I did not know this man died. Back in '91/'92, I used to live on Lexington Ave in Brooklyn. My good friend Frank from Jamaica opened up a record store at the corner of the block (a record store similar to VP Records). Every dancehall artist must have visited that record store. Super Cat, Shabba, Patra ALL made a visited (they knew Frank from back home). My little brother used to write his own lyrics to whatever riddim was big at the time.
*Continuing from where I left off* One day, Mickey Dread came into the shop while Frankie was letting my little brother "do his thing" over the Bogle Riddim. Mickey Dread asked "Who is that?" I said, "That's my little brother, he's only 12. Don't pay him no mind." He visited Frank again one day while I was at the shop and asked me where is my little brother. I was like, "Why?" I always told my brother he didn't have any skills so I was confused why Mickey Dread was asking about him.
One day I walked in the house and there was Mickey Dread listening to my little brother. He asked my mother if he could work with my brother. My mother said sure. He came back again, told my brother to hop in his car and they sat in that car almost all night singing and writing lyrics. He promised my brother that he would make him big but he never did. That night was the last time we saw Mickey Dread. Everyday my brother would ask "Did Mickey Dread call?" We felt so bad having to tell him no.
aah lovely man - I was lucky enough to dance on stage with him when he supported the Clash in London - Electric Ballroom - Electric times - always a gentleman - even with we silly school girls - Dread's never dead - just skanked onwards...& upwards RIP xxx
R.I.P bredda Mikey Dread had a unique voice in reggae way back from the 70's. Did classic work on T.V. of Roots Reggae series in the UK and the 'Deep Roots' series of Jamaican music in the 80's. Bless
I just found out today that he died. That is so sad. I just was listening to three of his songs today on my ipod. "Break Down the Walls, Jah Jah Love and Jumping Master." These are my favorite songs from him.
Mikey Dread always at the Controls.
