I think no, but it was used on old airplanes because it has the advantage to arrange more pistons in a very short engine.

For example, in one of the four engines of a B-29 there were 18 pistons arranged in two stars, with a power of 2500 hp per engine. The crankshaft of a V-18 would be too long.
