  • How did you encode your movies to preserve the 30Hz motions such as armpumping and taking damage?

  • How did the high jump boots save you that much time? and does the varia suit reduce damage when using the boots or something because why else would you need it? we need explinations for those new items you picked up and the wave beam and plasmabeam please! thank you :)

  • i noticed how you place your bombs at the ideal time to destroy walls instead of getting right up to them. excellent way to shave miliseconds. also jumping the water at 10:30. I can't wait to see what you come up with next! great job

  • I fucking love you, Saturn. This was simply AMAZING. The level of optimization was just brilliant. So many of the time savers you used are things I hadn't thought of, like mock-balling through gaps while waiting for the bomb to blow up the blocks. Very very amazing run.

  • Excuse me for the stupid question, but what does TAS stand for?

  • @EmeraldLinkinWolf Tool Assisted Speedrun

  • Wow! That was an awesome speed run! I'm curious if you tested it out to see if you could have gotten 21 minutes if you had used the murder beam on mother brain. Its supposed to save around 20 in game seconds if I remember correct. Also, just out of curiosity, what is your fastest non-TAS speed run?

  • Jaw-droppingly beautiful, as to be expected from SaturnTAS. Despite the amazing route and time, I still find the most amusing parts to be how he messes around whenever getting a few seconds to mess around, waiting.

  • WOW. If this would have been in the movie theaters for $100/view, it would have been worth it. I've been speedrunning this game for a long time now, but still have not even come close to this level of Mastery. This is Yoda level.

  • @14:55 - Did he just make that whole section without ever touching the ground?!

  • Gorgeous run! When I saw you going for Ridley before Kraid and Draygon I was like O_o! Thanks so much for continually pushing SM to the limits and beyond!

  • "Escape immediately!" Is before the counter even starts fast enough? Awesome run, looks really optimal and there are some amazing tricks and shortcuts.

  • Absolutely crazy. I watch your 27min low% run and just when i think things cant get even close to that i watch you do it 5 minutes quicker. Some of the things you pulled off are absolutely rediculous man. Jesus fucking christ, this run is godly. I cant see it being pulled off faster than this.

  • 1 question: is it faster to get the plasmabeam or not??

  • why didn't u submit this to tasvideos ? Isn't it an awesome run?

  • @rd7979 - He has. It's currently being judged.

  • 30:50 is just frikkin' brilliant. That's all I can say.

  • I understand the tricks that he performed and how they work, but thanks to those who replied. I just think that skipping bosses and such is game breaking, but the tons of tricks he used to be faster isn't a big deal on the game, and there were a lot of those tricks not yet mentioned.

  • can you do a 100% tas from smi?^^

  • Can someone explain me why at 23:47 he puts a power bomb on the ground and not earlier on the air?

Ok this should make earn 1/4 second but it shocked me in a so perfect run :D

  • @26yd1 I think the limiting factor here is that he has to jump in order to build up falling speed. As long as the power bomb goes off before he lands from that jump I don't think the exact timing matters.

  • @26yd1 If he places it higher it still takes time for the explosion to get to those blocks, and I believe it was mentioned in another video that the optimal place for the powerbomb is occupied by that waver Unmorphing to kill it after placing the bomb near enough to optimal would slow his falling speed. Since those blocks must be destroyed by a bomb (and I believe the PB detonates faster) the solution is to just get there as quickly as possible and take that moment to rebuild falling speed.

  • Not sure why he doesn't speed up the motherbrain fight with the stand-up trick though. Could save more than a few seconds (maybe not enough to break into :21 on the game clock) but I could be wrong if it involves needing one more energy tank, much like the annotation below about collecting the Varia suit vs 3 more energy tanks.

  • @Ranzear You need to unequip the varia suit and have 700 to 999 energy in order to use the stand-up trick. Gathering that many energy tanks would take more time than the glitch would save (even though he would be able to skip the varia suit this way). Search for "super metroid tricks tasvideos" for more information on this and other tricks.

