Anyone who is criticizing Josh for not becoming a GM and thinking he sucks or is making excuses needs to remember that he has won 13 national Tai Chi push hands tournaments and 3 world championships. What do you mean "Best Junior Player in North America"?! That would be Bobby Fisher won the Junior Championshsip, made GM at 15, youngest ever. Moreover, Sarwer seems to be the more talented. He never had lessons; he quit chess as a child, then returned as an adult and entered a tournament with 83 players and 4 GMS and took THIRD. Josh sometimes teaches in Marcelos academy. When i first came in into the academy he was very helpful, and seemed very down to earth. At first i had no idea who he was till i ran across some of these videos today.
Makes you think about how small this world really is.
I just want to say to anyone who experiences this video and has the response "wow this dude is really successful.....feelings of jealousy and inferioity arise and then one might have the tendency to just start criticisizing and seeing all the negatives.
Just a piece of advice if I may....Instead of going into cutting him to pieces to cut him down to a smaller size see if there is something you can learn from him. Open your mind and let go of the negative feeling towards him...he might have something worth while to say and learn from. Good luck to you on your personal journey toward success and learning.
@gadmc2 If you read his book and had an open mind about his apporach to learning instead of being competitive with him you might see the value in his approach. Of course you have a right to your own view of things and it is a valuable point of view simply because it is yours...by why do you have such an intense reaction to him? I am having difficulty understanding that...just an observation.
@gadmc2 You are undistinguished , but Waitzkin is an international master in chess , the best junior player in the history of North America , and he is a Tai Chi master as well . He would also kick your ass after embarassing you by pointing out your lack of intellect .
Why is he lying about Jeff? Even in his book he is perpetuating the lie that he won the first Nationals and Jeff lost....the truth is they both won. So why the lie? What do you think?
I haven't read his book but i am a fan of him as a chess player....i have absolutely no interest in martial arts but chess is probably my number 1 personal interest. I bought Chessmaster 10th Edition ages ago and since i went through his academy section on it ive been a fan of him. He just blew me away with his knowledge on everything. he's just a natural talent at all phases of the game. i can somewhat relate to him because ive been playing chess since i was exactly six yrs old as well.
@BeauG1990 I also came to know about him through his chessmaster course. I only started playing recently and his course was quite delightful for a novice. Though Searching for bobby fischer made me sick to the stomach, and his new book didn't help either.
I am currently at the third part of the book. I got to admit, it is very inspiring, instructive, and candid; particularly it is a semi autobiography of a champion who is able to know at each stage of the learning curve, how he moved up and to recover from success and failure. To me success and failure are the two most recurring themes in our life.
While it may not be the authoritative book on learning, or on life, but it gave me a lot of answers because I know that although my life is very different from his, I am handling the same issues that he is and I now can access the same tools that he has - that of a champion.
I think he plateaued around 2300 to 2400. Many players hit a wall at that level and never make it higher. Josh is a wonderful chess writer and teacher for intermediate players but he may not have what it takes to go beyond 2400. A strong international GM reaches 2600 to 2700. It seems the strongest contender in the US right now is Haikura Nakamura. Waitzkin has been out of competitive chess for too long. It would take too long to get where he was, and he may not get there.
The self rating algorithms tend to be a bit generous. Its usually much harder to get a high rating in over the board play. But if you remember you are playing to have fun and learn, you will have a positive experience regardless of your rating.
I thought it may have been on the generous side, because back in theday, i went into my hometown centre, where they have large chessboards set up for anyone to play. At the time i had (i thought) a rating of around 1850, however in that first 'real' game i was royally thrashed by this old polish dude!lol!
inclined mathematically and scientifically more towards the engineering side than the medical side and obviously well spoken because he just revealed it,
personality: full of himself, rightfully so, attempting to assert control by the language he uses, were all sinners on a minor level , remember that :)
There are only two reasons one would be so critical of Josh: 1) stupidity or 2) jealousy.
Josh is the embodiment of everything Star Trek TNG stands for....the continual improvement of ones self, its like the bumper sticker says: "The truly educated never graduate". He has a better grasp and level of maturity than most people even three times his age. He is brutally honest and totally without pretense. Keep Rockin Josh!
He doesn't seem full of himself at all. He seems more to be someone who sees chess as an art, and a love, and a catalyst for learning and self-improvement. There is nothing arrogant about that. He didn't compete to win, he competed to ensure that he would never lose, and that he would always rise to a higher level of personal being. Why strive for less than you are?
the brain has amazing ways to act when we are in danger. I rember when i was 9 and i jumped down from a boulder and slized up the inside of my leg right under the knee on a sharp rock so you could see the bone. My mother was going into shivering/shock and I was comforting her. Didnt feel any pain just warmth and calmness.
Get Chessmaster 10th Edition, Josh has an academy section its truley AMAZING, seriously amazing I could listen to his storys on the academy and talking about games . . . its great.
In chessmaster 9000 is also his chess game tutorials or just game analyses. He has said it's just amazing to win a grandmaster when he was 10 especially for his father was very proud of him. He said he had wonderful experience to playing chess and now he just quit.
lol btw sorry for calling josh a clown, he certainly isn't, i respect him highly, its just that i heard interviews with bobby where he was mad about the release of searching for bobby fischer b/c he wasnt getting any money for it
look your point is he's not good enough to be a gm and im saying he beat a gm at the age of 11 so that means he must be good enough to be a gm but just didnt have the drive to attain it.. end of discussion! :P
mayb the gm was on coke, it seems hard to believe that a person who had a rating of 2400+ just didnt want to be a GM.. he was obviously involved in chess, my view is he wasnt good enough..
