@millie1mel Yes, it'll help you get around by understanding directions the people may give you or to avoid misunderstandings amongst other things, but most importantly, it'll show you're atleast trying to communicate in the local language, and believe me, that's a big plus. It may sound stupid but that will gain you the simpathy of the people, thus you'll have a better experience....just my two cents..

@millie1mel If you're going to learn a new language, it's almost certain you'll learn both parts of it, oral that is, which are talking and understanding what you just said or what the people might say to you...it's just the counterpart of talking, right? So, if you couldn't understand what they said back to you be it because they spoke too fast or because they talked in dialect, you could just ask them to repeat it slowly... and if it still doesn't work, well there's always english...

the problem with learning spanish is they speak so fast and the words all roll together. Italian and French are much easier mainly because you can easily differentiate words. Speaking spanish is easy but hearing it and understanding it is seriously hard.

No, is not escencial, many US people cant manage their R's or RR's ... but .... you can speak a fair spanglish pronnouncing your Rs as in "R"iver for "Rio" or "coRRer" ... and a bit softer (as in "salaRy" when you say ... "diaRio"
