I haven't gotten a good night's sleep in weeks and I haven't done any homework because I've been too busy listening to his music and learning his songs on the piano and guitar. If I fail my college history class, it'll be totally worth it. I'm preparing for my career in music, and who better to demonstrate great musical skill than this man? I'm set.
It's so confusing choosing sides In the heat of the moment Just to see if it's real It's so erotic having you Tell me how it should feel But I'm avoiding all the hard cold facts That I've got to face So ask me just one question When this magic night is through Could it have been just anyone Or did it have to be you And, will you still be saying--
@jaytf1231 Hmm... I do like a lot of his later stuff but I'd have to agree with you to a point. I think Cold Spring Harbour to Turnstiles was sort of his learning period (but I do LOVE them!), The Stranger to Glass Houses was his ABSOLUTE GENIUS section and then The Nylon Curtain to River of Dreams... Well, yeah, I don't adore them as much but there're still some damn good tracks in there
@kyokoushio I also thought 52nd Street stunk. Too mellow. When adults in their 50's and 60's (in 1978) liked that you know it's not rock and roll. Just like Rod Stewart today.
@jaytf1231 the 50 and 60-somethings in 1978 had a much better taste in music than teenagers do right now. Anyway, I don't know why you would post a negative comment here.
@kyokoushio As far as Billy Joel's musical output is concerned, I call the period from the "Nylon Curtain" to "River of Dreams" the "Brinkley years." For obvious reasons, I think.
@kyokoushio I tend to disagree. The "Nylon Curtain" was Billy writing at his absolute best. That was the closest an album ever came to sounding like the Beatles Sgt Pepper album. I have listened to it for almost 30 years now without tiring of it.
@jaytf1231 I reckon you have to include Nylon Curtain on the good albums list. Good meaning fucking great of course. Went down hill from innocent man. Still listenable but toooooo poppy sugary. I just don't care after that. tried to make myself listen to the bridge but....
@phenumpkin I agree!!! Some of the first few comments on here were saying the same thing actually and I'd never really noticed it before, but yes it does :)
@michelescoones I know! I should imagine seeing him live would be one of the most AMAZING THINGS EVER! :D Oh Billy, do come back to England for a show or two... :(
@TheFooey Hmm... I want Miami 2017 up there too please
...Argh! It's so hard to choose a top three!!! I'm going to say:
1.Only The Good Die Young
2. I Don't Want To Be Alone
3. Miami 2017
I'm afraid Scenes just misses out - it's about number 4 or 5 for me I think... Actually, can I just replace number 1 with the whole Stranger album? XD
I'd go with second favourite too - I just loooooooove the B side so much! For my favourite however I'm afraid I have to go with the crowd and say The Stranger.
I've been checking out all Billy's stuff that aren't on his greatest hits volumes, like the B side of Glass Houses for example. it's all excellent so far, I don't think I've heard a single song that i distinctly dislike.
loved this album. wore the grooves off of side 1 ( you may be right, justa fantasy rocknroll) must have been a year before i discovered the gems on the B side. this tune and sleeping with television on in particular.
I had the same sort of experience though - I bought it for 'Fantasy' and just listened to that over and over. Eventually I had the sense to let it play through though - I'm so glad I did!
I know what you mean - I've got the original version of Streetlife Serenade (albeit a second-hand one :( I'm not lucky enough to have lived through the '70's/'80's...) but you have to admit, there's something special about owning an old CD (although I'd far rather have the superior sound quality!)
The great thing about Mr Joel is that his music can be listened to by anyone :) I'm 16 and my father who is in his 50's is the one who introduced me to Billy's music
He certainly is. I would have loved to have seen him live. I got truly hooked when i caught a little of a live perferomance of goodnight siagon way back when, don't remember where it was or even when, though it was a long ime ago. I wanted "you may be right" as my wedding music 3 years ago but my husband, whilst agreeing that I am crazy wouldn't let me have it! My fav stuff though is the 50.s style on innocent man. My kids love it too specially river of dreams (after a few beers!) x
Would love to hear or see a live version of "I Don't Want To Be Alone". It is a great song. Should have been released as a single. Glass Houses is probably my favourite album.
Glass Houses is second only to The Stranger for me. The Stranger was the first of his albums I ever heard so it deserves a special place in my heart :) but Glass Houses was the first I owned and I love it to bits.
Same :D If anyone does find a live version and could post a link here, I'd be most grateful - and I know many others would too
I like that I know the French bit now ^^ Singing in French is fun ('specially as how I'm so incredibly crap at languages -_-' Just reinforcing the stereotypical view of the English and their inability to learn languages here ^^; I'm very jealous of people who are good at foreign languages)
Yes. This song is brilliant. Have never heard or seen a live version of this. Maybe it's one of those songs that Billy just doesn't play at his concerts. :( He's even played C'Etait Toi live surprisingly enough.
Eh, it really isn't fair :( I want to hear this and I want to hear 'Half A Mile Away' and 'Last Of The Big Time Spenders' done live. As much as I do love the song, he could have chosen a better one from this album than C'etait Toi to do live...
The only pro-shot footage from that era for certain is a late 1979 show in Houston, TX that engineer Phil Ramone also recorded. Billy and his band took a break form the sessions and did a handful of shows and were previewing a handful of Glass Houses songs in the set: You May Be Right, Sometimes A Fantasy, All For Leyna (guitar solo instead of the synth solo)
I Don't Want To Be Alone was played early in the 1980 tour. I have it on an audience tape from a show in Wembley.
Opening (The Mexican Connection), Only the Good Die Young, Movin' Out
Honesty, My Life, Piano Man, All for Leyna
with guitar solo not synth solo!, Prelude/Angry Young Man,New York State of Mind, The Stranger, Until the Night,
Sometimes A Fantasy, Root Beer Rag
She's Always a Woman, Stiletto, Zanzibar, You May Be Right, Vienna, Just the Way You Are, Big Shot, Scenes from an Italian Restaurant, Get it Right the First Time, Souvenir
You are very welcome, and there's nothing wrong with getting up at 6am to listen to it - there's no such thing as an unsuitable time to listen to Billy Joel! :D
It is true that so talanted musician inspire so much that a person wishes to become more brave to use own abilities to play different instruments, sing, dance.

