this was the first bond film i ever saw and lazenby was my first impression of bond and i ahve to say im glad that it is, ohmss is exiting as fuck and lazenby wasnt bad at all as bond. it is a shame that he quit becuse i really did like him. im glad this film got a 10 its amazing
I agree that Lazenby would likely have grown in the role. But given that statement, and the lackluster theme song (the rest of the score is memorable though) I can't see a 10. Sure I know it's your favorite and as such, a 10, but to be fair it's probably an 8 for what it does well and not a true grand-slam. For comparison, I don't have a 10 for any of them and I love this series.. I am surprised it didn't do well in the theaters. I would have thought people would be curious to see "the new guy".
I agree with another comment that I'm glad to see you did give this film the credit it deserves, whatever flaws it has. Half of Bond fans think this is the best and half think it is among the worst. I can understand both points of view and both Lazenby and the fairly static middle section are (I think) the main reasons why people don't really like this film. The editing of the action scenes was deliberately fast and close as they were trying to create a new action style for a new Bond.
the only thing i didnt like about the movie was hand to hand action scenes because the camea zooms in an its a bit annying oter than hat its a solid entry to the series and is oe of the best 10/10
One of the best Bond films with teriffic action set pieces, brilliant characters and a story that is closely based on one of Fleming's best books. Having re-watched OHMSS the other day I can say Laz gives a performance thats brave, occasionally brilliant (the end scene) but ultimately a little underwelming. When he's onscreen he's usually not as commanding as the person he's sharing the scene with. He's also the ONLY Bond actor to have a portion of his dialogue dubbed.
Thanks for the informative and entertaining review. Makes me want to see the film. It has been so long, I had almost forgotten it. George was the "kind" Bond. I just wish Mrs. Bond had survived for at least one more film. Dianna and George made a good couple.
so glad that the film got a 10, i can see why at the time the film was controversial with a new bond a more emotional story etc. but the film is great one of my favourites and maybe it lazenby had stayed they could have done more films that were emotional and 'hardcore' and got his revenge on blofeld like in the novels rather than the more comedic films during the 70s and 80s. tracy was a great bond girl who could fight, drive a car, ski and have wit. telly savalas was good addition to the cast.
I never understood how critics could accuse Lazenby of imitating Connery. I never could figure out how they came to that conclusion. Whether you like Lazenby or not, it's clear that he is physically and physcollogically different to Connery as a person, actor and as a Bond performer. I would have liked to see how Lazenby would have coped as Bond if he was put into a sillier movie like Diamonds Are Forever. I think he would have grown in the role, but could he cope in a weak Bond film?
I would think that this film and the novel Casio Royale would have been the best fit for Timothy Dalton and it's a pity he was so young when OHMSS was filmed.
You summed up this movie very well in the end. The people who hate this film for the reasons you mentioned are indeed idiots. It's on of my favorites too, and Tracy is one of my favorite Bond Girls, quite possibly my most favorite ever.
@thefuckincoolone It's worth buying. Lazenby is not bad at all. Physically he's the most believable when fighting, and he does a good job. I think people have been far too critical of his job.
I can not understand why everybody tries to bundle your nice comments with any advertisement reasons of the film company. I am simply a fan of 007 movies and so I appreciate what you have to say and what your opinion is. And I agree: Lazenby got the story with Mrs. Bond - and I confess: When she gets shot I become very emotional, too. And we should not forget: Connery was similarly unconnected to acting before his 007 career.
OHMSS didn't perform too poorly at box office though. According to box office mojo, OHMSS grossed $87 million worldwide, a relatively moderate box office hit during 1969.
I love this movie!! not even gonna lie i got teary eyed at the end of the movie with how lazenby reacted to the death. this and casino royale (2006) are the 2 best bond movies ever!! because it shows bond can be broken down and he can fall in love with the right woman. even fleming himself said bond is a 3 dimensional character who can be broken down, and ohmss and cr show bond at his best!
@Airsoftcleaner I liked Lazenby, and loved OHMSS, but I think Timothy Dalton came closest to being an exact match for Bond as Fleming described him (and as he actually *drew* the character for a comic strip).
