  • Sliced bread was first sold in 1928 :)

  • he swims against the current.

  • Preach to the converted..

  • Ha.Try talking to a Cedric follower,It's a fascist and one sided culture that they created. The death of Rock and Roll. These guys brain washed and gave birth to a nation of nazi hipsters.

  • i really don't understand why people are bitching at mainstream for being what it is. It is there for a reason, because people are sheep and will eat whatever is fed to them. You think music today sucks? back the fuck up and think again, there is TONS of amazing music being played out there in this crazy world of ours, ten times as much as there was ever before in history. Wise up before you make an ignorant statement like that. Math rock, chiptune, whatever you like there is something for you.

  • At least nowadays kids in middle america have the internet. To everyone who's saying how much worse the music scene has gotten since the 90s, you don't know what you are talking about. At the Drive-in was getting mainstream radio play towards the end of their career in 2001, and are heralded as home-town heroes in El Paso. They and other indie successes are what's driving the music scene today. We have more choice than ever before in history thanks to music like this.

  • @Dinosourceful thank you for calling it like it is, holy shit. So sick of the nostalgic baby boomers "oh they don't make music like they used to", yea your right, its BETTER now, you just have to look somewhere other than your radio. And as far as choice, being a musician in general has skyrocketed, everyone and their mom is in a band. More choice now than there has ever been in history, and easier access to it.

  • That dumber wigg...i'm taught to be an asshole, get my hands dirty ,and wear a wig..fake as hell.I'm just preaching to the converted. These guys do not like anything different. There really isn't a choice.Cedric is just a sponge.Cedric is not a cool guy.He is the biggest asshole with dark circles around eyes.He hides behind Omar.I just bought a CD of there's and it sucks.I'm sure they will find a way to hide this insult me but they will always do well.Thanx

  • @bigbadbroman his lyrics are geewd, deewd

  • lol they probably dont even give a shit about that stuff anymore. theyve been heard now theyre just like the rest.

  • Now this should be on heavy rotation!

  • Stupid ass cedric, quit trying to help humans out. By trying to help them out, you're a commoner.

  • Cedric's a cool guy. It's scary how everything he said was true, only now it's still true only worse to how it was then.

  • ...in the yeear twooo thousaaaand. in the yeeeear twooo thoooousaaaaaaaaand.

  • Talking deeply about music without being hipster

  • Cedric ALWAYS talks about TV lol!

  • no one seeks to be different...they just are

  • music industry doesnt bother me, I find great new artists daily, the people who listen to the radio and like pop dont bother me so I leave them.....

  • theyr lyrics are hard to decode tho,

how did they expect "middle america" to be interested?

subject matter is pretty obscure, theres no way to b into this type of music unless u look for it...TRUST

  • Personally. People who complain about the music industry can suck my dick. Yeah radio sucks. But its not all the music thats fucking out their. We have the internet for fucksake. This is the greatest tool for finding music in the world. So stop bitching and hit up your interwebs, or go down to your local bar to find some good music.

    -end rant

  • What the fuck is Gucci Mane. If it's something those kids that listen to BrokenCyde and Blood On The Dancefloor like then no thanks. Those are the worst bands I've ever heard, there's plenty of good music out there and it's like people are looking for bands that others will hate so that they can consider themselves to be "different".

  • i dont know what gucci mane means but....doesnt sound cool ha!

  • i love at the drive-in and i love gucci mane, and skramz and brokencyde

  • @YouthClash nobody gives a fuck, stop talking.

i can't stand the fucking comments on this video, on either side. you're all sheep thinking you're part of some "scene" or are better than people who like hip-hop or pop music.

there is a lot of great talent in punk, in dubstep, in rock, in pop. search for it, like cedric recommends, before you go and say stupid shit like "i can't believe people like listening to computer generated beats". there's more electronic music than the shit on tv

  • @Claan22 YOU'RE A ROBOT! YOU'RE A SHEEP! BAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!

  • @aenima98 xD

  • I wish he just would have called out umm... I forgot their name. "I took her out it was a Friday night we walked alone..." Blink 182 thats it. Them and other "punk" bands that spawned at this time almost ruined music.