GM is just a title, you have to make norms that only FIDE understand to achieve it. He smashed a lot of GMs even as a 11yr boy. He has the strengh but not the norms, thats it
You can download his games and run them in a chess program, such as Fritz. If you mean see a video, then you're on your own.
He's not that good compared with professional chess players. Just watch that kid, Magnus Carlson. He's the real deal (He's about 1000 times better than this guy) Josh became a mere IM at 16. Magnus Carlsen became a GM (Grand Master) at 13!!!
Correction: as you inferred on your own. I didn't "make it sound" one way or the other. Moreover, I just picked that Magnus kid out of my ass. The comment would be just as valid if I'd mentioned any Grand Master. My point was that JW has no business being on the cover of a Chess Program. Vishy Anand, Magnus C., Kramnik, Judit Polgar etc... do.
you said "professional chess players", not every professional chess player is a grandmaster, let alone a so-called super-grandmaster, like all the players you mentioned by name. of course Waitzkin has never been nearly as strong as they are and I'm not questioning *that*
not really all those other guys you mentioned simply have very good memories and play off of memorization. It was much different for bobby fischer and josh.. and you can see it in their playing style. open you mind dude.
Are you suggesting that Bobby Fischer and this Waitzkin kid didn't have expansive repertoires of openings many plies deep? You'll have to forgive my dubiousness, dude.
not at all they do have memorized probably everything. especially bobby fisher but didnt play off of memorization. the used it to make something new. listen to how they both speak aobut interview even bobby fischer said chess is dead now becuase player play off of nothing but memorization.
Buy the game "Chessmaster" (10th or Grandmaster Edition). he has recorded annotations for some interesting games of his, that you can see in the game.
You train with him, whitebelt? Why don't you have the courage to post your name, then? After all, it's easy to say that about JW whom we all know. No one knows you yet you disparage anonymously. Therefore, it's easy to discern that it is you who are the fake.
Don't waste our time with that which you don't understand.
Yeah, and even though I don't know JW personally, he scores major points, because I saw him in videos with Rza @ Hip Hop Chess conferences. That's mad cool.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
I train with this guy in New york bjj he should run for office he totally fake. He acts respectful in the clip but he is rude and and has a huge ego.He never trains with the class he has his own click he may know many submissions takedowns etc and be good on the ground but he will never understand martial arts because its about being humble 85% of the class hates him if you dont belive come down to nybjj on 36 street and see for your selfpeople like this gives martial arts a bad name
he won competitions in Tai Chi, not in brazilian jiu-jitsu - there's hardly two more different martial arts :) (I do not comment on his attitude since I don't know him)
I wonder why these assholes gave you 6 thumbs down. I'd hazard that none of them actually know the guy. So, they have no facts upon which to dispute what you said. They're just pathetic sycophantic fanbois.
Its possible that he could have made Grandmaster although it wouldve required a lot of money and travel. The obstacle that most of us untitled players face is that there are very few Fide tournaments held in the USA and the few that are Fide rated you must do very very well in against very strong players(mainly GMs) Most GMs are from foreign countries which hold Fide rated tourneys all the time, so strong players there have a better shot at getting GM norms than US players do.
By that logic, you two scrubs would be USCF champions. Moreover, there are many GMs living right here in the United States. And, FIDE awards the GM title to people who compose and solve genius level chess problems.
watching him and hearing him speak...it's captivating and (objectively) sexy. Intelligent people are very sexy in my opinion. I'm going to go check that book out.
this is true i started reading the book yesterday and didn't get any sleep i couldn't stop reading, i agree with his beliefs and realized where i'd fallen short . I'm almost finished but i highly recommend it.
Knowing that your possibilities in life are in your own hands, that your abilities are not a fixed entity, and that you can achieve wonderful things if you commit yourself to the learning process, is a truly liberating and life-affirming feeling.
Well said master, you know, what really means the learning process, of human kind, and by the way thanks for teaching me to love chess.. in your chessmater academy.
Compared to the very best in the world. But he is a master who is almost rated 2500, that is a weak chess player? I am willing to bet that he is a lot better than you could ever be, unless there is a grandmaster behind your moniker.
Not even compared to a grandmaster... the only reason he's not a grandmaster is because he quit. In terms of potential he could have easily been one of the best in the world. Plus he has beaten many grandmasters in matches. It's only a title.. after all they are all human, no matter how good they are.
Probably the best chess trainer ...a really creative guy who's ideas in chess and in life made me see things defferently...tai chi...who cares about it josh please come back to the real struggle...off course i mean chess.-
It's too bad you can't look beyond the world of chess.. tai chi, chess, life, it's all connected as josh is trying to illustrate. You should be more open to new ideas.
Well maybe ure right.we should never be one demensioned characters but this guy loved chess so much and suddenly he lost the love thats weird.I hope he'll be back.i agree that tai chi chess, life may be connected but i think we should always develop our natural talents. Its good trying to be more than good in one subject but if u have to deal with tai chi, chess, philosophy then u cant be too good in all of them
haha... "if u have to deal with tai chi, chess, philosophy then u cant be too good in all of them"
I think that just comes back to my original point... you actually become better at everything once you realize it's all connected. You should read Josh's book... maybe it'll make more sense to you then.
each one in his section.this isn't a completely accurate translation of platon's ideas...due to the fact that english language is too poor in front of ancient greek one.but if u think its all conected wow boy that's crazyness..science,art,sports it is simply imposible to become more than good in all of them.chess combines these three elements but in a small scale for each one of them.
There may be a connection, but it is obviously vague and probably metaphisical. And by metaphisical I mean EXTREMELY vague and purely symbolic. I bet Josh could beat the shit out of Socrates in a fight, making the fact that Socrates was a great philosopher irrelevant. The connection is not strong enough.
hmmn, this book sounds interesting. chess=tai-chi=learning...

