I heard Serbian Film is on the same level as this but i refuse to see that garbage after all the revolting things i heard.

I rented the original un-cut version in the 80's'...They did show this on Ch5 but not sure when'..The only copy I have seen since are the Edited Version.Malcolm McDowell is specacular in this role'..So ie Peter O'toole...A Cracking Thriller!!
I saw the original version and the edited version. Each one was unique in that it had its own collection of amazing flaws. There was an extra 10 minutes of vulgar nudity with wrinkled old women in the sex scenes. Peter O'Toole's lines were barely audible because the wrong microphone was used. The scene of the guy being castrated was there, but the castrated guy's acting was terrible.
There's a book about the making of this movie, and it's more entertaining than the actual movie.
i love this movie. it is pretty filthy, but the acting is so godamn great (Malcolm McDowell is the best) and the sets and backdrops and costumes are grand and it's one of the most gutsy movies ever. Caligula was really that insane and sexually perverse and the movie tells it like it was, and if people can't handle it they can go to hell.
I thought the gore was good however the sex was not. The nudity I understand however the emphases they put on it throughout the I don't like. The reason I like this movie is because of how it wants to tell it how it was and in that sense I don't mind the nudity however when they just randomly cut to an extras penis it kinda ruins the art in film.
will a sanitized version of Caligula ever be made? just because the Romans had sex doesn't mean you have to depict it on screen. i don't see the need for nudity, especially in a period piece, unless the storyline requires it (ie. "Schindler's List")

not historically faithful, but Malcolm Mcdowell captures Caligula's persona perfectly. The depravity in the film, while over the top, also captures what really happened, so i feel as if even if it isn't completely accruate, its better than a whole lot of movies.
There's a good movie in Caligula, if only somebody would edit it. As it stands, it's simply sex and murder, without rhyme or rhythm. It doesn't flow. It doesn't stand as the epic poetry of lust, debauchery, power, violence and hedonism as the film deserves. You can see the good film in there, but there's a lot of junk surrounding it, and gets a bit boring at times, save McDowell chewing entire sets - that alone is worth the price of admission.

CALIGULA is both Art AND pornography.....looks and sounds incredible, great acting, production design etc....and it's jam-packed full of beheadings, tortures, disembowellings,emasculations, straight, gay, lesbian and dwarf sex(!) fucking, sucking, spunking, pissing and fisting....in other words, EXACTLY like ancient Rome! I've just watched the uncut Blu-Edition and, I have to say, watching 15 Penthouse Pets getting screwed sore - including 'money shots' - in the same film as Sir John Gielgud and Dame Helen Mirren has to count as one of the more bizarre experiences of my life.
I actually like it as a film, despite the risqué aspect and the spectacle of it. A lot of movie reviewers have blown cold on it. I think they're scared of calling it a good film because they're worried what people will think of them.

I just got a no-name DVD copy of this Caligula movie, turned out to be an NTSC Uncut version even though it had the new black OFLC R rating sticker on it. Suck it Conroy, your "you can't watch it on DVD" rhetoric is bulldust. I just proved you wrong with my ID card (I regret calling myself TeenAuthor on Youtube, I'm 20 now) and my wallet.
To think that I was able to score an uncut copy that worked in my DVD player is amazing. Came with some extras like a doco.
I absolutely love this film. I don't care what ANYONE says -- Caligula, while not flawless, is a cinematic classic. I am disappointed however that there wasn't a scene where Caligula drove spectator sections into the lion arena during an intermission because he was bored -- That was a documented account and I think it would have made a powerful scene depicting just how sinister and depraved he was.

The film was an awful movie, it just didnt work and was destined for the scrap heap. I think Guccione realized this after watching the final cut and in a last ditch attempt to salvage his investment on it spliced in the hardcore porn. @Shadecaster06 I don't which country you live in but the hardcore uncut version is available on DVD now. There seems to be various different versions of it but I rented one of the discs from the multi-disc Imperial Edition (UK) and that was 2 and half hours long and contained some pretty racy stuff. I think that's the longest cut available.

beautifully made in its decacent colours and sets, sleazy in itsup market trimings, this film is compelling, a little overblown, arty and yet plays like a soft porn/hardcore movie. a cast never to be seen again in a movie of this sensation, mcdowells last great cinema role while gielguds ever spiralling quality guest roles in trash.
the 70s made the greatest sex movies, deep throat, flesh gordon, emmanuelle, black emmanuelle and this.
I loved Caligula although it was not historically faithful in many respects. If one cut all the gratuitous Bob Guccione porn fantasies it would be a masterpiece.

