I think bttf 2 had a lot more heart than the first one because Biff KILLS George in the alternate present and Marty cries when he finds out about it, and then when he goes back to 1955 and sees his young parents together again you can tell he feels good again just like in the first movie. These guys bash every movie just to generate controversy, just like those "tough judges" in reality shows.
Those were isolated moments in Back to the Future 2. The first one had more of them, while part 2 was more about gadgets and action sequences, which is what Gene and Roger were talking about.
@jimbob1234567 Do you know what "Special Effects" means, you fucking retard? I'll gladly "fuck off" to avoid trying to talk some sense into you about the meaning of the term. Fucking idiot.
@jimbob1234567 You're proving my point for me. The movie only "blew" because you expected a movie with a plot. That movie was intended to be an end-of-the-world, heavily-special-effects oriented movie (for lack of a better term) and people expected more than that. If you went to watch that movie expecting anything other than that, well... let's keep this civil and just say you expected too much... For the _Special_Effects_ that movie did not suck.
I agree completely with Siskel. This film was loud, frantic, unpleasant and it felt tired like bad sequels always do. The 3rd film had more charm, but still wasn't up to the originals standards.
@DaveM599 You're a moron, you're saying the 3rd one had more charm than the second? Regardless each movie has different aspects to stand out on its own. First movie was more action, the second was more science fiction and the third was western.
@WalkenTheWalk Would you care to explain just what single element in BTTF 2 actually worked? Also can't some people on the net actually present arguments rather than just insult someone and then demonstrate that they can't present an argument. The second film is mechanical, shallow, frantically plotted without any real imagination or purpose. How many scenes are there that just keep the plot setup moving forward, but have no proper justification in themselves. This is a very poor film.
@DaveM599 Critics are just like assholes, filled with shit. And I'm rebutting to your statement, Its a total mindtrip which the 1st and 3rd didnt have. The problem is when you compare any of these three movies to eachother your opinion is void. Like I said they all stand on their own right.. I would love to know what scenes were tired? Its like comparing limes and lemons. And frantic? Thats what all 3 movies are. ITS A RACE AGAINST TIME WITH WRENCHES BEING THROWN IN! Its supposed to be frantic.
@WalkenTheWalk actually, you can almost prove that part 2 is the worst of the sequels. start with the writing. in the original, the plot is complicated, but its a reciprocal and cyclical plot which accounts for and expands upon everything that is presented to you early on in a clever way. in part 3, its a much more straightforward story, but cleanly and efficiently written with numerous references and double entendres to time travel...
@WalkenTheWalk on the writing level, the first mistake in part 2 is that 1/3 of the film is dedicated to resolving a small detail in the ending to part 1, which was just a joke ending. then, the last act basically is just a remake of the ending to part 1. pretty shoddy plotting there. The second big mistake in the film is the over indulgence into special effects. the appeal of back to the future is largely character driven, so giving so much space to big effects deflates much of the...
@WalkenTheWalk ..anticipation of seeing a sequel to the original film. its not bad, but compared to the other films, it is the worst. just my thoughts on the matter.
@DaveM599 this movie really is all of those things. I've seen all 3 films numerous times, and part 2 is the one that you think might be better (than it really is) after not seeing it for awhile, but then you catch it on TV and realize it is pretty bad compared to 1 and 3. the only part thats pretty good is the part where Biff has his trashy casino empire in the alternate 1985.
Ebert is so ugly and out of style that it hurts. How can anyone take his opinions of movies seriously? Oh, his nerd "fans". Can he get worse? Well, now he is missing his jaw!

