habitat where we live!" .... o.o Oh dear lord.
Still want a team in Quebec okpapereat? Why so you can critique the naitional anthem more than the game? Yes, he is an American and si9ngs better than any Canadian that I ever heard.
scandaleux! Give me a break you Canadian francophone elitist. No one was listening to the franch words anyway. Besides Haitians, who knows french? No one! Scandaleux! Sure. Wayne Messmer still sounds better. Maybe the next time the Nordiques er Canadiens com here, we will just omit the Canadian National Anthem.
he must be american you don't see him screw up on the american one but anyways i want quebec nordiques back if butman dont give quebec the team i would be pissed as hell not that im from the quebec region but i still want a team in quebec again
I think all hockey arenas should have a pipe organ. The pipe organ is what made the national anthems great to listen to. What they got now is garbage. It is just the person singing with no music playing with them. Just the singing voices makes the anthem seem dull and lifeless.
Wayne Messmer was a great singer, but he really blew it with these lyrics. It reminded me of "Naked Gun" when, ahem, "Enrico Palazzo" sang the Star Spangled Banner. How could he have mangled it so badly???!!!
Although Wayne Messmer may not have sung the right words for O'Canada, a few years ago he almost didn't get to even live, much less sing again. He was shot in the throat after being mugged and robbed by a teenaged robber and was left for dead in 1994. However, with a few months of therapy, Messmer, who is also the Chicago Cubs public address announcer, returned to singing.
How could he botch this anthem? Didn't anyone give him the official words to our anthem, or did "coolquebec" hit it on the nose saying he translated from French and got it messed up?
O Canada was an anthem composed by the French Canadian for St-John-the-Baptist day. The English version is not even a translation because O Canada in French celebrate the French Canadian race.
If you do not like it, you can always sing "Maple Leaf Forever" instead of writing foolish remarks revealing your ignorance of basic Canadian history.
I think this was a neat idea. Though I wonder what would happen if we did alternate English/Spanish lyrics for the Star Spangled Banner, as the USA has no federal official language...
im not so sure about south american (USA) story but did the spanish people got conquered (not the mayas but the spanish coloneers) by the english ones?
well its the fact in canada, and thats why we want our own country.
The United States began an aggressive age of expansion after it was founded, with the goal of stretching from one ocean to the other. The US conquered/bought territory from Mexico and the native Spanish speakers, kicking them out of integrating them. So, it could be a similar situation.
oh and btw to all the people that used to say that France lost all their wars, in that expanding time you said, well americans tried to invade Canada (Quebec part) well my city was named after the guy who stoped your army, a french Colonel which was a really young Colonel.
I always remember O Canada being sung strictly in French at the Chicago Stadium when the Nordiques were visiting, and starting in French, finishing in English when Montreal was the visting team. This was very early Wayne Messmer who of course now performs the Anthem at the Chicago Wolves games. Nice clip ChgoHawks!
This is not the Canadian Anthem in either French or English.
A rather insulting attempt to accommodate the Québec City's Nordique by translating O Canada back in French!? He could have asked for the real words...
O Canada was written in French first to celebrate French Canadians Nationalism before Canada even existed as a Country. The English version was later adopted by English Canadians and translated.
I agree, he could've asked for the correct words. If they wanted to switch, I would not mind them singing the second verse of l'anthem national de Canada, as I think it is beautiful, but not this version!
With its neo-Lenninist censorship of traditional Anglo-American freedoms of speech, religion and the press, Canada should no longer be treated as a civilized nation.
As a freedom loving American, I believe Canadian teams and other forms of Canadian commerce should be banned or seriously harassed in the USA, since Canada has begun to abrogate freedom of speech and freedom of the press.
The canadian national anthem was writen in 1880 by a Quebecer for the Quebec's national holiday..La St-Jean Baptist, 24th of June. Amazing how this song writen for Quebec became CANADA'S song... pas pire eh....On est hot en Cr*(&?t
Are you sure you're Canadian? Anyone in Canada would know there are French speaking people all over Canada, not just Quebec, you retard. And we have the right to have the national anthem in our language as well. Geez...
Ouch! Those are not the words, neither in French or English. The real french words: Ô Canada!
i think this is a heckuva rendition by w.messmer on o canada even tho it has a little bit o' this & a little bit o' that mixed in-- french, english, unusual lyrics, etc. but the greatest canadian anthem i ever heard was in dec '07 at the u.c. when this guy with the most booming voice actually outdid patrick blackwell---which i thought was impossible. poss my favoite song of all time. reminds me of when i was 12-13 and thought about channel 9 hockey, lloyd pettit & nothing else. great memories.

O Canada! Our home, notre pays!
La feuille d'érable: One flag from sea to sea.
Sol de liberté, sol d'égalité,
Where freedom's banner flies.
Chantons tous la gloire d'une riche histoire,
Our home 'neath northern skies.
O Canada! O ma patrie!
Hold high the Maple leaf o'er land and sea.
O Canada, my country, mon pays.