  • at the drive-in and refused are my favorite post hardcore bands

  • que chiquito que estaba cedric aca..era lindo ehhh

  • Nothing new under the sun? I'm getting sadder with age.

  • makes sense, people should really discover there own music.

once i started expanding and listening to different genres. not only did i learn more about myself, i learned more about more opinons about the world around me. i really encourage my friends to listen to different music than to just stick to one type of genre.

  • Mmm Cedric.

  • He just bands in there place with that!.

    Backing you up Cedric! :)

  • it's pretty interesting, what is said at the 3:00 mark. Nirvana pretty much said the same thing 10 years prior in regards to going from the underground to the mainstream. Back then it was feted at hair metal bands. in 2000, it would have been, well, you know, nu metal and shitty radio rock...another 10 years have pass an nothing has changed, unfortunately.

  • That man is incredibly smart for a highschool dropout.

  • I love you cedric!

  • you speak the truth and i love you for it. thanks :)

  • Katy Perry should really give this a look

  • Well, 11 years later and nothing changed, if anything it got worse. It kind of sucks that the genre that they're "promoting" is now the biggest group of sheep ever concieved. I mean, even hiphoppers now know better what music should sound like then most people who say they listen to punk music. Goddamnit...

  • jeje the tatoo looks kinda cool

  • What's sad is things have gotten so much worse since this interview...

  • @LmaoLaneyLee true, at least around this time there was the garage rock revival which was picking up some promising speed, but sadly that was dispelled by a new wave of commercialist masturbation. its like we're living in the 80's again, minus some of the cool new wave bands it was nothing but pop. i dont agree that that music should be hated on, but the fact that it is all sold based on image, and it all follows the same shallow croud pleasing formula, makes me desperately want a change to come

  • @crazyloverboy0808 Mm, well not all music these days is hopeless. The indie scene is definitely picking up. The only downside is it comes with a subculture of pretentious hipster kids. But, that's okay, because I think that any sort of subculture that "rebels" against the norm entails pretentious kids. Honestly, I think there's bad music in every decades. Pop and shit hip hop reeks, but meh, just pick up an instrument and prove to the world why it sucks.

  • Comment removed

  • @LmaoLaneyLee I honestly wouldn't have believed my eyes/ears if someone had shown me the future of what was going to become today's mainstream if I had been old enough 12-15 years ago. The capitalist machine leaves nothing out. Everything must become commercialized for as heavy a profit as possible, pretty fucking disgusting.

  • @LmaoLaneyLee so much worse

  • Mediated art is thrash. To be consumed and regurgitated frequently.

  • id like to hear what he has to say now. the radio today isnt even music. its just people using garage band on mac and making gay beats then putting some stupid keyboard lick in it.

  • what year was this interview?

  • @zeppelinstrat 2:16 year 2000 :-)

  • Nobody at my school wants to be a punk kid.

They all want to be fucking Gucci Mane, it makes me sick.

  • @panteraman32 Don't limit yourself to labels...it sounds cheesy, but just be yourself.

  • @panteraman32 i want to be gucci punk. i love both for very different reasons. i wish ppl could appreciate both. or learn to respect both in there own entity

  • @panteraman32 I think Cedric's a perfect role model for anyone.

  • @panteraman32 what the fuck is a gucci mane?

  • @panteraman32 become a punk rock gucci mane!

  • @panteraman32 too bad they dont wanna be them selves and not conform to any label...punk...hip hop...etc.

  • @panteraman32 BURRRRR BITCH!!

  • @panteraman32 No1 @ My School Tryna B GUCCi.

Dey All Tryna Cracka Ass Punk Bitchez. Makes Me Wanna Drive-By. Lls.

  • @panteraman32 dude i know how u feel man that shit is sooooooooooooooooooo sad!

  • @panteraman32 are you 14? because it gets better.

  • @panteraman32 They don't have to want to be "punk kids". They just have to learn to think and choose for themselves. If someone is going to listen to music at all then they need to show respect for it and that they care for it's true and natural purpose; as one of many tools to be used for the creation of art or self expression. There is something very wrong about music that is created for shallow entertainment purposes as an avenue to just make money or to build fame.