To me, this is the worst of the series but I still enjoy it.
The most annoying thing about the movie is Griff, Biff's grandson. It's quite possibly the worst piece of over-acting ever seen in a film. I mean...GOD, IT'S BAD!!!
I would say it's on par with John Travolta in Battlefield Earth, but perhaps I may be going too far on that one.
no human emotion? one of the themes in the middle of the film is marty trying to save his dad who ends up dead from biff and his mother from marrying biff at the same time.
while i love these 2 i think they dont give this film enough credit
@Kingdom007Hearts I think it was spot on for once. The future part was interesting but the rest fails for the exact reasons S&E give. Marty's dad died, but then again he's not in the movie, except as a "mystery man". Lorraine marrying Biff cost some goofyness, not really something that gets audience emotionally invested. In retrospect it was a sedge-way to get Marty and Emmet in to wild west for BTTF3
@Retardretroguy i respectfully disagree b/c i dont mind the 2nd film being about Biff when the first is about Marty's dad and the 3rd is about Doc Brown. At any rate, the series itself is a fantastic trilogy
The reason being is when Marty and Jen get into the delorean and go to 2015, they could not have had kids and see themselves in the future.
According to the first movie, they will skip over the time, so thus they aren't in that timeline anymore. It doesn't matter that they go back to 1985 afterwards, for the time being they skipped over that time.

@highwaysonyfan87 They did use some stock footage. They recreated some scenes but they also used stock footage. That's why Crispin Glover was pissed off. Apparently he wanted the same salary as Michael J. Fox and Universal or whoever didn't agree (and why should they). So they just used lookalikes and stock footage for scenes with George like at the beginning of the film and the bit where George knocks out Biff from the first film

I like the idea of watching sequals without an understanding of context. If we hadn't seen BTTF 1 we would be watching a really tripped out psychadelic movie. Also, I'm glad that it focused on Biff: one of the great movie characters of all time.
I love some of the clever shots where marty and the doc go back to the 50's again, and and we see their counterparts from the original film. That always makes me laugh for some reason.
One thing I like in this film is how a book about every sports event in fifty years is about the size of a small magazine. In reality, wouldn't that have to be like a huge series of books a millian times bigger than that little magazine?
Roger is wrong again!! The sequel may needed to have been made to make way for the third film (which was great!) but honestly, the second film was only a shadow of its predecessor and a very thin one at that.
Every Fuckign Movie is: BRILLIANT. and for all you losers trying to over summarize the 3 movies, this movie is about Marty traveling through time travel period steroetypes and cliches...its supposed to be intelligent fun you dimwit old ass losers. geesus
Yeah ....the first movie is about Marty's parents.....the second is about Biff and the third is the doc's movie --- through all three movies Marty is never a pivotal character but the pivotal characters cause him to change his own destiny.
Honestly BTTF Part II was better then Part 1 and 3. Part 3 I didnt like, Part 1 was good but BTTF Part II just really has a lot more content and stuff like that. I do love the 1st 2 but the 2nd is just better IMO
Very true bloodicecream. But one thing I noticed with Siskel was that he had a certain love for kid movies and animations. He would have loved Wall-E for example and his Toy Story review was so positive his head looked like it could burst with excitement. I do agree though that Ebert is generally the better reviewer and I like him more than Siskel. Its to sad that Siskel passed away and now Ebert is having serious health issues. I miss them both terribly. Their reviews were the best!
Have to agree with Siskel. Both Fox and Lloyd just shout for most of the movie and it's short on really engaging ideas. It just feels like the mechanics of the time travel plot took over from the characters and it's a typically tired and disappointing sequel that just can't recapture the magic of the original.
The Back to the Future series is one of the best series of films out there! the original is a ton of fun, the second wasn't as good but was still a lot of fun, and the third was, different, but still really enjoyable
part 2 is my favourite only because i never watched the 1st one because it barely airs on Aus tv. must of watched part 2 and 3 like 20 times each before watching the first one
Rob Zemeckis never expected the first film to succeed hence to silly ending with the flying car. I loved part two, it was entertaining and very very interesting as well. Got to say a great recovery in part 3, the film made up for any short fall in part 2. Also credit Rob Zemeckis, it takes talent to repair a trilogy like that. Part one was not a fluke.
tough act to follow and all that, the audience has expectations after a first film. I loved all the films you mentioned. This film looks like a master piece compared to some of the dross we see today.
Back to the Future Part II is my favourite and this sequel weren't noisy Gene :( this film was action filled and had alot of funny moments, going to be doing a presentation on this film for college :)
For me, saying 2 is better than 1 is like saying Jar Jar Binks is better than Han Solo. The original BTTF had originality, magic, wit and charm. The sequels were shallow cartoons that lowered the bar considerably: Fox constantly mugging and screaming playing his relatives using "funny" voices; Tom Wilson playing Biff's grandson, "Griff." (They rhyme! Get it?) It's just not amusing to keep repeating the same gags from movie to movie (Marty unconscious, etc); yet they kept doing it.
It seems some people have trouble understanding that the makers of BTTF weren't trying to make an accurate prediction of the future, but rather an entertaining movie. (Whether they succeeded in that is another matter.) They had cars fly because it was a cool gag to end the first film with, not because they were making any boastful predictions.
You say you're going to 'laugh your ass off' in five years. Why? This is like saying 12 Monkeys is dumb because the world didn't end in 1996.
These guys couldn't handle a movie that doesn't involve a straight plot line! After all Ebert help write some of the most movies in need of MST3K commentary.
i think sometimes siskel was a little too pompous, he never allows himself to enjoy a movie for what it is and instead has his own idea of what the movie should be...
ebert is a lot more liberal and understands that not all movies are created equal and they all serve different purposes.

