@2arunout there are no guided tours of this mountain. there was one professional expedition for unexperianced climbers, accompanied by some of the best climbers today, and even so none was able to summit.
this mountain is a climb that even the best climbers on earth tend to avoid at least until they climbed 4-5 other 8000m peaks. also a conventional expedition to this mountain coasts well above 100 grand.
think about it, 150 sherpas carrying 25 tons of equipment for you + permits to climb it.
@2arunout denali is obviouslly a better choice than k2 but you should know that its not an easy climb either...
you have to be in top notch condition and take into account that its a 2 day climb + 2 weeks of acclimisation.
my cousin climbed on denali a few years ago and he said this climb was most dangereous he had in his life. (and he climbed on the everest with 2 of his friends without a guide and supplementery oxygen so he knows what mountaineering is all about.
@ashatbracks so basically,if you want my advice as a climber, i would recommend to climb monte rosa or dom in the alps for starters... they are relatively easy mountains to climb and will give you a great taste of both the weather you will experiance on a serious mountain and the physical condition that you will need to have.
afterwards trying to climb mont blanc and the matterhorn to really give you a taste of extream mountaineering.
then you can try to go for denali or the karakoram mountains.
@jingeshan24 Thanks, I recently took up a mountaineering course in New Zealand. I'm looking to experience more. So probably swiss alps, starting on the gentle peaks and then proceeding to Mt.Blanc.
@ashatbracks how long is the course and how do you get started? i've really taken up an interest in mountaineering, i just don't know where to start as far as preparing and getting more experienced before i even think about summitting anything.
@dondeestamarie Hi, the course I took was in New Zealand, in the south island, alpine village of Mt.Cook. The course went for a week (6 days, started on a Sunday and went till Saturday). We learnt basic rope skills, crevasse navigation, rock climbing techniques, crampon footwork, bivvying (sleeping in the open). Send me a PM for more information, I learnt a lot from this course, very fun too, but it involves a lot of climbing with load.
I'm no climber but I'm fascinated. K2 has always had a mystical quality about it. I know that Everest is a comparative joke amongst serious climbers, but is K2 really THE ultimate challenge? I've heard claims for both Nanga Pabat & Annapurna,
@bodsnvimto there is no mountain on this planet, that is tougher to climb than K2.
k2 easiest climbing rotue is one of the toughest rotues on the planet and when you put it togather with one of the most unexpected and violent weather conditions anywhere on the planet you get a recipe for a disaster.
if its not scary enough for you then here's a statistic:
out of every 3 climbers who attempted to climb this mountain 1 has died trying.
@bodsnvimto I personally never climbed above 6200m, Stok Kangri was the highest peak i ever reached, and since its almost a non-technical it was perfect, at least for me to understand what high-altitude climbing was all about. so from my experiance i can tell you that if the conditions on a 6000m peak were very very tough (about -10 degrees celcius and pretty deep snow at the summit) then on k2 they are nearlly inhuman.
you should start from shorter peaks like the alps before thinking about k2.
why are you not sitting in that tent next to you? Sure it would have provided shelter...

Hard to light a cigar under such conditions.

Has K2 aged Jake Meyer so much, so quickly?
btw- "Pretty shitty day..." Bit of an understatement, eh? Nice one!

I'm wanting do this climb, but the cost for guides, which is the wise way to climb, compared to doing it alone, is expensive( three grand or so).

@jingeshan24 Cool story bro, please continue to tell us more

@ashatbracks i'm sorry to tell you but there is not much to tell mate :D
basically, acclimisation is just the travel to the base camp and all the minor pushes towards the final camp (before the final ascent).
my cousin almost got killed because of an avalanche (something that is pretty common on denali, which makes it almost as dangereous as K2.).
he got really lucky and his team made the final push during a pretty long periud of clear weather and everything went smooth, and that's all she wrote