  • @amaureaLua Yeah, I looked into it a little better after posting and realized I just had it backwards (Varia off, not on, so need enough energy to survive). I was thinking that because he collected the Varia suit he could execute the Stand-up.

  • Great run/video keep it up, but you're splitting hairs on what's considered game breaking glitches.

You skipped the chozo boss, sped under the closing gates to get early super missiles, quickcharged shinespark (and used it to kill multiple bosses), and bypassed mother brain's defenses.

I'm curious which ones you're ignoring. Death beam and x-raying through the statue room are the only heavy hitting glitches that weren't used that I can think of.

  • @MadCatt23 Every one of those things can be done manually and legitimately. I've managed the early super missiles/reserve mockball, quickcharge in Draygon's room, and skipping motherbrain's barriers on the Wii version. There are a few implausible things performed in this video that are simply the hallmark of a good TAS run.

XRay traveling is certainly out of the question for a legitimate player though, which is why he avoids it. I like that he's using this same stance for his RBO run as well.

  • @Ranzear I don't agree that going out of bounds is somehow "illegitimate". It is just that the type of run that does that is so different from one that doesn't that it makes sense to consider them as different categories. Both are interesting and both should be TASed. Being able to perform things in real time is totally orthogonal to this (and this too has nothing to do with "legitimacy"): I have performed X-ray climbs and used the space-time beam in real time, but they're still major glitches.

  • @MadCatt23

Ranzear explained everything to you except the bomb Torizo skip:

in fact you can use pumping arm in real time and this will make you earn a few frames, so using it in frame by frame playing isn't a gamebreaking glitch but the maximum optimisation of this trick

And this optimisation allow to skip the torizo and to avoid mockballing in the early S.missile room.

If you didn't knew he use this in every "non-jumping or slopy" moment of the game to earn time.

    Hope I helped you :-)

  • @MadCatt23 Going out of bounds or overwriting unintended memory addresses is typically what counts as "heavy glitching". In the case of Super Metroid that would be X-ray climbing and the space-time beam, and some uses of the murder beam. This isn't a distinction Saturn invented - it is the one used by TASvideos too.

  • well done saturn, great video.

  • the best TAS runner overall

  • Are you still working on the reverse boss order run ? Or is someone else doing it ? :o (if it's even possible)

  • @Linkenfant Totally possible, Namespoofer has a TAS RBO run up already.

  • flawless run! Superplay XD

  • 0:22? what?

  • @shaman666 If you are referring to the title that is 22 minutes total time, in game play (not counting loading sequences), that it took for him to complete the game.

  • Saturn does it again!

  • This is the most happiness in my day, when I turn on Youtube, and see your New video! :D It's Super Metroid, as we knew it!!!

Thanks for the awesome run, and the whole new tricks! You just break the limit :D

  • Half of the video is cutscenes, room transitions, item pickups, and credits. Bravo!

  • I wonder what his unassisted speed run record is.

  • Saturn: The Master of Super Metroid, no matter how it's played, exploited, broken, etc.

  • @ElectrumZephyr

    You're right, He beat Cpadolf!

  • Exactly that...

Mother Brains beam is the reason.

  • @SaturnTAS question for you! Is there a reason to grab the varia suit after killing Kraid in this run?

  • @shalafi4 i think it's so he doesn't have to spend time collecting more energy tanks since the varia suit reduces damage taken during mother brain's fight

  • @ez2b If memory serves (I may be wrong as it's been a while)

Varia suit reduces damage to 1/2

Gravity suit reduces damage to 1/4

he already had the gravity suit soo. *puzzled*

  • @shalafi4 Gravity doesn't reduce the damage from Mother Brain's hyper beam attack. Varia does, and without it, he'd need to collect 6 energy tanks to survive the blast. Since he needs to kill Kraid anyway, grabbing Varia is the faster choice as opposed to getting an additional 3 energy tanks.

  • @Dessyreqt AAAHHHHH I see says the blind man :) Thank you all :)

  • I still need to master that whole get damaged then fly across the screen move. that's the one move that has eluded me the most. Awesome run though, there were plenty of moments where you had me going "OH GOD WHAT?"
