@oilfield666 ford requires 5w-20. And yes oil viscosity is critical. How about a spring loaded "lock out" that allows for bottom end torque, and high end hp...
Just took one apart. Left hand chain guides are worn/broken. Had a oil temp code in it. The engine will lose oil pressure once in a while and thats when it runs like shit. Seems like the owner was running 10w40 or 20w50 in it. So oil viscosity is that critical on these engines?
Will bad phasers cause the motor to go into "limp mode" and possibly overheat? I'm getting a code p0342 (I believe?) and I think it may be the cam phasers. (its not the alternator...already replaced that, so I'm the 10% that actually blows a phaser). I have a 480whp GT with hot rod cams.
This seems like a good idea at first. Lock out the VCT via the cam phasers and prevent future phaser problems. Now, what about performance??? That variable cam feature "increases spreads the power through out the powerband". I know these engines have a long stroke with much higher torque than horse power, but how do they run with the phasers locked? What position are they locked to? High RPM HP or low end torque. This is a big move to fix a small problem.
wrong oil=wrong oil pressure=wrong cam phaser pressure=wrong timing chain tension=wrong timing=ecu self adjustments to correct the problem. then after the problem is fixed you must allow the ecu time to change its parameters to the new oil pressures and cam functions.symptons i suffered! flat spot early on pedal, backfiring, noise sometimes went away when car was warm! timing chain slack and rattled from idle to about 2000rpm when slowly accel in neutral then went away! pinging!
the cam phaser issue is related to the oil-i brought a 5.4 3valve and it ticked from day one i got really pissed at it and spent the next yr learning everything i could about this problem and heres what worked for me! i de carbed the engine and swapped oil from 10-30 wich ford uses in its services for a 0-20w fuchs full syn oil! i ran the engine flush three times then threw in some fuel sytem cleaner and octane boost... the noise slowly but surely dissapeared and i have never heard it since
@G2203V54 i dont see how ford has been using 10w30. i do see why you had so many problems. 5w20 should be printed on your oil filler cap. like any other modular engine..ANYWHERE, you cannot substitute it
@thesunfire98 lol i know wtf my oil caps say on ALL my f150s and 2 expeditions its not 10w30. thats too heavy of an oil for the clearances in the modular engines. 20 weight is required. again show me.
@thesunfire98 i know wtf they say you moron. im talking to the idiot who is claiming ford requires 10w30 to be run in these engines. fuck pay attention kid
they got phaser issues because of our VCT (variable cam timing)...at higher rpms the cams are computer adjusted for peak performance and without lockouts a piston could hit a vaulve....i put in a set of NSR cams and had a mild tick....then i put in a SPR cam in, did the whole 9, cams/phasers/springs/retainers and love it!!.....if ur gunna go cams on these cars u gotta go all out

ok, this is what I just went threw.
pass side tensioner took a crap. gasket blew out. which led to oil flowing out of the tensioner and starving the head of oil on the cam journals.
the suspected cause, wrong oil.
but, why dont FORD do a recall on the tensioners, cam phasers, and related problems?
simple fix.
install hydr tensioners, with block off plate for oil. that would direct oil pressure to the head,. the ecu can be tuned for the phaser deletes.

@oilfield666 it say right on the cap to run 5w20, you said 5w20 should be printed on the filler cap and it does say right on there, take a look buddy

That was due to the fact you put aftermarket cams in though right?

Is there any explaination about why these V8's have Cam Phaser issues?
And why they make noise?