Yeah, well... It was released in 1980 - I don't think that one year really makes much difference. I just wish that I'd been around to see the 70's/80's...
fantastic album. I've owned it on cassette, vinal and CD. In fact, it was the first CD I bought, along with my first CD player back in 198mumblemumblemumble.
Wow! You had it on vinyl? I'm rather jealous actually (you can keep the cassette though!) If I want to steal any of my dad's vinyl, I have to wait for him to rip it down to mp3 for me... I'm not even allowed to touch the turntable... I am a bit clumsy though... :D
This and 'Sleeping with the Television On' are my two favourite songs from this album. The 70's were (in my opinion) the best years for music. I only wish I could have been alive then :D
Ah well, I'll just go raid my dad's music collection instead... :)
I'm glad you like it :D All of the songs off of the Glass Houses album have a special place in my heart as it was the very first Billy Joel album I ever bought
The famous songs are amazing too but, in my opinion, lots of Billy Joel's lesser known tracks deserve to be far more well known - this is one of my favourites (as I said in the description) I'm glad other people like it too :)
You're very welcome, though really I feel as though I should be thanking you for all of your Billy Joel posts. I've been through your videos so many times - especially the live performances that I haven't found anywhere else :)
Wow... thank you so much. I never thought many people would actually like my videos... I'm just trying to share Billy Joel's blessed music with the world...
I'd love to be able to play keyboard/piano by ear! (I'm struggling to learn piano...) You're so lucky to be able to work it out!!! Working out tunes/solos on my saxophone is about my limit but I'll keep trying - although I think my family's a bit fed up of this :)

This and 'Sleeping with the Television On' are my two favourite songs from this album. The 70's were (in my opinion) the best years for music. I only wish I could have been alive then :D
Ah well, I'll just go raid my dad's music collection instead... :)

Glass Houses would probably have to be my favourite album if I had to choose one of his

אני גם אוהב את סקסופון והיא מאוד גס את השיר סיפור עצוב אבל הוא עדיין אוהב אותי או למה זה כי אני אוהב? ברכות מ מקסיקו

It is a very lovely song, and yes it is quite sad but with a happy ending ^^ - the saxophone is great too: I introduced my saxophone teacher to it :)

I know - they're both great aren't they? I can't believe they aren't both more famous. They certainly deserve to be :D
Regards from England (wow - it's actually sunny today!)

This is a great track, He sounds a little like Elvis Costello on this one.

It really is a great song :D You're right about Elvis Costello by the way - I'd never noticed it before but now that you mention it...

The famous songs are amazing too but, in my opinion, lots of Billy Joel's lesser known tracks deserve to be far more well known - this is one of my favourites (as I said in the description) I'm glad other people like it too :)

I was equally shocked that it couldn't be found on the Tube. Great song. Thank you, kyokoushio!

This is my favorite song too!!
I play keyboard and, like you I tried to play this on my keyboard so I had to listen million times before I could play the whole song.

I'd love to be able to play keyboard/piano by ear! (I'm struggling to learn piano...) You're so lucky to be able to work it out!!! Working out tunes/solos on my saxophone is about my limit but I'll keep trying - although I think my family's a bit fed up of this :)