  • skinny jeans should be rocketed to the sun

  • its sexist in a different way.. not in the rap video way. every emo song is about how some woman is bitch or slut that broke their heart , every song is in the prespective of guy being innocent while the chick is a villain.

  • @sonobecube That's because emo is shit. simple as. Why is it even classed as a genre nowadays? it turns my stomach..

  • @sonobecube and women sing about men who break their hearts while they act all pretty and innocent, so are they sexist? no, it's self expression, get over it or gtfo.

  • I want to have Cedric's babies.

  • the music scene is worse now then it was during the late 90's/ early 00's . Emo is more sexist than most Nu metal bands. Limp Bizkit and Kid Rock were the most sexist. Limp Bizkit had a creative guitarist WeS Borland and cool instrumental music it was was definitely Fred Durst who dumbed that band down to the retarded level and as for Kid Rock , that band totally sucked.

  • @sonobecube wait... emo is sexist? i thought emo was like slit my writs and bite my eyes crap.. not where my hoes at.

  • muder city devils! thumbs up if you like pretty girls make graves!

  • i think cedric is out of the closet to omar. i mean have you watched that live Roulette Dares clip. omg

  • @magicbag6790 wow, come on guys... joke anyone?

  • god he is so right

  • Cedric has the iTunes 'Genious' logo tattooe'd on his elbow. What a sellout.

  • @moyno85 You mean Genius? Not "genious."

and yes. Cedric is a genius.

    glad we can agree

  • @moyno85 i think the year 2000 or "99 was before i pods existed

  • @moyno85 wasn't this interview before the itunes genius thing came out -.- it looks like an atom

  • @moyno85 how old are you?

  • He's right, people do need to get over themselves. Just because you found a band that no one else has heard of doesn't mean you're cooler than anyone else, it means you had more free time. Just chill out, stop trying to be better then everyone else, and just listen to the music.

  • the mars volta, at the drive-in, easily one of many fav. bands i have,

but come on, no one who represents complete freedom in music during his time, WTF, NEUROSIS

  • @addacodea yeah but neurosis, isis, all those types of bands are super underground unfortunately. metal, progressive and ambient, is so exclusive, even more than "underground" hip hop/rap i think. theyre great and i think more ppl should listen to them but i think its just logical that few ppl gravitate to it. most ppl dont because they dont like it, just like most average ppl dont like the mars volta. but i think hes referring to mainstream, especially hardcore and punk music thats dying.

  • This interview took place during nu-metals peek

I'm pretty sure that's what Cedric is talking about

  • that's fucking inspirational

  • @kaitywhite agreed.

  • i was thinking which is hard for me,i have never said ''furthermore'' in a debate.i wonder how it feels.i consider emo a fraction of hardcore punk.Mallpunks have highjacked a despriptive term to sell to their parents for makeup money...furthermore

  • fuck limp bizkit.

  • @ixJELLOxi lol

  • sad to say.

what he is speaking of, has truly happened.

    "dumber rock" took over.

  • @IKillLittlegirls and rappers now think they are rockstars.

which is a lie within a delusion.

rappers are rappers or pussies and ex gangster.

rockers are rockers and bad ass's with a point to prove.

sad that guys talking about ass's shaking win out in a open market over someone with a message and a point to what they are doing is shoved at the bottom.

rockstars are people who play rock and have made it big.

rappers will only just be bad poets with nothing to talk about except clubs.

  • now years later..the dumber rock is on top..were has the creativity gone..thank god the 90's creative bands are coming back

  • @tanvo93 The creativity in music is held hostage in the underground. Some for cool cred, another for knowing about the dirty, dirty politics of mainstream labels. Some bands like The Gossip, Against Me!, Band of Horses, and Tegan and Sara busted out of the underground to try and change the airwaves with better music than what people are currently being spoonfed via radio. Dumber rock may still be on top and getting more attention, but those making better music are working on the change.

  • @interpolluter29 i feel u dude..i mean radiohead is super famous but they are still fairly creative in my oppinion..it still eists and thats what i really love..im making my tunes and stuff (just started..im lacking organization lol)..its just the business that kills the art..i mean most people are told what to like by the businesses and most of those people dont kno..well.. shit music is an art..hey well thats capitalism for yea lol

  • Dismemberment Plan WOOOOO

  • ...pearl jam

  • 2:20-2:50 is so true, cedric is a very smart man.

