  • I knew he was going to hold up a ruler. LOL

  • Are there really Americans that cannot measure? I work in construction and I started seeing the hispanic kids get into the workforce and not be able to measure. What is the future to bring?

  • @sundogforlove … Nothing surprises me anymore when it comes to the quality of education our young people are getting today. I was in school when it started happening so I know the exact reason why. It’s something no one wants to admit in this country so it’s just going to get worst……..Donald

  • i like this guy!

  • this was actually really helpful. i just got into gardening and i actually got a school project on tomato growing so this really made things a lot easier for me. thanks

  • @KoalasWhatNot ... Glad it helped.......Donald

  • good times :D

  • Donald these tips are so useful thanks for sharing your experiences. I just got some of those plastic trays and 3 " Jiffy pots for next year. Figured before the prices go up like everything else. Happy gardening my friend . Jim

  • @medicjimr ... Hey Jim, you are going to like those Jiffy pots. Use a good commerical starter mix or make your own from compost and you'll do just fine. Don't water those seedlings too much, just keep the soil moist......Donald

  • how long does it take for tomato seeds to sprout? and is it true that you could root a sucker and and make it grow?

  • @arocha129 ...It depends on the soil temp but usually it's up in 5-7 days. You can root a sucker and also a large branch. Got to keep em well watered every day.......Donald

  • this town just aint big enough for the two of uss

  • Thank you for all your great tips!

  • @ReddNeckerson ...Glad they help......Donald

  • I like this guy.

  • lol your accent is epic :D

  • @regergekowns ...I have an accent? LOL.......Donald

  • @webcajun yea not a lot but have it a little lol

  • Great vidio

  • Thank you for the great video.

Your the kind of person I wish we lived closer to, and I met twenty years ago.

I will use the information you shared next year.

    PERFECTO.

    Thanks,

    Kevin

  • @kevingorrellsr ...Hey Kevin, You can start your seedlings with MG starter mix if you don't make your own compost. It's all about not planting too deep and keeping the soil moist. Glad you enjoyed the video........Donald

  • Indoor crawdad instructions pleeze, ooooowweeeee1 from Canada.

  • what a nice guy, great video thanks. very helpful & god bless

  • @georgesorosisgay1 ...Thanks and you're welcome......Donald

  • Dear Donald, the video lighting was very tomato friendly!!

  • @leendog7 ...LOL......Donald

  • Great videos, I definitely enjoy your stuff, keep it up and thanks again!

  • @EZCyclone ...Glad you enjoy the videos and you're welcome.......Donald

  • i hear ya! for me soil just is not consistent enough. last year idk what was going on but most of my soil garden didn't do so good but my hydroponics did awesome. no matter if it's a super hot summer with no rain my hydroponics gives me lots of yummy greens

  • you should try using a hydroponic seed starter...in 2 weeks you can have a huge plant!

  • @EEAquasource ...just old fashion I guess. lol.....Donald

  • Thank you :)

  • @onedim23 ...you're welcome......Donald

  • I have a really good green thumb, my problem is when my seeds get big enough I can't bring myself to thin them out.

btw: i liked the mini green house went out and made me one, thanks for the idea.

  • @carrottop8311987 ... That mini greenhouse works pretty well for the price. I can't afford a big one, really don't need one......Donald

  • the only thing i dont understand is thinning out the pots

it seems like the seeds are more valuable then the dirt, why not just do one seed per pot and if a pot doesnt grow you are only out one pot, rather then 2-3 seeds per pot

    doesnt seem economical

great video, just had to ask the question about thinning thats been bugging me forever

  • @dramey03 ... The first reason I plant more than one seed per pot is the germination rate is not 100%. Not all seeds will come up. The second reason is if I need 12 tomato plants to transplant by a certain date I want to be certain I’ll have at least 12 pots with healthy plants. The average home gardener is not doing all this in the best of conditions and will have losses. Most times if I need 12 I’ll start 16-18 pots just in case......Donald

  • i use worm casting to start my seeds and tissue rolls

  • @swsebrownsugar1888 ... worm castings are good for starting seeds. A 20-30% mix works out well.....Donald

  • @webcajun

yes it does, i have a little more seeds to plant then i will start on my family seeds, my bother says i should be living on a farm but living in the city is ok as long as i have an allotment to finish growing my vegetable, happy growing to yea :D :D :D

  • i use worm casting to start my seeds

  • Mr. Donald. When is the best time in the season to do start this process?

    thanks.

