Despite this series being one of the best comedy items ever on the BBC and the fact that this is maybe the greatest song from one of the best bands of the 80s, the absolute funniest thing in this sketch is Simon Pegg's head movements!

It's a reference to the recreational drug Dexedrine (Dexys). It's an 'upper' used by clubbers to allow them to dance all day and night (hence being 'midnight runners').

Yes - Dexy was short for Dexedrine, a drug used for narcolepsy & ADHD disorders. Forms of it are used for recreational purposes in order to stay awake for long periods & increase activity, a bit like speed, hence the midnight runners part