  • this audeo is shit but he is totaly correct, mars volta ftw!

  • Yep, the music industry is at it's all-time low. I can't believe people like listening to computer generated beats along with an auto tuned voice. It takes absolutely no talent, and all of it sounds the same. I think we should hand Justin Bieber a guitar, piece of paper, and pencil, just to see what comes up with. Without his computer, he's nothing but a shallow cliche follower.

  • @ColoredPig "Yep, the music industry is at it's all-time low."...or is it producing an All Time Low??? is what you should have added on to that haha. God that was horrible but it just seemed to fit this whole topic sorry. ATL arent prog rock or hardcore but i figured it still fit...kindof?

  • @ColoredPig wait wait wait, there's much potential in computer generated music.

Many intelligent musicians (yes, musicians) use computers to make great works, its just the ones that are popular only use the simplest and most cliched compositions to please the musically challenged masses.

But i quite agree with you about the state of the music industry, auto tune, and most specifically justin beiber

  • @mikeymoxon

i think you're right... When a person (like me) only listens to rock oriented stuff they dont see the whole spectrum of music, which does include good computer made music.

  • @ColoredPig i kinda agree with u.. but then again i like techno.. then again i like dubstep.. i like industrial black metal.. ect ect.. .all with "computer type sounds" Except i dont watch tv.. and i dont get my music from the tv either..i dont even have cable.. lol only cable internet

  • @ColoredPig I don't have a problem with using technology to make good music - look what bands like Massive Attack do with that..

The trouble is, people use it to make the same generic RnB single over and over and over again.

  • @Supaduck0 yeah i mean theres absolutely nothin wrong wit using modern tech. i admire the prodigy in particular. people even got mad when dylan went electric. bit it all worked out

  • @ColoredPig Yeah but isn't he a pop artist who main audience is children and women. I don't like him but isn't Justin Bieber perfectly entitled to make bubblegum pop music? Justin Bieber belongs to a completely different genre so why in christ's name did you mention him?

What you should be complaining about is the current state of mainstream rock music, where bands like the Red Hot Chili Peppers and the Kings of Leon will eventually obtain legendary status to my dismay, You're a fucking donkey.

  • @ColoredPig Some "computer-generated beats" are really cool, though. You ever listen to Skrillex? And congratulations on the Beiber reference. Really inspired.

  • @ColoredPig At the same time I wish people would open to your mind to the better side of "computer generated beats along with an auto tuned voice", people like James Blake, who are genuinely talented people. Stereotyping any genre, you can find shit music.

  • @platinumdynamite

ok i cant tell you how much I regret posting that comment. Why'd it get top comment? i wish it didnt. I was like 12 when i made that comment, im only a year older but my mind is developing a lot I guess. I dont agree with my comment at all anymore. You're completely right.

  • @ColoredPig although hes not very good, bieber knows what hes doing on a guitar, but it would be funny to watch anyway

  • Comment removed

  • hes right , kids today are sheep theyre not individuals they all listen to crappy empty emo music dress the exact same way and buy stupid ass cell phones, a lot of the blame goes to this handicapped retarded consumer culture, but there is a bright side to this cuz it will only motivate the true free thinking ones to stand out even more, cuz most kids today and ppl for that matter are not rebelling like they should in any way.

  • @44eelz im a 17 year old free-thinking, television hating, individual. and 98 percent of that description fits my high school. im very good at rebelling.

  • @44eelz im a 17 year old, free-thinking, television hating, individual. and 98 percent of your description fits my high school. and im very good at rebelling.

  • @piratejames11 thank goodness for that

  • @piratejames11 are you hipster superman? or just another wannbe rebel?

  • @44eelz fuck you. stop stereotyping kids.

  • @matthewxbrown i dont want to but theyre sheep

  • @44eelz and you. What rebelling to you? Whats your reason? Do you actaully have one or are you just another poli sci major who's big stuff because he's read Marx and Engles while sipping youre mocha cappuccino? you're narrow minded thinking isnt rebelling its enforcing stereotypes which does not help at all. does mot of today's music suck? Yes. is there good stuff out there? Hell Yeah. But you just label the stuff you dont like as emo.