  • @goodoleboy17 ... 6-8 weeks before you plan on transplanting the seedlings into the garden........Donald

  • Great job ! thanks !

  • @scopulus93 ... you're welcom, glad you enjoyed......Donald

  • Do you water the pots on top at all? or just let them in water from the tray?? Thanks!

  • @Jeffrich308 ... I find bottom watering works pretty well. Don't put any more water than what they can soak up in about 30 minutes to an hour. You don't want water staying in the tray........Donald

  • Hi Donald, been watching your helpful videos for a few weeks and decided to check out your web page.

It is fantastic, I now have it listed under my FAVORITES right near the top. Keep up the great work!

  • @TheHammer266 ... Thanks, glad you enjoy and hope they are helpful........Donald

  • thanks man god bless you

  • @BigRoach1962 ... you're welcome........Donald

  • Hi Donald would it be better to add spring water or faucet water is that fine. Thanks

  • @ROCKGY1 ... When using chlorinated water let it sit for at least an hour so the chlorine will have time to evaporate. Non chlorinated water such as well water can be used right away. I wouldn’t spend money on bottled water...... Donald

  • @webcajun... Thanks Donald for the quick info, Donald have you ever try to start pine cone seeds from start, I just planted a bunch of seeds with my son under the light bulbs cfl I hear its very hard to do this it will be my first time im trying to clone from my grandmothers tree she past away 15 years ago that tree was planted when i was born 48 years ago and I would like to grow another one from that tree. thanks.

  • @ROCKGY1 ... we don't have pine trees in this part of Louisiana so I never tried that. Let me know if it works........Donald

  • @webcajun ....I sure will Donald.

  • @ROCKGY1

Hi Donald the pine tree seeds did not sprout up i'll try in the spring again but anyway thanks for a great dvd on seed starting and the free beet seeds cant wait till spring. Thanks again.

    Greg

  • faty

  • I wish i could have this amazing cups in Thailand.

Thank you for all your vids,I love all of them.

  • @charmingchiangmai ... you can start them in plastic cups as well.....Donald

  • thanks for the demonstration!

  • @DanceDishTV ... you're welcome.......Donald

  • after watching your video now i think I may have totally screwed up, lol. pretty good video.

  • @SantinoFuentes ... keep it simple and stick to the basics...... Donald

  • great videos

  • @ingesumadre ... thanks..... Donald

  • thank you danold for this nice presentation of Starting Tomato Seeds EZ - Home Vegetable Garden ,helped me alot.

  • @aqsaman ... glad you enjoyed....... Donald

  • Thanks for the info!

  • @chicagovigilante ... there are probably more ways of doing this than varieties of tomatoes...... Donald

  • Very helpful! Thanks abunch Donald! :)

  • @ColeAnthonyLA ... you're welcome buddy....... Donald

  • You are very informative and VERY entertaining. I get scared when I see you clip three young plants down to one so soon though. I usually wait until they are 1/4 of an inch thick...just to be sure they make it. I don't need a tape measure for that either. Great videos.

    Jeff

  • @lotzoso ... Hey Jeff, sounds like a good practice to follow. I usually start extras just in case........ Donald

  • I followed everything(Everything a tomato plant should have), and I keeps dying.....should i get some mulch, compost, something?

  • @MegaM7777 ... if you're doing "everything a tomato plant should have" then they shouldn't be dying on you. You'll have to give me a little more infomation. What are they planted in, are you watering and how often, are you giving them sunlight, etc........ Donald

  • @webcajun well, I think it's pollinating,I'm also leaving it in one of those cup in a container of water, giving it sunlight from a window, grown inside my house, I use Gardeners Choice(Potting Mix), I keep inside with the rest of the plants(the rest grow fine, just those two tomato plants), the soil is most of the time cold (I warm it up every once in a while), and that's about it, I guess.

