did he just use an electric screw driver and screw through the fiberglass? to install the subs into his custom box? Can you do this to add screw holes? Or would it crack the fiberglass
@arsan1972 no it doesnt matter at all, actually its better to mat the inside as it seal air leaks better and makes it much easier to bondo and much much less sanding.
i hate smart azzes that always got sum stupid sht to say fuck ya all ya belong to the hater race jaja let this dude do his sht how ever the fuck he wants do your sht how ever you want
Very nice work. Awesome results on the paint. When I fiberglassed, I didn't use bondo. So when I tried painting it, all the imperfections were brought out. Of course I was using spray paint... but I just ended up carpeting and it looked great! I loved the finished product. But man I remember how much of a pain it was to lay that fiberglass.. what a mess..
you got down on that video and the other video with the memphis speaker too. Quick question what kinda fabric is that cause that don't look like fleece cause I'm bout to make a box with fiberglass?
hey dude....nice work youve done there...im just wondering, for making a custom box like this...is just the shirt over the top to make the mould enough or should i put something else? also what kind of wood do you advise to use? im new to this and havent made one yet
@fordboy111591 Actually the leading brand here in mexico is called "optima" ha ha ha By the way, i do use fiberglass math for stregth, the t-shirt is only to obtain the shape you want and have a base to worck with.
Someone please tell me how to calculate the volume for custom shaped sub enclosures! I've just been doing boxes as a hobby but now I have people asking me to do custom REALLY weird shaped boxes and trying to tell them which sub would work best in the box volume created. If that makes sense lol. Would be great if there was a device that could figure it out somehow =(
Of course man, tons of mat added, but i only use it on the back side of the enclosure so the front is more linear and bump free. Makes it a lot easy to sand it down and obtain a nice smooth finish. :b
Very nice looking.Wouldn't you want to add the mat to the back before the paint?Pics don't look like it was added yet. Also, how did you deal with the split wood at 1:00 that ecoots asked about?Guess you could just lay glass mat around the splits?I'm going to try pods like these soon for the 1st time, although I have done fiberglass bodywork before.Nice designs!
@CivicFiberglassDoor The thing that I do for that is put the glass on the inside of the box(or is that what you meant by back side?). What did you use to paint all of the pieces? an air gun?
hey man looks good i do this all the time. and have lots of fun next time you do one try using hot glue on the sticks to hold your rings up it works great for me and they are easier to take out when done you can use in on your mold cloth as well instead of the staples
They are attached from the back panel to the MDF frame of the speaker´s door pods using 3/4" screws, than i sealed all seams from the back using silicon, no big deal here.
very easy google the name of your woofer !!! on kicker site it give you the messures for the box depending on the size of the woofer ,tha way u know how many cubic feet you need
It´s too long to explain over here, but i can tell you to take the base box cubic feet and leave a margin. For example, if you need 2 cubic feet for your subwoofer make a 1.8 box and then the extra curve shapped fiberglass will give you the extra .2 cubic feet. You can test the resul by filling the box with water (exact galons) and the convert the gallons to cubic feet. There are other ways, but very complex.
hey great job with that it looks incredible, i just have a few questions. #1, if you make your subs come out that far from the original box will it effect teh sound? (i heard that for a certain sized sub you need a certain sized box in cubic inches or something? and #2is it possible to put a video or something with a detailed explination how i can do this? thanks alot for you time :) keep doing good wirk
Hi man, #1 the subwoofers still are inside the box, the shape is unregular, but still just one box. Yes, you do need to give the proper amount of "air space" to a subwoofer, it is measure in cubic feet, A simple formula for square or rectangular shapes is width x height x depth divided by 1728 and the result will be cubic feet. For example 12" x 12" x 24" ecuals 3456" / 1728= 2 cubic feet. Irregular shapes are much more dificult if you have no experience. Good luck man.
Ok, here is the deal, the t-shirt cloth is like any other, it is used only to make the !shapes" of what you want to built, but you still need to put fiberglass cloth at least 2 layers if it is for speaker pods and 3 to 4 if it is for a subwoofer box. Now, what i do is this... On the front side, upper side, or whatever you whant to call it i use 4 or 5 layers or fiberglasss resin only (no cloth other than the t-shirt. Then i apply the fiberglass cloth and resin layers in the back side or inside.
By using only resin in the front side and the fiberglass resin and cloth on the inside/back side will give you a very hard structure and it will be very easy to sand and smooth down, and other nice thing by doing it this way is that when you sand it down it wount itch you, because you will be sandin resin only and maybe t-shirt cloth, and the fiberglass cloth and resin is what itches wen sanded. Try it out, trial and error, thats how i learned, is no big deal if you mess up a few times. I did!
right after seeing the vid this morning i ran acoss the street to lowes and picked up some mdf board and then went to doller general for the t-shirts and im workin on my own.
hahaha, i´m glad you found inspiration on this vid, it´s very easy to work with fiberglass, just take your time the first time and you will have good results.
i has spreading the resin on and the cheap ass shirt from doller general ripped at one of the staples and lossend it all and when i tried to pull it tight and staple it agin it just ripped all the way up to the bass so ya that was a bich and i gotta start all over agin.
Weird, that´s never happen to me, is it 100% cotton? I think the ones i use are 100% cotton. Maybe you can try not to pull it too tight, find the right amount of "stiffnes" because too little can cause some waves on the shapes. Good luck man.
Si, va adelante justo sobre el tanque de gasolina, se me acabo la bateria cuando lo filmaba en el otro video, tratare de subir otro donde si se ve como quedo el amp rack. gracias por tu comentario.
no you cant buy the rings pre cut but just rent a router if you dont have one they are super easy to make. Hamacaman, did you not lay any fiberglass? did you just do resin over the cloth and then bondo?
I did use fiberglass on the back side of every piece i made on this video, 3 layers and in some spots 4 layers. Bondo came after all was very hard and thick.
oh okay so you fiberglassed the inside? cuz when i did mine i fiberglassed overtop of the cloth after i soaked it in resin and it was hard to keep the shape right
yeah, i know, thats why i prefer to use the fiberglass on the inside only every time its posible, there are some times that is just imposible to do it this way, but when i can, its so much easier to sand and keep the shapes.
you put on fleece and then soak it with resin, lay it dry, then put fiebrglass down and soak with resin, sand it good and repeat 2 or 3 times, sand that really good and then put on bondo and sand it out wit 50 grit 80 grit 120 grit 220 grit and then a fine fine fine grit to make sure it is smooth
Nice work, it looks great..