Thank you finally some one else thinks that this is one of the best bond films ever made even the book was great both had amazing plots this is my all time favorite bond. It was a great movie too since Lazenby did his own stunts the only bad part was that he broke his leg skiing one time so the film was delayed by a few months. Also I am not sure if it was the same in the movie or not but in the book it is Sir Hillary Bray.
I enjoyed this review. This is my favourite Bond film, with From Russia With Love being number 2. Many reasons have been put forth as to why Lazenby didn't continue. I suspect his huge ego is what did him in.
Lazenby really didn't miss anything by quitting the series. Most of the James Bond movies covered in his 7 movie contract , IMO, were not very good. DAF, TMWTGG, TSWLM (blasphemy! YOLT remake) and MR were not very good. Basically he only would have had a good swan song (FYEO), LALD, and OHMSS.
I am thinking about reading the novels so I was wondering what are your Top 5 favorite Bond novels. You have good taste and I agree with most of your reviews. OHMSS is also my favorite Bond movie.
@bealio721 Oops. I guess Octopussy would have been his swan song. That was another disappointing one for me so Lazenby would have really gotten a raw deal.
I wonder if the movies would have been different had Roger Moore not been in them. I know the beginning scenes of TLD were rewritten to accommodate the more serious Timothy Dalton (my favorite Bond).
@conrod15reveiw One which you may be aware of is the parody version in 1967. Then there's the one we know today with Craig. The really unknown one was a television version in america. Then they changed james bond to jimmy bond who was not english.
@conrod15reveiw Ok well, to start off the first james bond screen debute was the black and white 1954 television play. so thats number one, then number 2 is in 1967 a spoof of james bond called casino royale was made starring david niven. and last but not least the most famous 2006 daniel craig casino royale
@MaxRenn literally nobody knows what you're talking about. I'm not reading a press release, and I really have no idea what MGM has to do with anything. I suspect from your comment though, that the issue lies with your incredible stupidity, it's off the charts, son.
This movie is fantastic, and probably my second favorite in the series. George Lazenby may not have been the best Bond, or up there with the best 007 actors but he did a good enough job on this classic. Excellent.
George Lazenby should have done Diamonds as well, not Connery who looked dis-interested and way the hell out of shape, even more so than Moore on AVTAK.
best bond film of the classic era 62-89. Its just like the book, even the quotes are used from the book, making this film so good. 10/10 easily. This film was meant to be made around thunderball time, but the snow wasnt so good so the project got abandoned.
Easilythe most underrated 007 movie of all. Lazenby is not as bad as everyone thinks, and the story is really good. Admittedly if Connery had been in this it would probably have been the best Bond film of all.
Lazenby should have stuck around for one or two more films.
It's time to end this bullshit about Lazenby making the decision to quit. He was fired and the producers illegally broke the contract because it didn't make money. Dontcha know what you're supposed to say when producers do that?
@GSMovieMoments Nope, you're wrong, he didn't HAVE a contract for future movies, he was offered a seven picture deal which he turned down due to bad advice from his agent. Stop spreading lies.
@SFNDMK I have all that and it would take time to recheck it. It was not clear. He said he was fired but not supposed to say that. Anyway I was thinking of compiling that into a post, but for now I've uploaded his introduction scene.
I personally think George Lazenby should have done at least one more film, but Diamonds Are Forever hell yes. Sean Connery, a no go. He looked out of shape, majorly, even more so than Roger Moore on A View To A Kill in my opinion (which didn't really bother me).
It was #2 at US box office.......it just didnt earn as well as TB or YOLT (frankly to compare it to TB is kinda unfair as that was a financial rocket)
so what is your favourite movie? Also IMO you have mean to nice with your reviews. On the ones i've watched i've seen you give TND 9/10, GE 10/10 QOS 9/10 Licence to kill 9/10 and casino royale 10/10 QOS and TND doesn't deserve 9/10. And seriously what's wrong with TMWTGG, it's alright imo
@NecroVMX i'm not saying you're wrong, everybody is entitled to an opinion, i just think that the plot in quatamn of solace was weak, the enemy was poor, a really poor bond girl, no intentions by the enemy and no charisma or charm either. In Goldfinger you had many memorable moments including the chance in the factory, the laser scence, a brilliant enemy with charm, brilliant bond girl, clear intentions from the enemy, good sidekick connery was in his prime here as well. Then again its my view
Finally someone else out there sees the value of this film. I always get jumped for liking this film. Lazenby is not my favorite Bond, but this is my favorite Bond film. Lazenby did good, it is a good story and Rigg is just downright beautiful.