  • @MegaM7777 ... don't let the pot sit in water. That's probably the reason they die on you........ Donald

  • @webcajun (I'm not trying to have along conversation)But, I barely put them in three days ago and they've been dying for a week.........

  • what do you do with the ones you snipped out?

  • @TurboGrassHopper ... throw them away......... Donald

  • Thanks for your help and advice i just started a 4x4 raised bed garden.I sure hope it turns out some good veggies.the vid was fine by the way,LOL..

  • @traptfan777 ... wish you the best of luck with the garden........ Donald

  • Thank for the help! Your videos are great!

  • @CookingGeek ... you're welcome...........Donald

  • what if I planted them a bit too early from their season? It's really hot where I live, is that okay?

  • @MegaM7777 ... there are heat tolerant tomato varieties that do pretty well. "Heat Wave" is one of them.......... Donald

  • lol i love the tape measure part and also wait too the wife is out hahahha you know youve been married along time ha maybe thats why we all like too spend alot of time out in the garden too get some space from the loving wives lol

  • @wgseagal ... that is correct....... Donald

  • The tomato seedlings for me always grow all wiry like spaghetti and fizzle out. How do I prevent this?

  • They need more sunlight......... Donald

  • thanks for the help!

  • Glad it was helpful...... Donald

  • Started my first fall garden. I was thinking of starting seeds in my window sill, for the upcoming spring. Last year I started the summer crop seedlings in Late December / early January. Which part of the year do you recommend?

  • I start my seedlings 6-8 weeks before I plan on putting them in the garden. Starting them too early can be a problem, trust me on that one....... Donald

  • I cant wait to get something growing lol. Im not sure just what that is though, our growing season here is about at an end =/ BUT Im excited about next season! =] Love your videos they are teaching me alot.

  • Starting to plant my fall garden now. Got lots of seedlings started in a compost and worm castings mix. They really seem to like it......... Donald

  • They come up so close together that it would be almost impossible to transplant without hurting the one you want to keep......... Donald

  • its called survival of the fittest, if you're one of the hardcore christians that does not believe in abortion then preach that at church, not here

  • Cool! We will use this information for next year! At least we will have the time to get it all together to get the garden in on time.

    Thank you:)

    Lisa

  • Hey Lisa ... starting your own seedlings is not only fun but can save you a ton of money. Knowing how much water to give the plants is about the hardest part.......... Donald

  • Awesome vids! Thanks for sharing

  • You're welcome...... Donald

  • I LOVE these videos! Keep up the good work. It's rainy here in metro Atlanta this weekend and these videos have been lots of help and very entertaining! LOL @ the high speed sifter!! Great idea!

  • We're also having a rainy weekend here so I guess I'll be watching them too. LOL ...... Donald

  • I started my seeds and they jumped right up, but the got tall and spindly. I still tried to harden off and plant but the died in my bed any advice would be appreiciated.

  • Tall and spindly is a sign of not enough light. If it's warm enough in your area, start them outdoors....... Donald

  • My wife and I have recently started watching your videos. We really enjoy them. Thankyou for posting.

On May 3rd we planted a bunch of seeds. Bell peppers, Tomato and broccoli ect. We put 3 seeds in each pot. well the broccoli has grown very fast. There already about 3 inches tall. well at the end of this video I notice that you cut two of your tomato plants down to one per pot. Is this what we are suppose to do with all our plants that come up? just pick the one that looks best? Tanks again!

  • Yes, thin them out to 1 per pot once you're sure you have a healthy one. Planting more than one seed increases the chance you'll get at least one to come up....... Donald

  • ROFLMAO! Very entertaining and informative video! The "speed sifter" procurement method really got me to laughing! Have you ever planted seed from hybrid tomatoes? I am trying that this year. They are growing good so far. Grown about 2 inches... I hope they produce!

  • To stay true to the variety OP seeds are the ones to save....... Donald

  • I heard that a good rule thumb is 2 - 3 times the diameter of the seed is a good planting depth.