@AussieRoadshow I see what you're saying, but if you took out all the Guccione stuff, you'd still have much of the sex that Tinto Brass stuck in anyway. The Guccione scenes are remarkably ugly and unsexy to me, and they have a similar effect on me as the excessive violence in The Passion.

I just got a no-name DVD copy of this Caligula movie, turned out to be an NTSC Uncut version even though it had the new black OFLC R rating sticker on it. Suck it Conroy, your "you can't watch it on DVD" rhetoric is bulldust. I just proved you wrong with my ID card (I regret calling myself TeenAuthor on Youtube, I'm 20 now) and my wallet.
To think that I was able to score an uncut copy that worked in my DVD player is amazing. Came with some extras like a doco.

I absolutely love this film. I don't care what ANYONE says -- Caligula, while not flawless, is a cinematic classic. I am disappointed however that there wasn't a scene where Caligula drove spectator sections into the lion arena during an intermission because he was bored -- That was a documented account and I think it would have made a powerful scene depicting just how sinister and depraved he was.

The film was an awful movie, it just didnt work and was destined for the scrap heap. I think Guccione realized this after watching the final cut and in a last ditch attempt to salvage his investment on it spliced in the hardcore porn. Hoping to create the same kind of buzz other hardcore films like Deep Throat had created.

@Shadecaster06 I don't which country you live in but the hardcore uncut version is available on DVD now. There seems to be various different versions of it but I rented one of the discs from the multi-disc Imperial Edition (UK) and that was 2 and half hours long and contained some pretty racy stuff. I think that's the longest cut available.

scared. and actully the graphic sex was hardcore but i think it was nesscary really. it shows how rome was out of control at this period of time. its not a great flim nor is it bad but i think its an important flim. once you see it like or not your life wont be the same! i loved it. iam glad my gf got it for me it was an unepxcted gift...thanks baby i love you : ) .......... i say see this movie it truly is a masterpice

beautifully made in its decacent colours and sets, sleazy in itsup market trimings, this film is compelling, a little overblown, arty and yet plays like a soft porn/hardcore movie. a cast never to be seen again in a movie of this sensation, mcdowells last great cinema role while gielguds ever spiralling quality guest roles in trash.
the 70s made the greatest sex movies, deep throat, flesh gordon, emmanuelle, black emmanuelle and this.

I loved Caligula although it was not historically faithful in many respects. If one cut all the gratuitous Bob Guccione porn fantasies it would be a masterpiece.

That's an interesting observation. Would you consider a film like Passion of the Christ a masterpice if it were minus all the gratuitous violence, but not necessarily historically accurate?
I found the violence in Passion offensive, and the hardcore sex in Caligula as nothing more than peculiar, but each to their own :)

@AussieRoadshow I see what you're saying, but if you took out all the Guccione stuff, you'd still have much of the sex that Tinto Brass stuck in anyway. The Guccione scenes are remarkably ugly and unsexy to me, and they have a similar effect on me as the excessive violence in The Passion.

I understand at that time, everyone lived under pagan like culture where sexual orgies was fond at that time, but the whole time i watched caligula, i was like ''Jeez........ could u put more sex scenes''. Why do people hate this film so much? I love the mixture of death and sex (call it porn if you want - this is not what I would call pornography!) It's a wildly visual film, the sets are amazing. Who cares about the inaccuracies. All other ROman epics recently are glossy and dishonest compared to this...

Malcolm McDowell is an amazing actor and this is most likely one of the best roles he has ever had, but I just think that there was too much cheap por-scenes and come on... That scene where Tiberius crush that guards penis and then split open his belly... And the scene where Caligula killed that guy and then the girls peed on him... That was perry disgusting...

This one isn't porn, it's just a mediocre controversial movie messed up by porn scenes that were randomly inserted against the director's will.
Only reason to watch it is Malcolm McDowell, but a movie doesn't become heavy because of cheap out-of-place-porn without any artistical intention.