I am having difficulty understanding that...just an observation.
intuitive1987 1 year ago
@gadmc2 You are undistinguished , but Waitzkin is an international master in chess , the best junior player in the history of North America , and he is a Tai Chi master as well . He would also kick your ass after embarassing you by pointing out your lack of intellect .

Why is he lying about Jeff? Even in his book he is perpetuating the lie that he won the first Nationals and Jeff lost....the truth is they both won. So why the lie? What do you think?
dacianr 2 years ago
I haven't read his book but i am a fan of him as a chess player....i have absolutely no interest in martial arts but chess is probably my number 1 personal interest. I bought Chessmaster 10th Edition ages ago and since i went through his academy section on it ive been a fan of him. He just blew me away with his knowledge on everything. he's just a natural talent at all phases of the game. i can somewhat relate to him because ive been playing chess since i was exactly six yrs old as well.
BeauG1990 2 years ago
@BeauG1990 I also came to know about him through his chessmaster course. I only started playing recently and his course was quite delightful for a novice. Though Searching for bobby fischer made me sick to the stomach, and his new book didn't help either.

has anyone read this book? Is it any good?
Mario009c 2 years ago
I am currently at the third part of the book. I got to admit, it is very inspiring, instructive, and candid; particularly it is a semi autobiography of a champion who is able to know at each stage of the learning curve, how he moved up and to recover from success and failure. To me success and failure are the two most recurring themes in our life.
kaiwei1983 2 years ago
While it may not be the authoritative book on learning, or on life, but it gave me a lot of answers because I know that although my life is very different from his, I am handling the same issues that he is and I now can access the same tools that he has - that of a champion.