  • Reading the packages for the small seeds they usually recommend 1/8 inch planting depth. Some will say as much as 1/4 inch. I say experiment some and see which works best....... Donald

  • I started vegetables from seed for the first time this year. I started six tomatoes, (they were about the same size as yours) but only two made it though. I guess it was still a little cool and blustery to take them outside. Oh well, I still have 20 store bought plants that seem to be doing ok! Keep up the good work Donald.

  • It's not too late to start some more...... Donald

  • Thank you! Very helpful!

  • You're welcome...... Donald

  • you're funny, that's great..."how do you know what a quarter inch is?" Do people really ask you that? A tape measure.....definetley fool proof, LMAO! I love your videos, very informative and a yankee can never get over that accent...reminds me of a Texan friend of mine......keep up the good work! My seedlings are doing great so far.

  • Yes they do...... Donald

  • smiles loved it :)

  • Thanks...... Donald

  • You are an inspiration! I have to say, a source to go to if I'm getting trouble with my vegies/plants. I really terribly wanted to grow a cherry tomato. Failed first time, but trying again. It's always summer this part of the world, but heavy rainy season just passed by. How do you know it's time to transplant a tomato plant? In fact, I transplanted 2 into a medium size (1 gallon) polybag already. growing well, almost 1 ft tall, but a bit spindly tall, but the leaves are lacking. Help?

  • Can you email a picture to me?...... Donald

  • question, do we have to get rid of the two other plants as you did with the tomatos and only have one? what happens if you leave all of them growing? thanks for the vids, rudy [-_-]

  • Yes you do have to thin them out to one per pot. If you leave all of em they will compete for moisture and nutrients, they will be overcrowded and if transplanted that way you'll probably end up with a bunch of small tomatoes on huge sickly vines. Bugs will really love those...... Donald

  • Another helpful vid, thanks Donald! =D

  • You're welcome...... Donald

  • Great job there Donald. Hope you recieve a great supply of yields and many more to go. Keep up the great work.

  • Thanks...... Donald

  • HA! Very clever power sifter there!

  • Time saver...... Donald

  • Where do you get your potting soil from? Do you just purchase it in bulk or do you create your own compost???

  • I make my own compost and mix in Miracle Grow potting soil about half and half. My next batch will have 1/3 worm castings mixed in...... Donald

  • Thanks. Trying to turn my 40 square foot backyard lawn in NJ into a vegetable garden. I've been watching your vids for info. Garden stuff is real informative but you should put up more cooking vids up too. Your pork videos were amazing for northerners like me.

  • Will try to do a few more cooking vids this year. Have to be careful not to have too many honorary Cajuns running around up north...... Donald

  • nice!!!

  • Thanks...... Donald

  • You better sneak the flour sifter outa the house! lol

  • Shifting the compost is not 100% necessary it just makes it a little easier for those having problems with planting depth. It is much quicker to use regular starter mix or potting soil. It's just some of the cheaper brands don't have enough nutrients or are so course it's almost impossible to get seeds started, especially for someone who's just starting out. Once they get the hang of it, it's not a problem...... Donald

  • thanks for posting this. Gotta get started!

  • Glad to hear you'll be out there this spring, playing in the dirt. I'll keep playing with the buttons till I get it just right. Thanks ...... Donald

  • HA! Sneak is right! I'm guessing your mother had things missing in her kitchen, too - eh? That was funny. The lighting looked fine, in fact, good. Thanks for sharing your gardening hints. It really inspires me to get out there!

  • Thank you so much for these videos, I'm starting a garden this spring and will use your advice!! You have just become one of my favorite garden guys, 2nd only to Cisco Morris up here in Seattle, WA Thanks Again!!!

  • Let us know how your're coming along with your garden. Thanks ...... Donald

  • Your videos are always helpful and I like the video quality. Nice and clear. Fell like I am there. Thanks.

