I learned this song too when I was younger and I have to say your interpretation is not bad. Probably better than I would have played it back in the day. However, if you watch Mike playing it you can definitely see how much more intricately and fluidly he plays it.

The meter and time of this song disguises it's complexity. so much so that guys like us tend to overuse the bass pedal as you did (and I also back when I tried it). Just makes it easier to keep the time.