  • no i dont think im big stuff, im not a pretentious person at all. i just am sick of seeing how cloned kids are into following any trend there is, i label the stuff i dont like as mainstream MTV garbage cuz thats what it is, buddy. and most of the that IS emo. so the kids who all look the same and talk the same and buy all the same dumbass cellphones are fine, but me standing aside pointing it out as stupid makes me narrow minded? lol

  • @44eelz You do know that the word emo really isnt a musical genre, right? It's been used to describe bands like ATDI and Fugazi and among others. Emo is more of a time and a place thing. and if we get right down to it emo = emotional which can make for great songs (Ebroligio and Napolean Solo by ATDI are great examples of emotional songs, both about the deaths of people close to Cedric) I'd rather listen to something with heart than some generic rock ballad.

  • @smoky289 exactly, thats i how i feel. But everyones treating emo and sreamo like it

is which i do not agree with. Fugazi is Punk, ADTI has lots of styles but all in all theyre just a great rock band. forget labels. good music is good music, mainstream trends never last.

  • @smoky289 julio vernargsa was a friend of the whole band. he's the person de-loused was made for, and plenty of songs off porcelain by sparta, just facts for anyone reading

  • funny how that was back in wat ever year it was (a fair while ago) and the problems only goten worse...weve now got justin fucking beiber toping the charts...and all these bullshit rap and r + b artists have absolutly no talent and sound all the same...its not fucking music anymore...its not new ideas like the way mars volta do it..its all the same idea...with auto tuning on their voices...with computerized instruments.were has the REAL music gone ay.with original ideas and original MUSICIANS.

  • As Cedric would say, @tommiesmallz is a sheep.

  • forget whats punk, mainstream or whatever the fuk.just jam out.

  • @madengine29 AMEN BROTHER!!!!

  • mars volta sucks atdi rules

  • @tommiesmallz lrn2 troll

  • @chrisjeffsmusic you obviously don't have a clue what trolling is this is is trolling; You are a fucking dipshit suck my dick you fucking faggot. don't fucking comment on things you you don't have a clue about you retarded piece of shit... Now that is some trolling you fucking retard

  • @tommiesmallz

    more like it

need some practice on the delivery however

  • I dont know what the hell he's talking about cuz most of his lyrics make no sense to someone who didn't write them... he's on that hollywood bullshit acting like his shit doesnt stink...

  • Cedric is my hero...

    he should be yours too...

  • im from the same town he's from and i'm from a local band and it's still pretty true, we have dig like a mofo

  • Radio = BS Hip Hop! Love TMV. Check out Opus Dai....local band here in LA and most fans of TMV will like them.

  • I've been a fan of Cedric's for a long time, but I never really took the time to get to know who he is because his music always spoke to me. Now that I'm listening to all of these interviews & finding out his point of view of the world, he's quickly becoming one of my heroes.

  • agree with everything he's said.... but he, for some reason...came out as a prick.

  • the mars volta should take over. the stuff that is out sucks completely. i said this on another video, we need a musical revolution. get rid of the crap that's out now.

  • @drumfoomaster there is nothing revolutionary about the mars volta

  • @tommiesmallz have you listened to the repetitive crap that's being played on the radio? same chord progressions played by every band out there because the record company believes this is what the kids want to hear? no wonder why kids think the crap on the radio is good. that's all they know unfortunately. that's what's pushed on them. you may not think the music is revolutionary. but, what he's talking about is.

  • @drumfoomaster ya i have heard it and that is what i was saying the mars volta is the same repetitive riffs on every other song. they layer them so that it seems like they are doing somthing different when really all of thier songs sound the same just like the bullshit on the radio. the only reason the volta isn't all over the radio is because their songs are all to rediculously long to fit into radio slots i stick by my original statement the mars volta is bullshit

  • @tommiesmallz i understand. that's why i said you may not think m.v. music is revolutionary, but what he's talking about is. do you understand me now?

  • @drumfoomaster ya I understand I don't agree but yes I understand. Actually the things he is saying are things that Henry Rollins and Ian Mcay have been saying since the 80's.