  • Actually what I did was adjust the white balance and exposure on the camera. It did come out pretty good with the exception of one scene that was a little dark. I will continue playing around with those settings till I get it just right before moving on to some more buttons. One day I may even read the instructions. LOL ...... Donald

  • I hope it stops raining over here cause you just reminded me, I forgot to open some drainage for my corn...... Donald

  • the part about sneaking in the kitchen is funny hehe! thanks for the video i need to start my maters and ect. my spring garden took a hit i lost all my potatoes... did not make the row high enough and the garden flooded for a couple days...rotted. but my other stuff has come up just fine.

  • Another great helpful vid. Ilove your teaching style. What tool do you use that you talked about where you plant and don't have to bend over. I think I saw you use it when planting onions. Is it the same one? Where do you get it?

  • Same one I used for the onions. Google the Hatfield Transplanter and check out the 2.5 inch model...... Donald

  • Good Stuff W.C.! I hear that Bone Meal is also good for growin' wreckerd breakin' tomatoes.

    Take Care,

    John

P.S. I just planted some potatoes and corn over here. Hope it does well. Also, thanks for the sifter hijacking tip! I will keep you posted.....

  • Just don't get caught...... Donald

  • great video webcajun!

  • Thank you...... Donald

  • Great video!!

I LOVE the power sifter. what a great idea.

I have a question about watering. When you use this method, do you always water them from the bottom and not on the tops? And if so, how often do you water the starters?

    Thanks!

  • I almost always bottom water the seedlings, especially once that come up. How often depends on the drying conditions that day. If it is a cloudy day I may not have to water. If the drying conditions are real good I water just about every day. Too much watering is probably the biggest mistake someone can make...... Donald

  • I always get excited around this time of year. I am so looking forward to tomato season! Being a tomato snob, i only eat tomatoes in season. :) YAY! Spring!

  • I could smell the tomatoes when I was thinning them out in the video. I can't wait either...... Donald

  • Thank you so much for all your wisdom....

    God Bless...

  • Just trying to keep it as simple as it really is. Thanks...... Donald

  • Great tips...especially the one about doubling the peat pot trays. :) Thanks for another great video! I'll have to check out your forums.

  • Check it out and join us, will be glad to have you....... Donald

  • Really great vid! Thanks:)

  • You're welcome...... Donald

  • Glad to see a tomato video, keep 'em coming!

  • It's that time of the year for most folks. Spring is coming soon...... Donald

  • @ 2:50 AAAAAAAARRRRRRRRR power sifter...LOL.

thank you sir, well done. thanks for sharing very helpful

  • A woman would have never thought about adding an electric drill to her flour sifter in the kitchen. Think how many biscuits could be baked then. LOL Probably will get some hate mail from women on that one....... Donald

  • Donald I think that's the coolest thing. : )

    Love you videos!

  • Thank you...... Donald

  • No hate mail here, in fact, I'm going to give my husband the sifter and go buy myself a new one! : p You have ideas like my husband, together we have started quite the garden in our NC back yard. I will be uploading some vids soon. Thank you so much for your postings, you inspire me quite a bit, now if I could just get my husband to like okra! Take care. Noreen

  • Hey Noreen... start him out on the microwave okra I did in the video. Quick, easy and real good...... Donald

  • Donald,

I had to laugh when you said you had messed with the buttons on the camera. I have been there and done that to my wife's dismay. I personally hate reading the 3 inch manuals that come with them.

Anyway, another great video. Thanks so much for it. I am starting my seeds now in hopes of a good year of tomatoes that I can can like you showed in a previous video.

As always, please keep up the good informative work. It is inspiring to me!

  • I have a Canon GL2 and it's got plenty buttons and settings to play with. The video actually didn't come out too bad. Not sure exactly what I did. LOL Start those tomatoes, peppers, eggplant about 6-8 weeks before your last frost date and you'll be fine. Thanks...... Donald

  • very helpfull indeed

  • Thanks...... Donald

  • Great video, I know I have to thin out the seedlings, but it kills me to have to do it....LOL. I always leave 2 in the pot, just in case.....and boy do I have a lot of "just in cases"......LOL

  • I hate to cut them too but the good ones need the space and nutrients. I always plant more pots than I need to make sure I have enough. Can always replant the jiffy pots with something else so it's no waste...... Donald
