It is their fiddle player singing, but it is my friend the late Benny Simms. Benny was their fiddle player off and on for a short time in the early/mid 1950's. I knew Benny and his wife Eula in Johnson City, TN.
@opryfan101...This is the first version I heard until Flatt and Scruggs re-recorded it with Lester singing.I really like Simms the best.Heard that they were recording an album and didn't have any more material ready.Benny suggested the Salty Dog Blues and rather than write the lyrics down for Flatt he just sung it himself.heard it was one take,.Not sure if the story is true but it came from an old bandmate of mine from the Golden State Boys who knows a lot of bluegrass history.
Awesome. . I seen Earl in concert when he was in town, filling in for Brenda Lee. It was fantastic! Earl might be 80 something now, but he can still tear up that banjo!
I remember seeing them at State Fair in Batesville, Arkansas, when I was around 4 or 5 back in the '60's. I saw Minnie Pearl then too.

You do know that isn't Lester singing lead. It's Paul Warren, the fiddler. Lester couldn't remember the lyrics.