  • @tommiesmallz well henry rollins and ian mcay were definately ahead of their time. but, i'm glad it's being said again. maybe not by the people you agree should say it. but, it is being said.

  • dyke

  • Names:

    Sway Dasafo

    Lady Sovereign

    Meat Beat Manifesto

    The Prodigy

    Soul Coughing

    Stereo Black

    Orgy

the list could be endless...except i have a job and things to do other than search.

  • I completley agree. If people would turn off the radio and the TV and look for their own stuff they MIGHT see that there are so many artists out there who get NO credit because everybody is too lazy to look for their own GD music. i listen to lots of different generes. but about 70% of my 22Gigs of music i found on my own. I was aware of 3 Days Grace and Breaking Benjamin BEFORE most other people because i search on my own. im not spoon fed music by the radio.

  • the video lag makes me feel like im watching a old school Bruce Lee Flick haha

  • An honest interview without that biased ignorant "FUCK MAINSTREAM" attitude. He wanted us to hear them play, so we might save those from the mindless pop garbage out there.

  • i want him.

  • aw he mentions blonde redhead, i love that band.

  • wow, this interview was 10 years ago... And it still applies. Great message.

  • You know- 'nowadays' and 'back then it was like.. way better'. It's such bullshit.

EVERY era has martyrs. EVERY era has very bad shit. A lot of kids today who kick emo and hiphop are the same ones who kicked hair metal and shoegazing. It's the same thing. And yes! They should do that. They really should.

But it doesn't matter! There's always going to be the real artist, the bad artist, and the commercial artist. Doesn't matter- what matters is what you choose to listen to.

  • couldn't say it better.

  • Dude i wonder what they think of all the mainstream stuff now. There isnt even rock anymore. Its all just re-gurgitated pop/rap/4 bass drum to the bar music. I mean i remember headbangers ball on mtv...not anymore its all just sad. ATDI was pretty sick!!

  • the sam way when he made this video.... they made this when they were in the mars volta.. i dont think it would change in the matter of a few years. the radio rock is still the same.

  • @bahl97365 this was recorded in 2000, so no, this is when they were in at the drive in and a solid 10 years ago

  • I Remember when people made fun of mohawks, vans, skinny jeans and punk rock....now everybody wants to party like a rockstar.

  • @WillKill4Weed LOL never though about that. So true!

  • @WillKill4Weed ...i know wut u mean, dude. i used to get ragged on all the time for my tight pants, it didnt bother me though but the fact that skinny jeans r the "trend" now pisses me off and the fohawk shit is just ridiculous.

    PUNK ROCK FOR LIFE!!!

  • @ConnorShawMusic um why is this considered spam?

  • @canthinkverywell ?? dunno

  • Thats funny hes like yes thats very good.

  • Punk rock had a hardcore working class base. The Minutemen, Minor Threat, Black Flag, those guys all had 9-5's. After work they weren't their job though.

  • sure dude, of course, and kurt cobain was virtually homeless, but usually after a couple of years most music movements like this get taken over by wealthier socioeconomic brackets who remove the every day girt and infuse esoterism and elitism...and yes that is a ssweeping statement lol

  • cedrics a smart motherfucker

  • Pain of Salvation, The Mars Volta & Devin Townsend.

  • I just love Mars Volta a little bit more than I did before.

  • if you dont like TMV or ATDI why waist your time listening to there opinions?

  • because the dummy read the title and thought that the TMV was selling out. lol. TMV! best band ever!!!

  • The fact that it's nonsense doesn't even matter. The vocal melody is what matters, and Cedric has the range to essentially just be another instrument.

  • Furthermore, nobody is as bad as Lil' Wayne. Nobody.

Cedric is at the other end of the spectrum.

  • @Itriphus lil wayne is a squirrelly bitch who raps about being addicted to syrup. the mars volta are real ma fuckers, they arent fuckin phoneys like rappers,

"oh im gonna be a rapper, im so badass, i fuck bitches like every other fucking fuy on the planet"

  • @TakeItBrendanLSD the mars volta is soooo fucking fake it's the same bullshit spanish guitar riffs l
