The design looked stunning until some Chinese Commie Bueracrat fuckwit ripped out the hole out of the top and put in a rectangle. Might as well have filled the fucking hole in completely because it looks shit now.

That's right. It was circular at first, but it would have been too reminiscent of Japan's rising-sun symbol. And that would never do in a Chinese city.

the best part of shanghai is the designs of the buildings. each and every skyscraper has a unique design and makes the skuline beautiful. even shanghais's nightlight is amazing. NYC(my home) has far more skyscrapers but many buildings look a bit plain compared to shanghai's buildings. in night shanghai has the best skyline on the planet.

now,the design of the roof is not a circle...the circle design is got a protest from some chinese and mayor of shanghai because its too similiar to japan's rising sun flag...later,the design was changed to trapezoidal design submitted by KPF on november 2005.And,you can see it now.

it is a gorgeous city but i wouldnt refer 2 it as modern. to me hongkong is a modern chinese city, considered the comparatively more mature education + social/medical security systems, transparent and efficient equity market. BUT sooner or later shanghai's gonna...well i wouldnt say replace,but maybe get ahead of HK.

The video is a bit out of date... the hole on top of the building is square, and by 2010 they will build (or start to build) the 459m Xujiahui Tower, next to Jin Mao(421m) and SWFC(492m).

new york &london are by far not as large or futuristic as shanghai , i have lived in all 3 shanghai alone by 2010 will have more skyscrapers than both combined , nor is londons or newyork have a maglev train into the citys that move you at 430 kph any building in shanghai is considered old at 10 yrs age
