it clearly shows that they r desparately and relentlessly looking for life on Mars, I think that they have got some clues about the life existance on mars and that makes them to carry out such extremely expensive campaign.
Finally, after so many bad news from the US (the crisis, the weak Obama policies, the 2010 election, the rise of the Tea Party, the debt, the budget cuts, the idiotic republican candidates, the repression of the Occupy movements, and so on) at least something for Americans to be proud of. Thanks from Argentina, I guess in the name of humanity.
@stinkygeorgia1 You think? I haven't made a social return analysis of the NASA budget, but my guess is that it inspires a lot of people to become scientists or just be interested in science (math, engineering...), which is GREAT for any society. As I've said, it also makes people feel proud of their country and for people of other countries, it can make them admire the US In any of these cases, I think every Dollar in the NASA budget is best spent than those billions and billions in the military
@cristianfcao >>> Exploration is fine, but to do it on my dime is a waste of taxpayers money - my money. Looking for life on Mars or elsewhere in the universe is ludicrous.
@Sevival So? The EU is in worse shape than the US, ok but how about Africa, then? Anyway, the rocket was launched in the US, and I'm from Argentina! Finally, I can't comment on how well informed Americans are compared to other counties. The stereotype is that they are less informed about news worldwide, but I haven't seen any actual data.
@006JoeS Thanks for that. Funnily, I asked a similar question of a pair of JPL scientists a few weeks ago: "Why don't we build two or maore of anything (less money per bird than one-offs); fly one; and, if successful, fly the other? 2 Hubbles, 2 Curiosities, etc. They said the way NASA has traditionally managed contracts, it would turn out to be more – much more – than double for two and so on. This seems like it defies physics – or at least good sense. But that's what they told me.
@VideoFromSpace Neat! My friend worked on 'The Curiosity' for years. I am so proud of her .. but yes, I have also wondered why they don't just double up... ? not launch them all, but make an extra. I guess... maybe they need to learn from failures if they do occur. Fingers crossed that all goes well!

@cristianfcao Oh you ignorant americans!
What happens in the US isnt even HALF as bad of what happens in the EU now.
The euro is in a massive crisis, countries and banks go bankrupt, countries have no government etc..
Americans can only see what bad things happen to them, for the rest of the world they don't even care

@ROTSTarge what does Russia have on mars? have they tried to land there?
notdatingnicole 3 months ago
@notdatingnicole they lost contact with their probe to Mars' moon, Phobos-Grunt. It is still in orbit, but the battery is running out of energy.

SURE my good sir.
Remember that feeling you got when you watch "Contact" ?
When they blew up the first ship, just a silly reference to that movie.
I wonder if they had a back up if anything went wrong?
