$cientology probably has more buildings then members, most of their profits most likely come from the WOGs & Dimwitted Movie Stars. But most WOGs probably only take a few thousand dollars in coarses before they realize what there learning can be read in any FREE psychology book. As far as the Movie Stars well... there movie stars there not the brightest bulbs in the pack.
What to do? I know that banning them backfires often. Ex: Jehovah's Witnesses have decades of working under ban in many countries. I believe something like targeted public education can work. Analyze why people join a specific cult, its ideologies, etc and develop an education program in response. Prevent more recruits, help those already in to think for themselves.
And encourage volunteer organizations to help members to come out, cope with the real world. What think?
Scientology and Mormonism, two cults founded on what can only be called science fiction theology, including space aliens and voyages to other worlds. I wonder what makes us so prone to this BS?
Neither look like fading away of their own accord but you never know. Religions do come and go. At the moment we just have to live with them while taking every opportunity to debunk them.
The terrorist aspect of Sc'ology does give pause for thought but it's no worse than Islam, which kills apostates, etc.
Wow. Scientology and the JWs are even more alike than I thought! The Watchtower is buying up property left and right AND when met with protests or controversy about their pedophilia and life-saving blood trans. stance, they stonewall and deny, like the Scientologists.
As far as the community goes, I think they absolutely have the right to defend themselves and to tell whatever org that sets up house to take a hike. Unfortunately, the city doesn't agree b/c the org brings in money. Sigh.
Churches should not be allowed to sell things. It changes the church into a business when they do that, imo; and as businesses, they shouldn't get tax breaks.
How do we deal with it? I say we make them pay taxes, first off. That will get their attention, for sure, but they'll keep making money. I want them to keep it religious, and stay out of politics, but there are too many ways to get around that and any wealthy concern will be welcome in politics. Then I think about getting tactical by creating crazy religions opposed to theirs, supported by lots of cash. Force the real issue to come to a logical conclusion, that of the founders of the US.
You pose excellent questions, Badger. As someone who a theist, obviously I want to be able to believe what I believe in free of persecution. In a just society that would be a given. To have a just society where everyone is free I think secularization is the only way.
In regards to a organization like Scientology, I think that transparency is a must. If they were a simple church then I wouldn’t care what their ’mysteries’ were, but they demand shitloads of money to become a member. They should either be a business or a church, not both.
Whether religious institutions should be exempt from taxes or not I suppose is another debate altogether. ;)
A great question. I think the best response in a democratic society is to increase transparency and education. But the failure of a democratic society like ours is that there are many people who don't understand the fundamental principles of democracy or simply want to destroy those principles. Those who control organizations like Scientology and fund movements like the Tea Party don't want transparency and don't want an educated public. Sadly, democracy is easily undermined.
Reminds me of some of my more troubled days when I used to pretend I didn't hear the doorbell and unplugged my phone. Sometimes I really can't comprehend how the Co$ sees itself.
What do I think.... hmm How to exist.... well we've been doing that plenty long enough... peacefully... that is harder to do. I'll think for a bit. I have a wee bit of a headache, and so I'm not sure I want to stare at the screen to much more.
Good analysis.

Great video and very good questions indeed.
It seems the religiosity levels in USA are on an ever increasing crescendo. I don't like it.

As an environmentalist I am against burning the buildings. We could just take them and use them for a homeless shelter or something. That'd be good.

The maybe don't protest because they know how full of shit they are, and how much ammo their detractors have?
Scientology is not a religion, they are a ponzi scheme with a certain tax designation.