Whi did he gave up on chess he could of become strong GM.??
Playncooler 2 years ago
he'll return to chess in a few years and be stronger than ever. trust me.
seansurfgood 2 years ago
I think he plateaued around 2300 to 2400. Many players hit a wall at that level and never make it higher. Josh is a wonderful chess writer and teacher for intermediate players but he may not have what it takes to go beyond 2400. A strong international GM reaches 2600 to 2700. It seems the strongest contender in the US right now is Haikura Nakamura. Waitzkin has been out of competitive chess for too long. It would take too long to get where he was, and he may not get there.
pfctsqr 2 years ago
You seem wised up about chess. I'd like to pose a question: I attained a rating of 2070 on the PS2 game, 'Chessmaster' (that has tutorials by Josh).
Is this an accurate program, or is my rating accurate based upon a computer program?
PS. i played that game recently and my rating dropped down to 1700! - havent played seriously in years.
neil73 2 years ago
The self rating algorithms tend to be a bit generous. Its usually much harder to get a high rating in over the board play. But if you remember you are playing to have fun and learn, you will have a positive experience regardless of your rating.
pfctsqr 2 years ago
Thanks for getting back to me.
I thought it may have been on the generous side, because back in theday, i went into my hometown centre, where they have large chessboards set up for anyone to play. At the time i had (i thought) a rating of around 1850, however in that first 'real' game i was royally thrashed by this old polish dude!lol!

Everincon 2 years ago 2
i would categorize josh as intelligent,
better at physics than at chemistry
inclined mathematically and scientifically more towards the engineering side than the medical side and obviously well spoken because he just revealed it,
personality: full of himself, rightfully so, attempting to assert control by the language he uses, were all sinners on a minor level , remember that :)
pAbedaNSK 2 years ago

Why strive for less than you are?

what? fischer is the best he would 'smash' anyone, but waitzkin is a brilliant player as well and is certainly not a clown..
seansurfgood 3 years ago
ya im sure hes a good player, but i dont think he is even a GM, so ya know
slaviKn17 3 years ago
the fact that he never became a gm doesnt mean anything. he completely destroyed a gm at the age of 11 check out waitzkin vs. frumkin..
seansurfgood 3 years ago
what do u mean it never means anything? a GM is a GM..
slaviKn17 3 years ago
look your point is he's not good enough to be a gm and im saying he beat a gm at the age of 11 so that means he must be good enough to be a gm but just didnt have the drive to attain it.. end of discussion! :P
seansurfgood 3 years ago
mayb the gm was on coke, it seems hard to believe that a person who had a rating of 2400+ just didnt want to be a GM.. he was obviously involved in chess, my view is he wasnt good enough..
slaviKn17 3 years ago
GM is just a title, you have to make norms that only FIDE understand to achieve it. He smashed a lot of GMs even as a 11yr boy. He has the strengh but not the norms, thats it
aquelequesonha 3 years ago 2

