  • was a great Sega game

  • I want this game so bad. I have it on my emulator, but I'm not sure I understand what I'm doing in it.

  • Herzog Zwei was epic... so pissed that someone stoled my megadrive and cart library. Calling it "The original Starcraft" is probably giving Starcraft too much credit for the RTS genre.

  • I absoloutley loved this game as a kid.we would turn it on and leave the house for a few houre and when we came back our cash was full. The only bad thing was you can't exceed 50 units (vehicles, or soldiers )

  • I remember having battles that lasted hours upon hours. I think a few times my buddy and I had so many of the gun turrets that it was impossible for one side to win! This is one of my all time faveroites!

  • I just dragged my Genesis out of the corner where its been rotting for more than a decade now, plugged it all in and after about 2 minutes Herzog launched just fine. Amazing how that is and you can't get an XBOX or XBOX360 to last more than a month without breaking on you. Herzog Zwei is the ultimate grandaddy of all RTS games.

  • If only they'd re-release it in XBOX 360 Arcade or something with multiplayer vs mode I think it would really catch on. Great easy to learn, but hard to master real time strategy.

  • I remember this game since it was so addictive. First strategy game I played then front mission came out later which was an rpg

  • This game was sooo under rated..

  • I remember that tune...This brought up some good memories I had with my siblings. I remember typing in random codes to get a real good combo so I didn't have to play the missions.

I loved herzog zwei dune command and conquer and red alert/starcraft/broodwar. This game was pure strategy. These new games are all graphics. Also, the one thing I hated was you could see your opponent and vice versa, but nowadays that is genius due to hackers. We sometimes divided the screen with cardboard :)

  • herzog was an AMAZING game.

you did have a 50 unit per side unit cap though, we used to stage 50 on 50 battles, so awesome.

  • This game started an addiction that I am proud to continue to this day. I bought this with my Megadrive waaaaay back in 1991 and can remember it costing the earth. It was worth every penny and even today when I play games like Supreme Commander and Command & Conquer, with all their flashy graphics and in game video, I am not as blown away by them as I was with this game, all those years ago...

  • i still play the bastard!!

i still have the cartridge aswell!!

  • Yes i agree so much.

In these new games theres too much " Setting up" which can be annoying.

    This game is masterpiece.

(not talking about graphics.. I meant it as a whole)

  • i still play this game,my fave.i remember i had it but my uncle sold it,years later i bought it for like 60$,worth it!i agree with you,i dont have a ps3 because i play older games like this so much, loolz

  • As far as I know, yeah, this is the first real time strategy game released in the states. This game, when I first played it, was so amazing I didn't know what to do wit myself. Even though, retrospectively, it wasn't that hard it was still incredible given that it was the first of its kind (that I know of).

And yeah, I frickin' love Star Craft because of this game.

  • This game predates Dune 2 with about two years.

So no, the game is not influences by Dune 2. Not even the resource gathering is the same. Though too bad most RTS games borrowed all their ideas from Dune 2, and not this game. Base capture beats the hell out of collecting crystals like in Starcraft and the C&C universe, or spice like in the Dune universe :-)

  • Definitely my favorite genesis game.

They should have advertised this game to death, at least it is respected nowadays.

This game was one of the 1st RTS games, it is an Action RTS hybrid, imagine in Command and conquer if you could personally control a really strong troop while making other troops.

Multiplayer in this game is as intense as it gets.

  • Herzog Zwei has NOTHING to do with

    Starcraft, whatsoever.

HZ came out years before SC. HZ was basicly the first playable RTS game ever.

As Alianger, Herzog Zwei probably inspired Dune II.

"Herzog Zwei - the original Starcraft"

    what an idiotic title!

  • AirRaid and Allianger, I don't understand the miscommunication...

if Herzog was the first playable RTS, then Starcraft is the most playable RTS... that was my logic. And the 'world' of HZ is similar you must admit, to the world of SC. Kinda like a Terran with a the ability to change into an Archon if you need it.

Anyway, I fucking love both games. And I've never played another RTS. If you guys ever want to battle net give me a shout. I'm 'gartonator' in the Europe net.

  • Are you saying that you can play this over the Internet? How do you do that?

  • OG status

  • @AirRaidX 4 years later, I'll just say that a lot of early Blizzard developers credit HZ as the reason they wanted to make an RTS that eventually became Warcraft. This title is pretty accurate.

  • long live herzogzwei...

  • rip off of macross

  • wtf ur talking dude

  • Well that's a rediculous title, but it is a pretty sweet game and probably inspired Dune 2. If you really want to compare it to modern games then I guess Warcraft III is the closest..

  • Not really, this was the sequel to "Herzog" which was only released in Japan for the MSX system.

  • actually if anything it's the opposite dune II was released in like 1992 herzog zwei was released 1989

  • And therefore probably inspired the latter dune 2), like I said.

  • lol sorry dude i miss read i thought you said "inspired by dune II"
