Limited description of PPVI. He was out of his depth. Crushed by the response of Humanae Vitae. Is it true that he did nto even read the Novus Ordo Mass before signing it in law, and why did he approve it, when the Council had rejected Mons Bugnini's liturgical reforms in 1966? Does anyone know why PPVI approved them? I feel this Pope did a lot of damage to the faith and to future generation's understanding of the Mass. His reforms turned priests into stage performers..

nbmex is entirely right. It's up to all of us to build the church, by grace of course, and Paul VI had every possible superficial attitude of the world towards him.

I did not use to be so much affectioned to him, but I am starting to see how great he was: he suffered, with love and without discounts, and he fully lived the contradictions of his times.

Paul VI was a great Pope, he couldn't led better the church in those difficult times. Anyone in his place would have the same difficulties Pope Paul VI confronted. In the end, thanks to his work setting the bases, the "aggiornamento" ended well.

Added to this, he was a great Holly man; who although abandoned, confronted, and questioned in the most difficult times in modern history, carried his cross until the end with sanctity and dignity.

Paul VI should be canonized, he's a true saint.

Decent priest. Honest and Holy man. But unfortunately not a very strong pope. Probably there were more capable cardinals for the papacy, but he was Pope John XXIII favorite! The last years of his papacy ment total stagnation for the Church. Forgotten by many people. Mainly because of his much more appealing succesor JPII.

JP II was not Paul's successor, it was JP I. Don't get me wrong. He tried and gave his all. I think he did more good then people give him credit for. He tried to bring the Church into the moderen world. Not easy to do with a Church that is 2,000 years old. I can't wait for him, JP I, and JP II to be cannonized.

You are one of the very few people who think that he was a bigger pope as JPII. First of all, Montini had no charisma. Second he always doubted and hesitated to act. He was a weak conductor of the VII council. You can have a great orchestra, but with an incompetent conductor the music sounds false!

And the last years of his pontificate he did nothing much for the Church! But he was a very honest man who suffered because of his indeed difficult task!

Forgotten? I doubt that. He's one of the most remembered Popes, unfortunately enough. He was mainly responsible for the wreckovation of all the churches and the desecration of the Mass.

Please pray for Papa Montini. Sadly, he misread the times (largely due to the misguided influences of some of the people around him) The shining moment in his pontificate, the jewel in his crown, will always be Humanae Vitae, the beauty and truth of which the world is yet to realize.

I'm afraid he is right. And John Paul II is as much responsible for the "new christianity" as Paul VI was. The present state of the world testifies that the Church was strangled with the aggiornamento, and reduced to a handful of loyal Christians. Especially the doubtful new rite of ordination and the new Mass were major blows against the Mystical Body of Christ which now suffers the road to Calvary.

Now the Churches in Holland where you can hear a real Tridentine Mass can be counted on the fingers of one hand. Maybe two hands, but that is it.