Thank god one of these 2 idiots is dead. It goes to show that Hollywood movies can be destroyed before they air by a couple of monopolizing jews with no taste. BTF2 did not involve any noise and Biffs character did not take over the movie. If anything this movie was quite well done for a 1990 sequel.
I definitely agree with Ebert here. BTF2 is terrific and much better than the 3rd.

WHAT I LOVE is that MAYBE IT STILL POSSIBLE FOR THE CUBS TO WIN THE WORLD SERIES

JRodHacker 1 year ago
One thing I like in this film is how a book about every sports event in fifty years is about the size of a small magazine. In reality, wouldn't that have to be like a huge series of books a millian times bigger than that little magazine?

as always i'm with Roger!
waxlrose73 1 year ago
Roger is wrong again!! The sequel may needed to have been made to make way for the third film (which was great!) but honestly, the second film was only a shadow of its predecessor and a very thin one at that.

Yeah ....the first movie is about Marty's parents.....the second is about Biff and the third is the doc's movie --- through all three movies Marty is never a pivotal character but the pivotal characters cause him to change his own destiny.

I think this movie is pure 80's classic, I mean not as much as the first movie, but its still fun!!! Its a great comedy
xaxie1 1 year ago

Irishsoldier1916 1 year ago
i actually loved the second part. Because biff is even more evil in this movie and actually makes his hellish universe as a revenge to marty

Although 2 and 3 are not my favorite of the series, they are still enjoyable to watch.
Its like watching Ed Wood's Plan 9. Its a terrible movie with a camp value that overshadows it.

@arc20051: I loved three and one, two though not so much.. yet at least Back to the Future didnt have third movie sucks syndrome..

It's always the second movie that gets bashed the most.
Examples:
Superman II
Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom
Back To The Future II
But the public loved them!

tough act to follow and all that, the audience has expectations after a first film. I loved all the films you mentioned. This film looks like a master piece compared to some of the dross we see today.

Love this movie, despite the chaos that Siskel talked about. I love when those two bicker.
desotowrong 2 years ago
For me, saying 2 is better than 1 is like saying Jar Jar Binks is better than Han Solo. The original BTTF had originality, magic, wit and charm. The sequels were shallow cartoons that lowered the bar considerably: Fox constantly mugging and screaming playing his relatives using "funny" voices; Tom Wilson playing Biff's grandson, "Griff." (They rhyme! Get it?) It's just not amusing to keep repeating the same gags from movie to movie (Marty unconscious, etc); yet they kept doing it.
WastedPo 2 years ago
It seems some people have trouble understanding that the makers of BTTF weren't trying to make an accurate prediction of the future, but rather an entertaining movie. (Whether they succeeded in that is another matter.) They had cars fly because it was a cool gag to end the first film with, not because they were making any boastful predictions.
You say you're going to 'laugh your ass off' in five years. Why? This is like saying 12 Monkeys is dumb because the world didn't end in 1996.
WastedPo 2 years ago
I saw this movie and was able to follow it perfectly well. If you pay close attention you shouldn't have a hard time understanding what's going on.

i think sometimes siskel was a little too pompous, he never allows himself to enjoy a movie for what it is and instead has his own idea of what the movie should be...
ebert is a lot more liberal and understands that not all movies are created equal and they all serve different purposes.
