One four five... are primary triads... good to start with but you must get on with the secondary triads and then diatonic sevenths and lastly chromatic chords moving on the non tertian harmony....... keep practising
oh yes its a catchy tune actully i want to say thanks cos i made it up my own way with using those chords and it sounds like tht mite be different or mite be the same so yh gd!
This is a great show on our local PBS station. The station is rerunning the show in very low picture quality. I once watched this show in HDTV in another channel, those were the days. It would be nice if the producer of the show would do some post-production on the clips like displaying a sequence of red dots as the key are pressed. Perhaps use an electronic piano with a row of indicator lights to show when & when a key is played. That would help the beginners a lot.
dave have you learnt how to play piano by going through grades as in 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 or have you just learnt how to play this song by tutor cos thats bad i feel the musical fusion i get into it.
For one thing, he makes the most awkward resting positions I've ever seen, and at 50 seconds, he take an f major scale with the thumb on the f and the g.
His fingers keep collapsing too, a no no for pretty much any piano student.
I'll give him the benefit of the doubt, this type of repertoire doesn't really showcase ability or musicality.
I actually hoped you'd respond like you did so I could make this point...thanks ;-) "Correct" technique (whatever that is...) is a means to an end, not the end itself. i.e. The goal of any playing should be to sound good, not necessarily to curve your fingers well, finger one way or another, or not use your "thumb on the f and g" as you noticed. I don't deny that all of those things can help, but let's not ever get the cart before the horse and focus more on technique than the music being made.
(continuing...) I think Dave sounds great, no matter what it looks like. What his hands look like when he plays isn't important to me, what he SOUNDS like is... He is one of the best piano players I've ever known. He could play with his toes and nose and if it sounds as good as he always does I would still consider him a great pianist. The goal is making music, not necessarily using technique that previous players have deemed "right" or "wrong."
the right technique is the one that fits u most. of course, i am looking for both nice looking fingerings and comfortable for me to do and get in used with them
I like this but I can't really see which notes he is playing on the left hand chords. And they don't say which notes they are. His hands hover over a few of them.
Dear Scott, I must say that I have been playing with the guys for about 7 years and I'm the new kid on the block... I could never get that baseline left hand going.. Until this song... OMG... I was able to get it in about 15 min... and trasposed in every key... also La Bamba really help with that latin beat.... thank a lot... love it..
Scott, While I think the piano guy is a great TV program, I thought Dave came off as being a little full of himself, and slightly condescending about rock n roll.
If he wanted something a bit challenging, he could have played the guitar solo which is kind of interesting.
I bet a number of people would have enjoyed hearing that lead which is distinctly different from the louie louie solo. Which is part of what makes the songs so distinct.
WOW!! WOW!! I just discovered you tonight!! LOL!!! However, I was disappointed this one didn't have a lead sheet. (I'm what you call a technical player-I need to read sheet music. haha! My life dream is to just play by ear). Anyway, in the future could you do one for Blue by Eiffel 65. All the tutorials I found on youtube that did that song helped a little, but I think you could do WAY better. Possibly get a lead sheet for it, too? You're awesome!!
LoL. Why do you sheet music people always say you want to learn to play by ear? I am the exact opposite. I have always played by ear and now I am learning sheet music. :) Funny. I guess it takes both. I think playing by ear should come first though, especially during early years of youth. But trust me, I think everybody has an ear. I think its really all about learning the guts of music. I love this Dave guy and the way he thinks.
Yeah, I find the syncopated rhythms hard to play without seeing it on sheet music first. I guess I just need to learn to visualize the music in my mind when I hear it played.
I was thinking the same thing.... I was wondering if it was on sheet music.... I am not good with syncopated rhythms and I need songs like this to practice to get good at it...... I've become a slave to sheet music and trying to learn to play without it how I feel with feeling....
I really find amusement and happiness with the simplest things, these guys are doing a darn infomercial and Im just bobbing my head and smiling and singing! LOL
