A local radio DJ played this to death at the time. He thought it was a classic. And then it disappeared without trace. I had completely forgotten it until I came across it here. It really has stood the test of time. Love the accents. Good song.
Love this song - brings back loadsa memories from i was little and growing up in the 80's. My mum is from Brum and i was convinced she knew the person talking lol x
Ofcoure I can! This song was released in the late 1970's - long before "Asian" controllers took to the job. It might interest you to know that that there have been "non-Asian" taxi controllers in Birmingham for almost a hundred years - and there still are.
In the good old days there were so many songs like this. Classic stuff. I would love to form a covers band that does this kind of stuff, like this, the "Pina Colada song" by Rupert Holmes and "Hello this is Jonie". Any takers?
I must admit I remember having about a pint of whisky and some cheese when I posted the message. ... so in the cold light of day it all seems rather strange! I live in Bristol and have mentioned it to a drummer mate. I don't think my wife would be too happy with me doing another band..although it's all food for thought. I just love cheese (and Whisky)
they are my uncles as well. . my Ma is Pauls sister and Petes sister in law. . dont know which cousin hodgepig is though. probably Jack. if it is congrats on the baby lad
Really liked Headlights and got that in the limited edition vinyl that was supposed to be luminous when played but never really worked. Anyone need Car 67 in MP3?
have not heard this song in 30 years, sounds quite fresh and not that dated, but i might be wrong. I was too cool to like this first time around, but now I am uncool and 40 something I love it. takes me straight back to my teens all the same, thanks for posting
This a great tune. First heard it as a 20 second clip on never mind the buzzcocks. I immediatly sought it out and now have a copy. it's like an early beta band (who are great as well)
Its funny how when you hear a song 30 years later it seems even better! This was a great novelty song, with a good beat and harmonies. Thanks for posting it.
I really loved this song when it came out. Best novelty record ever. I'd been looking for it for ages. Finally found it on itunes but they have cut the ending with the sax playing. Very disappointing. This is great. Thanks
1st Record I ever bought! I was only 10 I may still have it somewhere. Nostalgia can be a double edged sword but this is sweet......Thanks for uploading it!
Thanks meaty, i searched for this about a month ago & there was no sign of it so i decided to do this video (my first ever attempt & upload)then i realised that another guy had put it up 2 weeks ago. still now there is a choice.

Pete Zorn played with Richard and Danny Thompson on Jools. "Dads gonna kill me" - great song.
Paul now runs a successfull company in East London.

If the taxi rank is based in Birmingham, why isn't the controller Asian?
I bet you can't answer that question.