Even if Lazenby stayed as Bond after OHMSS, it's possible that the weakness of the next movie DAF probably would have made the producers think again about the Bond casting.
what's bad: Lazenby IMO looked more like a big eared boxer trying to be comfortable in a tuxedo; Diana Rigg=one of the world's best actresses, but her in a spy flick forces comparison to her Emma Peel role. The institute women are Carry On flick google-eyed comic dollies instead of sophisticated . And Telly Savalas as Blofeld is brawn instead of brain. Further the idea of Bond infiltrating Blofeld's command and not getting recognized standing 6 inches from the bad guy is hard to believe.
if you call yourself a bond fan than it's kinda impossible not to love this movie no matter how much you bitch about connery not being in it. even with his lack of acting expirence i thought Lazenby did a great job, too bad this was the only one he did.
One of the best Bond films. Lazenby did great. Sure, he had the hardest script out of all the Bond films but he gave his best performance. Unfortunately, critics destroyed him and got bad advice from those he worked with, which resulted him to quit. I guess people weren't ready for another Bond.
first hicup in series says tcm i hate kilt wouldve liked connery better and this was worse than all previous movies but better than DAF and he was better than brosnan
This is honestly one of my favorite Bond movies. This and Dalton's two movies are my personal favorites. And Dalton is my personal pick for the best Bond, since he's so much like the Bond portrayed in the novels. Dalton's looks even match the description of Bond in the novels.
Anyway, on a side note, Lazenby should have fired that agent of his. He COULD have been THE Bond if he stuck with it.
I have relatively mixed feelings about this one, although more postive than negative. I really like the direction they took by making it such a great love story.
It's too bad George was treated like the new kid in class. I thought he did a great job for his first major role. Also, his agent was a moron to tell him to walk away. It's a shame, he should have done a follow up and properly avenge Tracy's death. Diana Rigg is my favorite Bond girl, and Savalas was great as Blofeld.
@sheemobile It's just like when Pete Broadbent turned down the role of Del Boy in Only Fools and Horses because he thought the series wouldn't do well. Anyways, you'd have thought George would have been able to hire a "proper" agent. To be honest, the agents don't do that much and still get large sums of money. It's ludicrous!
@NecroVMX lol I just had a hate for the actor. Which made me hate the movie. The story was good and I would have liked it if this guy was out of the picture. But I have a hate for lazenby guys lol.
By the way. I should tell you, originally they going to release On Her Majesty's Secret Service after Goldfinger, but they needed more women for the Angels of Death so they did Thunderball instead. And again, they planned to release it after Thunderball, but they needed more Winter locations, so they did You Only Live Twice instead. After You Only Live Twice, they FINALLY made On Her Majesty's Secret Service and released it in theaters.
When I first saw On Her Majesty's Secret Service, my friend told me that it's the worst James Bond film out of all films. I used to be foolish enough to beleive him, but now I know how great On Her Majesty's Secret Service is! It had a great story, great music, and a great cast!
Whoever told me that this film is the worst, put me in the wrong direction. And I thank you NecroVMX for putting me in the right road! =)
Anybody that says this movie was the best Bond movie(best version)needs to slap there self. The plot had holes in it exp:How does Blofed and Bond not know each other? The plot was not good. Sean is the best Bond!Dr. No and Goldfinger where the best Bond movies. The start of Dr. No says it all!
The reason Bond and Blofeld act like they're meeting for the same time is because the producers actually decided to follow the book, and it was the first one in which they met. YOLT came AFTER, and Bond actually killed Blofeld in that one. I'm not about to slap myself for being a fan of the books and not beholden to licking Sean Connery's sack like so many of you so called fans.
"licking Sean Connery's sack"?WTF?!You fake for that one!Keep it real! How old are you?Did u research that one? Like i said the plot had holes.Yeah they used the version of the book. The fact is YOLT he meets him for the first time as well so they shouldn't even made OHMSS.Since you a so call Bond fan do you consider NSNA part of the Bond (movie) series?
I'm pleasantly surprised to see another Bond fan appreciate OHMSS and Lazenby, instead of the typical 'SEAN CONNERY IS DA BEST, LAZENBY SUCKS' comments.
I can understand people being uncomfortable about an unknown Aussie model/martial artist replacing Sean Connery as bond. In addition to the unprecedented story depth that involves him getting married and later suffers.
