Your sentiments are understandable, but it's important to remember that, while Islamic authorities condemned The Satanic Verses (most notably the Ayatollah Khomeini, who issued the fatwah), such petulant vitriol was not typical within the Muslim community. Images of Muslims burning his book showed small crowds of people in Muslim communities surrounded by horrified onlookers. It's also worth mentioning that Midnight's Children won the main literary prize in Iran.

For those who've questioned whether Muslims have read the Satanic verses to know whether he should or shouldn't get the award well let me put it this way "you don't have to taste shit to know it isn't delectable". Excuse my language but I couldn't care less whether he was awarded the knighthood and I'm all for free speech but when you clearly write something that you know for a fact will cause such a reaction one should know where to draw a line. In my opinion he wanted publicity & he got it!!

Freedom of speech does not nullify laws against libel & slander. unfortunately - these laws are not enforced. Mr Rushdie has libeled & slandered the family members of Muslims. Just because someone's ancestors are deceased - doesn't mean that they can now be verbally attacked. Many people have been injured & killed because of Mr. Rushdie's lack of discipline in saying anything that comes to mind without thinking first if it is a benefit to others or a harm. He said that his interest is money.

Criticism of religion is way less offensive than ordering the death of a novelist, killing translators, and violently protesting in response to that criticism.
Also, Mr Shafiq in this interview: "They seem to be provoking a reaction from muslims", "I hope there isn't any violence", "BUT the government have be very careful", "I urge people to [...] not allow these people to provoke us into reaction".
If that isn't a 'veiled threat' then I don't much know what would qualify as one.

Your sentiments are understandable, but it's important to remember that, while Islamic authorities condemned The Satanic Verses (most notably the Ayatollah Khomeini, who issued the fatwah), such petulant vitriol was not typical within the Muslim community. Images of Muslims burning his book showed small crowds of people in Muslim communities surrounded by horrified onlookers. It's also worth mentioning that Midnight's Children won the main literary prize in Iran.

I agree, I thought that line was extremely ominous and ill-conceived. There's the implication that he might not be able to restrain his co-religionists if they are 'offended' further, and that he, of course, would not be responsible for any resulting chaos.

Mine too, and nothing mentioned of the constant suicide bombings comitted by muslims, in the name of allah. Another this morning Wed 19th June 09, 40 killed last Friday, another 11 two days ago too.

I like Mohammed Shafiq and I like the Ramadhan Fondation. These guys are really good representatives for the Muslim community in the UK. Because of these guys I`m not ignorant to Muslims now. By the way, I`m NOT a Muslim - and I also think these guys will respect that. I think the main problem has been that there hasn`t really been a good communication before the R.F. from Muslims to non Muslims (sometimes stuff seems a bit boring/old fashioned with respect) Well done to RF. This Ramadhan foundation also supports bringing Sharia Law to Britain, as CAIR does to the US. They would like to see all Westerners oppressed by the primitive and barbaric tenets of Islam. They want to see women forced to wear veils, gay people killed, religious minorities harassed and pressured to convert, etc.
Islam has no place in modern Western society.
