GN's original R-2's had 153,000 lbs. of tractive effort and they had to reduce the bore of the front cylinders to reduce slipping which resulted in a drop to 142,000 lbs. This was still 7,000 lbs. more tractive effort than the Big Boy. WP and DM&IR's Yellowstones were also more powerful than Big Boy.