I feel every different Bond is worthy in their own right. OHMSS has great music, good action and effects for the time.
That said OHMSS is not perfect. The start fight is poorly shot IMO and the line Lazenby says afterwards is unneccesary and cheesy.
The scenes with the ditsy girls make me cringe and the film a bit too long, but I understand it's part of establishing the story.
On the positive side, the mountain top setting is very cool and it serves for multiple action sequences, it kind of reminds me of Where Eagles Dare particularly with the cable cars.
I love this movie. It has so much feeling in it. Tracy was Bonds one and only Love. She is the best Bond Girl/woman ever. Also, Blofeld is great. Irma Bunt is also cool. And of course, Lazenby isnt bad as Bond at all. I love it.
even if i hate this movie i still liked your review untill you said that people who did not like it are idiots. i just think thats rude, but thats my opinion
Tracy, then meets M and gets a two week leave instead of resigning, and then meets Draco? This was how the novel began, if I remember, and this MAY have been how the movie was originally storyboarded (it makes more sense) but
it isn't how it was finally cut. We see Bond
on assignment, we believe, WITH HIS GOLF CLUBS --- IN PORTUGAL. Later in the film, he's on leave. The editing
Can you imagine if Connery did this film? Fuck, it would've been the best ever. That being said, had Connery done it, it probably would've been a diferent film altogether. OHMSS is perfect as it is.
The only thing that I did not like in this film is how easily Bond falls for Tracy even after the way she treats him. He saves her life when she tries to commit suicide, then bails her out at the casino. She still is rude and mean to him. In my opinion, she is little more than a petulant child.
If a woman behaved that way toward me after I was nice to her, I would not give her so much as the time of day, much less fall in love with her.
Tracy is a spoiled brat without a life of her own.
bond was used to girls falling all over him with little or no effort, he enjoyed a challenge for once. and though it is explained better in the novel, draco's bribe did keep him at the least seeing her.
I like the Blofeld in this film because we actually see a more physical Blofeld i.e - Blofeld doesn't sit in his chair getting all his henchman to do the work for him. He actually gets involved in the action for example - the ski chase when Bond escapes from Piz Gloria.
Sadly underrated at the time, Lazenby played a convincing physical Bond and the film, which started slowly, soon gathered pace and had an exciting climax. Also Bond was portrayed as a bit more human and even gets married- but the assasination of Tracey gives the film a real sting in the tail that isn't avenged until 12 years later.
This time I'd like to agree the points you give OHMSS. It is a very good movie, based on the best Bondnovel and George Lazenby isn't that bad as many people think. And then something else: Diana Rigg is one of the best Bondgirls ever and more than just a beauty. Very innovative at that time.
I love Louis Armstrong's 'WHATTITW', and along with Nancy Sinatra's 'YOLT' and Shirley Bassey's 'Moonraker, and of course Gladys Knight's 'License to Kill" (Certainly the last Great Bond song)... you have ALL of my favourites!! :O)
Great review! I thought On Her Majesty's Secret Service was the worst James Bond at first, but when I grew older, I understood that it wasn't that bad of a film.
I kind of agree, man. Lazenby was dooped by a terrible film crew. The editing was awful, it was poorly publicized, and the plot was shaky with Blofeld's doomsday plan.
Jeez, people say he's the worse Bond but none of it is his fault! Had he played in Diamonds are Forever, I think the outlook on Lazenby would be much different. Much more positive. AND, it would have given a good excuse to bring back the OHMSS theme!! :D Which is the best theme of all the Bond movies.
I million dollar dowry. Savalas is decent. Rigg, apparently, was as tempermental as Lazenby on set. He was messed around with by Broccoli. Ok movie. Could have been better with a stronger script. Lazenby would have gotton better but I think that he made the right choice because imagine him in 'The man with the Golden Gun' or 'Moonraker'. 10/10 is too much. 6/10 would be closer, without it being Lazenby's fault.
Ok, I can't quite get over your pronunciation of Lazenby, but still you are largely right. It is a great film, and it definitely stands the test of time, although George L is a bit wooden at times...
It's amazing that Peter Hunt went for so many Bond cliches in the film's opening 15 mins and GL still manages to pull them off...
The skiiing scenes are amazing and brilliantly shot, Diana Rigg is so cool and the storyline almost makes sense!
Not 10 out of 10 (that's FRWL) but not far off....
this was the first bond film i ever saw and lazenby was my first impression of bond and i ahve to say im glad that it is, ohmss is exiting as fuck and lazenby wasnt bad at all as bond. it is a shame that he quit becuse i really did like him. im glad this film got a 10 its amazing

