The kitten didn't have "human scent" on it. The baby either died or wasn't going to survive so the mother kills it. African big cats do it too. In fact, all cats do that. If one of their babies dies, they eat it... it's kind of like pride. They don't want anything else eating their baby, so they'll do it themselves. Either that or they won't leave a decomposing corpse for other animals to find.