Does anyone know where I can see one of his games in chess?
danni13371 3 years ago
Define "see."
Hoopskidoodle 3 years ago
but Magnus is a genius - not quite your average professional chess player, as you made it sound :)
vibovitold 3 years ago
Correction: as you inferred on your own. I didn't "make it sound" one way or the other. Moreover, I just picked that Magnus kid out of my ass. The comment would be just as valid if I'd mentioned any Grand Master. My point was that JW has no business being on the cover of a Chess Program. Vishy Anand, Magnus C., Kramnik, Judit Polgar etc... do.
Hoopskidoodle 3 years ago
you said "professional chess players", not every professional chess player is a grandmaster, let alone a so-called super-grandmaster, like all the players you mentioned by name. of course Waitzkin has never been nearly as strong as they are and I'm not questioning *that*
vibovitold 3 years ago
I was talking about the cover of a popular chess program. I didn't think is necessary to specifically omit mediocre professional chess players.
Hoopskidoodle 3 years ago
it, not is
Hoopskidoodle 3 years ago
not really all those other guys you mentioned simply have very good memories and play off of memorization. It was much different for bobby fischer and josh.. and you can see it in their playing style. open you mind dude.
resistance821 3 years ago
Are you suggesting that Bobby Fischer and this Waitzkin kid didn't have expansive repertoires of openings many plies deep? You'll have to forgive my dubiousness, dude.
Hoopskidoodle 3 years ago
not at all they do have memorized probably everything. especially bobby fisher but didnt play off of memorization. the used it to make something new. listen to how they both speak aobut interview even bobby fischer said chess is dead now becuase player play off of nothing but memorization.
resistance821 3 years ago
Buy the game "Chessmaster" (10th or Grandmaster Edition). he has recorded annotations for some interesting games of his, that you can see in the game.

You train with him, whitebelt? Why don't you have the courage to post your name, then? After all, it's easy to say that about JW whom we all know. No one knows you yet you disparage anonymously. Therefore, it's easy to discern that it is you who are the fake.
Don't waste our time with that which you don't understand.

Interesting you say this, but he has won so many competitions. How could you say he doesn't understand?
Your info is correct though based on location.
CatzDaLegit 3 years ago
he won competitions in Tai Chi, not in brazilian jiu-jitsu - there's hardly two more different martial arts :) (I do not comment on his attitude since I don't know him)
vibovitold 3 years ago
I wonder why these assholes gave you 6 thumbs down. I'd hazard that none of them actually know the guy. So, they have no facts upon which to dispute what you said. They're just pathetic sycophantic fanbois.
Hoopskidoodle 3 years ago
Its possible that he could have made Grandmaster although it wouldve required a lot of money and travel. The obstacle that most of us untitled players face is that there are very few Fide tournaments held in the USA and the few that are Fide rated you must do very very well in against very strong players(mainly GMs) Most GMs are from foreign countries which hold Fide rated tourneys all the time, so strong players there have a better shot at getting GM norms than US players do.
Hairynuts4u 3 years ago
Bitch, please.
By that logic, you two scrubs would be USCF champions. Moreover, there are many GMs living right here in the United States. And, FIDE awards the GM title to people who compose and solve genius level chess problems.
If you had the juice, you'd be a GM.

I think Waitzkin´s project is very beautiful.
Knowing that your possibilities in life are in your own hands, that your abilities are not a fixed entity, and that you can achieve wonderful things if you commit yourself to the learning process, is a truly liberating and life-affirming feeling.
And it´s a great book - I have it.

Compared to the very best in the world. But he is a master who is almost rated 2500, that is a weak chess player? I am willing to bet that he is a lot better than you could ever be, unless there is a grandmaster behind your moniker.
pantherhawkrolling 4 years ago 6
Not even compared to a grandmaster... the only reason he's not a grandmaster is because he quit. In terms of potential he could have easily been one of the best in the world. Plus he has beaten many grandmasters in matches. It's only a title.. after all they are all human, no matter how good they are.

Its good trying to be more than good in one subject but if u have to deal with tai chi, chess, philosophy then u cant be too good in all of them
spirosgreco 4 years ago
haha... "if u have to deal with tai chi, chess, philosophy then u cant be too good in all of them"
I think that just comes back to my original point... you actually become better at everything once you realize it's all connected. You should read Josh's book... maybe it'll make more sense to you then.
nanquan491 4 years ago
each one in his section.this isn't a completely accurate translation of platon's ideas...due to the fact that english language is too poor in front of ancient greek one.but if u think its all conected wow boy that's crazyness..science,art,sports it is simply imposible to become more than good in all of them.chess combines these three elements but in a small scale for each one of them.
spirosgreco 4 years ago
ok nevermind man.. if you don't get it that's fine.
nanquan491 4 years ago
There may be a connection, but it is obviously vague and probably metaphisical. And by metaphisical I mean EXTREMELY vague and purely symbolic. I bet Josh could beat the shit out of Socrates in a fight, making the fact that Socrates was a great philosopher irrelevant. The connection is not strong enough.