George Lazenby should have done Diamonds as well, not Connery who looked dis-interested and way the hell out of shape, even more so than Moore on AVTAK.
Wadsy591 1 year ago
best bond film of the classic era 62-89.

I dont agree with poor marketing , there were plenty of different posters styles and so forth.
If we're talkin LTK then yeah , that one WAS poorly marketed.......not to mention having to compete with Batman 89.

It's time to end this bullshit about Lazenby making the decision to quit. He was fired and the producers illegally broke the contract because it didn't make money. Dontcha know what you're supposed to say when producers do that?
GSMovieMoments 1 year ago
@GSMovieMoments Nope, you're wrong, he didn't HAVE a contract for future movies, he was offered a seven picture deal which he turned down due to bad advice from his agent. Stop spreading lies.
NecroVMX 1 year ago 5
@NecroVMX Who knows the real full story. Was he offered a deal before or after the movie? If before, then the producers withdrew it after.

@GSMovieMoments there was a documentry on the ohmss dvd where its all there

@SFNDMK I have all that and it would take time to recheck it. It was not clear. He said he was fired but not supposed to say that. Anyway I was thinking of compiling that into a post, but for now I've uploaded his introduction scene.
GSMovieMoments 1 year ago
@NecroVMX
I agree with you there.
I personally think George Lazenby should have done at least one more film, but Diamonds Are Forever hell yes. Sean Connery, a no go. He looked out of shape, majorly, even more so than Roger Moore on A View To A Kill in my opinion (which didn't really bother me).
Wadsy591 1 year ago
@Wadsy591 I think the major difference is when Roger was out of shape, he kept his shirt on, Connery was still walking around half naked.
NecroVMX 1 year ago
It was #2 at US box office.......it just didnt earn as well as TB or YOLT (frankly to compare it to TB is kinda unfair as that was a financial rocket)

Then again its my view

what's bad: Lazenby IMO looked more like a big eared boxer trying to be comfortable in a tuxedo; Diana Rigg=one of the world's best actresses, but her in a spy flick forces comparison to her Emma Peel role. The institute women are Carry On flick google-eyed comic dollies instead of sophisticated . And Telly Savalas as Blofeld is brawn instead of brain. Further the idea of Bond infiltrating Blofeld's command and not getting recognized standing 6 inches from the bad guy is hard to believe.

if you call yourself a bond fan than it's kinda impossible not to love this movie no matter how much you bitch about connery not being in it. even with his lack of acting expirence i thought Lazenby did a great job, too bad this was the only one he did.
pjdr 1 year ago
One of the best Bond films. Lazenby did great. Sure, he had the hardest script out of all the Bond films but he gave his best performance. Unfortunately, critics destroyed him and got bad advice from those he worked with, which resulted him to quit. I guess people weren't ready for another Bond.

It's too bad George was treated like the new kid in class. I thought he did a great job for his first major role. Also, his agent was a moron to tell him to walk away. It's a shame, he should have done a follow up and properly avenge Tracy's death. Diana Rigg is my favorite Bond girl, and Savalas was great as Blofeld.
sheemobile 2 years ago 15
@sheemobile It's just like when Pete Broadbent turned down the role of Del Boy in Only Fools and Horses because he thought the series wouldn't do well. Anyways, you'd have thought George would have been able to hire a "proper" agent. To be honest, the agents don't do that much and still get large sums of money. It's ludicrous!

Cster91 2 years ago
When I first saw On Her Majesty's Secret Service, my friend told me that it's the worst James Bond film out of all films. I used to be foolish enough to beleive him, but now I know how great On Her Majesty's Secret Service is! It had a great story, great music, and a great cast!

No says it all!
dopeboy2151974 2 years ago
The reason Bond and Blofeld act like they're meeting for the same time is because the producers actually decided to follow the book, and it was the first one in which they met. YOLT came AFTER, and Bond actually killed Blofeld in that one. I'm not about to slap myself for being a fan of the books and not beholden to licking Sean Connery's sack like so many of you so called fans.
NecroVMX 2 years ago
"licking Sean Connery's sack"?WTF?!You fake for that one!Keep it real! How old are you?Did u research that one? Like i said the plot had holes.Yeah they used the version of the book. The fact is YOLT he meets him for the first time as well so they shouldn't even made OHMSS.Since you a so call Bond fan do you consider NSNA part of the Bond (movie) series?
dopeboy2151974 2 years ago
I'm not answering anything until you learn the basic rules of grammar, sorry.
NecroVMX 2 years ago
I'm pleasantly surprised to see another Bond fan appreciate OHMSS and Lazenby, instead of the typical 'SEAN CONNERY IS DA BEST, LAZENBY SUCKS' comments.
I can understand people being uncomfortable about an unknown Aussie model/martial artist replacing Sean Connery as bond. In addition to the unprecedented story depth that involves him getting married and later suffers.
I feel every different Bond is worthy in their own right. OHMSS has great music, good action and effects for the time.
Damecos 2 years ago
That said OHMSS is not perfect. The start fight is poorly shot IMO and the line Lazenby says afterwards is unneccesary and cheesy.
The scenes with the ditsy girls make me cringe and the film a bit too long, but I understand it's part of establishing the story.
On the positive side, the mountain top setting is very cool and it serves for multiple action sequences, it kind of reminds me of Where Eagles Dare particularly with the cable cars.
It is a pity Lazenby did not continue.

None of the Bond films are related to each other as far as I know.

I love this movie. It has so much feeling in it. Tracy was Bonds one and only Love. She is the best Bond Girl/woman ever. Also, Blofeld is great. Irma Bunt is also cool. And of course, Lazenby isnt bad as Bond at all. I love it.

What version of this film did the reviewer
see? Bond is attacked by thugs protecting
The editing
of this film? Not the best.
hasablad69 2 years ago
Can you imagine if Connery did this film? Fuck, it would've been the best ever. That being said, had Connery done it, it probably would've been a diferent film altogether. OHMSS is perfect as it is.

Harsh calling Tracy a spoiled brat
32newspaper 2 years ago
The only thing that I did not like in this film is how easily Bond falls for Tracy even after the way she treats him. He saves her life when she tries to commit suicide, then bails her out at the casino. She still is rude and mean to him. In my opinion, she is little more than a petulant child.
If a woman behaved that way toward me after I was nice to her, I would not give her so much as the time of day, much less fall in love with her.
Tracy is a spoiled brat without a life of her own.
trwent 2 years ago
bond was used to girls falling all over him with little or no effort, he enjoyed a challenge for once. and though it is explained better in the novel, draco's bribe did keep him at the least seeing her.

This film is one of my favourite because the story was good, 007's actor was good ad it had a lot of action.

Lazenby was a fantastic bond, but in the worst-written film. the plot hardly made sense =/
Skelex20 2 years ago
I kind of agree, man. Lazenby was dooped by a terrible film crew. The editing was awful, it was poorly publicized, and the plot was shaky with Blofeld's doomsday plan.
Jeez, people say he's the worse Bond but none of it is his fault! Had he played in Diamonds are Forever, I think the outlook on Lazenby would be much different. Much more positive. AND, it would have given a good excuse to bring back the OHMSS theme!! :D Which is the best theme of all the Bond movies.

I believe that Sean Connery was also virtually unknown prior to "Dr. No". Didn't he used to do underwear ads?

Lazenby did the underwear ads actually. Connery was picked because he was seen in the movie Darby O'Gill and the Little People
